Top 9 Wished-For Resurrections

Top 9, because I'm still too lazy for double digits.

I'm not someone who hates death in comics. I think comics would be poorer for never killing characters. Several of my favorite stories involved deaths that played a natural and important role. Generally if the death was good, then I don't particularly want to see a resurrection just for the sake of having the character back.

On the other hand, there are some deaths that are crap. Meaningless, shock-value deaths or characters being sacrificed on the altars of other characters. With deaths so lame, I'm more welcoming to the idea of the characters being resurrected by whatever means necessary. It would be great if the resurrections turned out to be good stories, but honestly, I would just be happy to have the weak stories of their deaths undone.

List items

  • I'm one of the unapologetic fans of the Clone Saga. It unfairly gets a lot of blame for ruining Spider-Man when really the years of stories that followed it were much worse than anything the Clone Saga did. Killing Ben Reilly was a panicked and impatient way to end the story. Ben was the victim of a bunch of writers and editors who couldn't get their acts together to tell a decent final chapter of the Clone Saga. For that, I would love to see the character get another shot at life.

  • How do you kill off the son of Abin Sur at the same time you're making Abin Sur a central figure in the Green Lantern mythos? Seriously, it's insane. There is no good reason this character should have been so short-lived. The way he was killed wasn't even relevant to him. Any Sinestro Corps soldier could have been substituted and the story would have been the same. There was no reason for Amon to be the one killed by Laira, and it was a complete waste of this character's potential.

  • The treatment of Drax in the Thanos Imperative was god awful. As if it wasn't bad enough to randomly put him back in a Starlin-esque look, he was quickly killed off in a completely pointless scene. His death really meant nothing toward the story. It was just a sloppy way of addressing what to do with Drax in a story where Thanos returns. The way Drax, one of the main breakout stars of Annihilation, was treated was nothing but pathetic, and the character deserves to be restored to the greatness Keith Giffen raised him to.

  • Angelo ESPINOSA. Killing off a character and not even getting his name right is as low as you can get. It was already bad enough to kill him off in a story in which he was barely even a background character and in a story that was not even remotely good. Nothing about the story deserves to be respected, especially not Skin's death.

  • You know she had to be on the list. Honestly, I'm not someone who is offended at all by the idea of killing off child characters. A good story is a good story, and if it leads to interesting developments, all the better. But Cry for Justice was a terrible mess of a story, and what has been done with Roy Harper since hasn't been any better. You would think Roy brutally losing an arm would be enough provocation for some extreme reactions from Ollie and Roy. But instead, DC pushed it to a ridiculous extreme by also killing Lian along with a huge chunk of Star City's population. I could empathize with Roy losing an arm, but all that as well? No, it was way too much. It also robbed Roy of being a single father, one of the things that made him a unique character. Now, Roy is some hardcore vigilante with a cyber-arm like some teenage fanboy creation. Lian's return would go a long way to putting the Arrow Family back on track.

  • What exactly was it about New Krypton that sent DC into such a mad panic to erase everything about it as quickly as possible? Greg Rucka did a lot to establish Thara Ak-Var as Flamebird with a lot of investment in Kryptonian mythology. I understand that she and Chris couldn't continue to headline Action Comics, and I can understand the new writers of the Superman franchise not having any plans to use her. But there are many, many ways to sideline a character without killing them off. Thara's death just makes it especially difficult for any future writer to use her, but I welcome the idea of one trying and resurrecting her.

  • I love me some Ed Brubaker, but Rise & Fall of the Shi'ar Empire was not his finest hour. Sacrificing Corsair on the altar of a terrible characters like Vulcan was the worst of it. And I know Havok is in desperate need of some kind of role other than Cyclops-lite, but a block of wood would make a more compelling space pirate. The Starjammers have been a mess since that story arc, and they need Corsair back.

  • The idea of Andreas von Strucker as Swordsman with his dead sister's skin wrapped on his sword hilt was a twisted and freaking brilliant idea. Yet we barely got to see much of him. There was no good reason to kill him off to show that Norman Osborn was unstable. We knew that. It was Norman Osborn. Obviously. If anything, Andreas should have become one of the Dark Avengers since he was already using an Avengers name. Andreas as Swordsman really never got the mileage he deserved, and it would be nice to have him brought back in some way.

  • No character deserved to die for the sake of that unnecessarily long mystery of the Red Hulk's identity, especially not one of the cool faces of S.H.I.E.L.D. I don't think I've ever read many stories with Clay Quartermain, but even still, it just offends me that a character like him was killed off for such a fake mystery. Red Hulk was Ross. We always figured it was Ross. The only reason we weren't sure was because of that stupid and cheap trick with the mustache. As much as I hate L.M.D.s, I would happily accept one here to undo some of the stupidity from this story.
