Battles…Are they really being judged fairly?

I’m proud to say I’m a member of Comic Vine…as both a devote fan and up and coming artist it keeps me in touch with basically everything that goes on within the comic book world and I like that. I also get to read and hear from other devoted fans from around the world and get their point of views on things whether it’s the latest edition of comics, a character, storyline, or new movie.

But with every high there’s always a low, and I find myself now choosing to speak about this partially to blow off some steam, partially to get someone else’s point of view, and partially to get some of you thinking out there.

My beef is with the battles forum.

Let me first start off by saying I love the battles forum, don’t wish or want it to ever go away, it’s great to see scenarios and people’s opinion and point of view of fights across the entire comic book spectrum that may or may never happen. I’ve made some of my own battles, and I’ve jumped into some from time to time, but I have to say a lot of what I read from other members makes my scratch my head and say, ”What the hell?”

First of all let me be honest…I HATE JUST measuring character’s possible wins or loses by feats…allow me to explain.

I believe that a character’s ability to win a fight should be measure by BOTH his feats and the current set of abilities he has or displays, not on just what he’s done in the past because sometimes that’s irrelevant. That’s my thinking; I don’t expect anyone to agree with me. But because people on here roar, “Feats!!” “Feats!!” “Feats!!” “Feats!!” I try to conform.

I don’t believe that what one does in one universe dictates what he could do against another character in another universe.   Comic books writers have a kind of biasness to their writing and they have to in order to sell comic books…9 times out of ten the hero or heroine do bigger than life feats to amaze the reader and that biasness trickles down to the reader who is a fan which is okay. The problem is when putting these feats on a scale. Example: Superman pushing planets or beating down someone as powerful as Darkseid is an impressive feat for a DC Reader, while Thanos beating the hell out of the Silver Surfer one of the most powerful individuals in the Marvel Universe and having the power to destroy a planet with his Cosmic Energy could be considered another impressive feat and so on and so forth.   The argument then starts from those who support Superman that Thanos’ feats are not in league with Superman’s...I’m not going to go and list Thanos’ exploits…I don’t know ALL of them, but the few that I have read are pretty damn impressive…besides that’s not the point of this article.

The point is that sometimes, if you’re a fan of character a form of biasness comes over you that no matter how impressive the feats of another character in other Universe it’s not going to matter to you because what your character does is bigger and badder, and that’s the problem with a lot of battles that I have seen.

Point in case, people think I pick on Superman a lot…and I have shouted and screamed from the roof tops that I am a BIG Superman fan…I’ve seen all of his movies…all   of the episodes of Smallville…all of the episodes of Lois and Clark…all of the episodes of Superboy live action show back in the 90’s (some people probably forgot one was on awhile back), all of his animated movies so far, AND my collection of memorabilia would be bigger if I didn’t want to stay married.

And I get it…the Superman lore is canon…his stories of late could be a bit better but there is disputing that he is the greatest superhero of all time. But does being the greatest mean that he wins every single battle on here? What happened to other heroes over the years whose lore has also become canon…where is their respect?

Let’s take the Hulk for instance…for those who know I am also a huge Hulk fan, and the other reason I picked him is because he seems to get the biggest amount of disrespect on here, especially for such a complex and interest character that has evolved exponentially over the years.

Many people still view him as this big, green lumbering ox of a monster with very little intelligence that comes out when ever Bruce Banner gets angry or frightened. 9 times out of 10 he’s losing a fight and I have to ask is it out of spite, or is it because no one has picked up a Hulk book as of late.

The current version of the Hulk a.k.a   the World Breaker is extremely powerful and intelligent as he’s the successful merging of the Hulk and Bruce Banner working together; he wears expanding shorts when he transforms along with a utility belt with Bannertech gear which he uses;   and the lore of him being the strongest there is along with getting stronger the madder he gets also happens to be canon within the Marvel universe and as I’ve said time and time against it increases all of his abilities not JUST strength…now is he unbeatable…no…Zeus just knocked him out in the latest issue of the Incredible Hulks, but to say that the World Breaker who is probably the only mortal to rock the jaw of the father of Hercules the king of all Greek gods is a push over to anyone who has a Superman ability set and who has fought toe to toe against Superman is plain crazy.

This is the same Hulk who fought against and defeated Sentry another character that I’ve seen get a bad rap on here…okay granted his is another Superman knock-off, but this is the same Sentry that made an ENTIRE World forget he existed even himself, who torn Ares the God of War in half killing him, who had the power to bring his dead wife back to life…pretty impressive feats that Superman has not displayed.

Maybe my problem is I’m a big fan of all the worlds…it’s not make mine Marvel or DC all the way for me…I’m trying to find a way to get some Invincible back stories because I’m getting to like the character a lot.

So when I see what I think is biasness I kind of understand it, if you’re a fan of your character you don’t believe ANYONE can beat him or her, and that’s cool. My problem is does it belong in battles…if you’re a diehard fan of Superman or Batman and you’ve NEVER picked up a Hulk or Thor book, or you just think the characters just suck is it a fair battle when you come on the forum and decide automatically that they would lose a fight? When you have no respect for the canon lore of another character is it a fair judgment?

I remember doing a battle recently with Superman versus Supreme, and a member came on and posted, “I’m going with Superman because I just HATE Supreme.” Not only did I laugh, but I’d like that member to know I have a lot of respect for him, because he was at least honest.

I think we need more honesty when it comes to battles…if I don’t know about a character even if I’m not a fan I take the time to read and do some research about that character to make a fair judgment call.   I do it because it makes the battles what they’re supposed to be, fair, decisive, and interesting.

But that’s just me and my 2 cent…what do you think Comic Vine Community? I’d like to hear your two cents.
