Rivals and Enemies

As a way for me to get the list quest, I'm doing this. I'll most likely miss some (by that I actually mean many).

Feel free to tell me more to add, or how to update the notable events sections.

List items

  • The most obvious match-up I could think of. The Joker's always been a part of Bruce's past that just keeps coming back to haunt him.

Notable events: Joker crippled Oracle and killed Jason Todd.

  • Norman Osborn (better known as the Green Goblin) is one of two enemies that have defined Spider-Man. I didn't feel the burglar was around enough to count.

Notable events: Norman killed Spider-Man's first true love, Gwen Stacy.

  • These two brothers have a very serious sibling rivalry. Loki's been out to destroy Thor from the beginning, always wanting to step out of his brother's shadow and into the spotlight.

Notable events: I don't know any life-changing ones off the top of my head. Maybe messing up Mjolnir's handle, replacing Sif's hair or turning Thor into a frog? Loki usually fails other than that though.

  • The American dream vs. Nazism personified. Cap and the Red Skull have been mortal enemies since World War II.

Notable events: The Skull cloned Captain America and now possesses his body. Creepy and a good reason to have an enemy.

  • HYDRA was founded by Baron Strucker. SHIELD's first director was Nick Fury. Similar to Captain America and Red Skull, these two have been at odds since WWII. In this case though, they have whole organizations to fight each other.

Notable events: I'm not too sure about HYDRA or SHIELD's history, but I do know that the first time we see either they trying to exterminate each other.

  • Sure, Wolverine has plenty of enemies he clashes with more often and that have done more personal harm to him, but the rivalry with Sabretooth is the most iconic.

Notable events: Most of the important stuff turned out to be figments of either's imagination, but Sabretooth is still the first that comes to mind in Wolverine's rogue gallery.

  • Although they were once the best of friends, Professor X and Magneto had a falling out when it came to their views on mutant/human relations. Professor X wanted peace, while Magneto wanted mutants at the top of the food chain.

Notable events: Magneto was the first, and most persistent, enemy of the X-Men (formed by Professor X for all of you living under a rock). Professor X once shut down Magneto's mind, essentially making him a vegetable for a while.

  • Now, this one's not actually in comics but it is related. Although I've read that neither of these companies feel they have a competition with the other, some fans think otherwise. At very least, this can fit on the list for them being rivals.

Notable events: Due to the recent success of DC's Justice League, Stan Lee was tasked with making Marvel's own super team. With the inception of the Fantastic Four, the rivalry begins.

  • I could have matched Doom with the Fantastic Four, but I felt that the reason he hates them so is because of Reed Richards. Two mental powerhouses, Dr. Doom and Mr. Fantastic have had an unfriendly rivalry since meeting in college.

Notable events: Doom blames Richards for an experiment gone wrong in college, forging the beginning of a long-standing hatred.
