With the Joker it's never easy 0

Happy New Year one and all. For Christmas I reviewed my single favorite comic issue book issue in Amazing Spiderman #500, and to ring in the new year, I thought I'd review my close second, Action Comics #719. While not quite as epic of a story as it's competitor, it does go a long way to toward the development of three of DC's most iconic characters in what is a truly excellent one-shot. While cleaning her apartment one day, Lois Lane collapses and is rushed to the hospital. Apparently, A Joker ...

HOLY CRAP HE JUST TORE OUT A MAN'S HEART!!!! 0

We open with Magpie and Poison Ivy attempting to escape in the midst of the chaos caused by the prison riot. Somehow they find this creepy chamber and are attacked by the demons. Meanwhile, Jane Doe has dragged White into a cell that's usually reserved for Mr. Freeze. (As one would imagine, it's a little bit chilly in there) We learn that she wishes to leave him to die and steal his life and even has a suit of him made... creepy. Meanwhile again, we get a bit more detail regarding Doodlebug's or...

Spiderman goes back to the future? Great Scott this is Heavy! 0

As a special Christmas treat I thought I'd share with you my favorite single comic book issue of all time. Sure there are story arcs and books as a whole that I like better, but this is an issue that did everything perfectly. Ladies and Gentlemen, this is Amazing Spiderman #500. From the J. Michael Straczynski and John Romita Jr. run on the book that I have been known to praise so heavily, this masterpiece is actually the last issue in a trilogy but still stands alone very well. First a little b...

Maybe the Timeline was a little rushed 0

We start off with Batgirl in Gotham fighting this new one shot villain named Spinebender. Since this new guy is a Shapeshifter, he gets away from her with some stolen microchips from Q-core. Then we cut to Dick and Raya in bed together discussing the nature of their relationship, whether it's a permanent thing or if Dick will just leave when he solves the mystery. Barbara shows up and the awkward "New girlfriend meets the ex" moment occurs. It's brief and it's funny. After Raya leaves, Babs tell...

You Taste Like Chicken 0

We open this time with two dumbass guards not paying attention to the monitors while joking to each other like idiots. (Why is it that every single prison mall or office building in all of fiction has these two exact guards working for them?) White gets knocked out and dragged off by the disguised Jane Doe before returning to his cell. Then we get what may be the funniest bit of dialogue in this entire mini series. Dr. Arkham is laying awake in bed. The narrative captions read, and I quote: I ha...

Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall, Humpty Dumpty murdered his grandma? 0

We start off once again with White lamenting the fact that in Arkham he's just a fish when on the outside he was "The Great White Shark." We're also quickly introduced to two more new characters. Junkyard dog, an inmate whose gimmick is.. he smells bad... okay. Also Doodlebug, an urban tagger turned famous artist turned homicidal nutcase all because he followed his "muse." Alone in their cell together, Humpty tells Warren his life story. I should note that the artwork in this scene is very well ...

Stab him with a fork in the name of science. 0

We start off this time with a scene of Two-Face injuring his hand smashing Mad Hatter's mirror, a scene of Cash lamenting the loss of his hand as well as mourning the loss of Dr. Carver whom he had a thing for, and finally a flashback of Warren as a Big Shot CEO setting his assistant up as the fall guy for one of his shady dealings, thus ruining his life and eventually causing him to commit suicide. Our story resumes proper with the Asylum's administrator, Dr. Jeremiah Arkham, shredding all of t...

Don't drop the soap or the Joker will kill you 0

Since I'll be spending the holidays in my hometown and will not be able to get to the comic store as easily each week, to fill the time, I've decided to write a retrospective of one of my favorite Batman stories, Arkham Asylum: Living Hell, though "Batman" story is a bit of a misnomer, it takes place in Gotham, specifically Arkham but Batman himself and the main players of Batman's Mythos have little to do with the plot. The real main character is some Bernie Madoff stand in named Warren White, ...

And now for something completely different 1

We start where the last issue left off, with the sinister uh... guy with mustache having decapitated a little girl and using it to taunt the village the horde is about to attack. Shining Knight is pissed as all hell and looks ready to start kicking ass and chewing gum (and gum hasn't been invented yet). But just as she's about to go berserk she passes out and things get all trippy. She finds herself in this void that is described as "all of time and space" by none other than Merlin. Little trivi...

Okay Marvel, you have my attention. 1

If you've been following my reviews, you may or may not have noticed that I have yet to review something from the Marvel side of things. That's because I find Marvel's current stories so utterly convoluted (and for the most part, stupid) that I just can't follow them. However, while in the comic store today, this little number caught my eye. Though I never finished the miniseries that preceded this, (I'll get around to it eventually) I do so love the artwork of Clayton Crain and feel that drawin...

You realize you're Naked right? 1

I will freely admit that I only know two things about The Ray, Diddly and Squat. I picked this comic up after seeing a preview for it in Aquaman. Let me tell you, this book is awesome. We start with the Ray, Lucien Gates, narrating his origin story while simultaneously fighting some random jellyfish monsters. Apparently, Lucien was hit with, "an experimental thingamajig ray" and gains light based super powers. The rest of the issue deals with Ray interacting with his supporting cast, many of who...

Now this is more like it 0

Important Note: Read my review of DC vs Marvel first. This is meant to be a comparative analysis between the two stories. I feel this is how to properly do a major crossover between Marvel and DC and how it succeeds where DC vs Marvel fails. We start off with whole planets from both universes being consumed by this shadow like creature. The Grandmaster senses it's presence and intercepts it. It is revealed to be the Green Lantern villain Krona, the mad Guardian. Here's were we get our first impr...

The Sky is Bleeding 0

This is something else I've wanted to tackle for quite some time. For my next two reviews, I will be reviewing two major DC/Marvel crossover events. One done properly with good writing and addressing the ideological differences between the two universes, another is just ridiculous fan service that is very difficult to take seriously. Today we're looking at the latter, DC vs Marvel, a comic that pits several superheroes from both universes against each other. The idea was to have fans vote on who...

You are an Android, I AM A MAN!! 0

God I love DBZ, most people I know are split between loving it and hating it. I respect both opinions but personally, I love it. The most common complaint I hear about DBZ is that it's too long, and yes that tends to be true. The show, great as it was, had the problem of dragging out fight for about thirty something episodes. Those of you who have that opinion regarding the show will actually be pleasantly surprised by this movie. It's essentially 45 minutes of straight action and fighting, whic...

Let's Get Dangerous, One Last Time 0

I absolutely love Darkwing Duck and have loved it since I was a little kid watching the show. What's more, I've loved this entire series. It's been the most consistently good comic for over a year now. Sadly, it must now come to an end, but let me tell you, it goes out with a bang. Darkwing's nemesis and alternate universe doppleganger, Negaduck, has returned from his inter-dimensional banishment and is in control of the black slime that has enveloped all of Duckburg. Darkwing's lover Morgana al...

Just keeps getting better 7

Why is it that I seem to be the only one sticking up for this series. This is a great book that keeps getting better and this issue is no exception. We start off with Ollie fighting a group of muggers who seem to have been hired to lure Green Arrow into a trap. Luckily he easily overpowers them and they burst into flames due to devices attached to their face, weird. Then we see Ollie at work. A lot of people have said that they've made Ollie too much like Batman, but I don't see that. If anythin...

While you were still learning how to SPELL YOUR NAME!! 0

This is an improvement over the last issue but not much of one. The JLI gets overwhelmed by the tiny rock monsters from the previous issue and get encased in goop. Meanwhile Guy Gardener wakes up on Peraxxus's ship after having been knocked out by the Galactus wannabe. (So what, he just knocked him out and left him there?) Guy runs into him again and they fight, Peraxxus speaking in an alien language, which a green lantern ring should be able to translate but whatever. He pulls a battle field ea...

Aquaman: King of the sea, King of DC 0

Following from the previous issue Aquaman continues to fight the fish monsters and continues to be awesome. It's a pretty solid fight with a lot of gore. The creatures retreat for some reason with the implication being that they are harmed by sunlight, though that's never stated it's just my theory. Aquaman believes that some of those who were taken by these creatures are still alive and decides to go after them, but first, he takes the corpse of one of the fish creaturees to be analyzed by some...

That's a hell of a way to tell off your boss. 0

This is a solid improvement over the previous issue, and the previous issue was awesome. This comic seems to do everything right. We start off with one hell of a bang. Super Lantern Kyle is royally pissed about Ganthet's brain washing and is beating the holy hell out of the guardians for it, all while telling them off like any remotely intelligent green lantern should have YEARS ago. Meanwhile Saint walker is attacked by Arkillo and the others and after getting smacked around for a bit, Fatality...

The last stand of Jamie McCrimmon 0

I love Doctor Who. I love everything about Doctor Who. I love the old series and the new series. I love nearly everything that has ever been produced under the Doctor Who name, and this comic is no exception. The story deals with the Sixth Doctor and his companions Perri and Frobisher (a shape shifting penguin, god I love this series) arriving on a seemingly barren planet to discover a dying timelord who's last message to the doctor is "planet 14" something that the doctor remembers hearing once...

I'll Roast you in your own fat 0

I'm coming in to this series a bit late because I didn't feel like buying all three issues in one go. I picked this one up for the same reasons I picked up Frankenstein agent of S.H.A.D.E., I wanted to add a more unorthodox title to my new 52 rotation. However, unlike Frankenstein, this one is staying in my rotation. Why because it is FREAKING AMAZING!! This is a strong book that I enjoyed immensely despite not having read the first two. The story goes, Madame Xanadu sacrifices herself in order ...

Amazing action, but sadly it just isn't enough 0

This is another one I picked up after an endorsement from Linkara of Atop The Fourth Wall. I'm trying to use the new 52 to expand my horizons a bit so I thought I'd pick up a more unorthodox title seeing as how my regular titles didn't come out with any new issues this week. This book was.... interesting. Essentially we have Frankenstein, his Ex-wife, a Vampire, a Wolfman, a Mummy, and a Fish lady on a alien planet fighting giant monsters. That's basically it. I could go into detail, but really ...

I'm impressed 1

None of my regular titles had new issues this week so I decided to pick up Nightwing to give it a try as I've been wanting to add a Batman style book to my rotation. Do I regret the decision? Hell no! This book was absolutely fantastic. Truth is, I never really liked Dick Grayson as Batman. It wasn't that he wasn't good in the role, it just didn't feel right. In fact, I didn't even like Dick Grayson while he was Robin. Nightwing is who Dick was born to be. I just can't imagine him as anything el...

If only it could transform into a movie that doesn't blow ass 0

This is a review I've been wanting to write for a long time. I saw this movie this past summer with a group of friends. The last two movies I was excited for, but after Revenge of the Fallen, I knew better. I knew this movie was going to suck, but I was not prepared for this. This is easily one of the worst excuses for a movie that I have ever had the misfortune to have payed seven dollars and fifty cents to see. A better title for this film is: Shia Labeouf the Movie, and oh yeah I guess there'...

FREAKY FISH FACE!! 1

Not too shabby I must say. The same creative team that brought us the excellent Blackest Night event now takes on the task of eliminating the negative image of Aquaman. Do they accomplish this goal, hell yes, and I for one could not be happier about it. I actually disagree with a lot of those people who think Aquaman is a joke. It's like Linkara said, he's king of Atlantis meaning that he owns the entire ocean. Technically that makes him the most powerful monarch on the planet. On top of that, h...

This is what we all wish we could do to the cast of Jersey Shore. 0

Holy hell this comic is freaking badass! I'll admit that while I found the second issue enjoyable, it wasn't anything special and the only reason I picked this one up was because it promised to feature Black Canary, (a promise it failed to follow up on but we'll get to that later) But my god was I pleasantly surprised when I read this one. Green Arrow is lured into a trap by a group of super villains led by a guy named Rush who have gained celebrity status by posting their violent crimes on yout...

Why is Batman even in this? 0

If I could sum up this comic in one word, it would be: disappointing. I read the first two issues of this title after they were highly recommended by Linkara from Atop the 4th Wall (If you've never Atop the 4th Wall, I highly recommend it for any comic book fan) and enjoyed both of them greatly. There were great hero moments, I really got into the characters, particularly Booster Gold and August General in Iron, and the story seemed very promising. I genuinely thought this book had great potenti...

And yet DC still insists on giving Hal Jordan the spotlight 0

This is my first review as a member of comic vine. As a writer and a lover of comics I've decided give some of the titles in the new 52 a shot. I've decided on four specific titles that will act as my "measuring stick" if you will: Aquaman, Green Lantern: New Guardians, Justice League: International and Green Arrow. What I hope to accomplish is to give people some recommendations for the new titles and try to form my overall opinion on the relaunch as a whole. This week I've picked up JLI #3, Gr...
