People still watch Miyazaki's movies from the 80s so yes.
@Billy Batson Ignorant criticism is what's really stupid, and should be dismissed immediately if anything there's plenty to learn actually if you knew the point of Mario and gaming then you'd understand and what he's meant to not just pop culture but the gaming industry whole. It's accurate, fun, humble and what the fans wanted and the box office proved such as well. How well did The Boy and the Heron do at the box office? They always pick these obscure movies half the world doesn't even know about half the time.
They don't like things unless it serves their own agenda these days, I can assure you nobody cares about what critics think. Like I said look at RT it's self explanatory. The Boy and the Heron is a generic story at best, Mario is actually not an ad at all but a respectful, faithful movie adaptation to the game's source material. Mario don't need ads. He's Mario. Anyone somewhat familiar with pop cult would agree. As I said earlier Grace is a prime example which is why she got ripped for a reason for her ignorance as well as those who fail to grasp the point of Mario. I'm so sure the Boy and the Heron has made as much money and is as iconic as Mario...Mario is an icon, where as the Boy and the Heron isn't and will be forgotten 100 years from now unlike Mario who's legacy will live on.
Yes let's just judge the quality of art by box office. Great idea. The Boy and the Heron by the obscure Hayao Miyazaki made 167 million dollary doos.
@Billy Batson more like the critics have always liked slop or simply don't understand the concept of such movies. Grace Randolph is proof of that. The audience are the real fans, the fans that keep movies alive thus they're the only opinions that matter. Artistic merit of Mario? Have you seen it? What artistic merit do any of these movies have?
Dismissal of criticism is stupid and there is nothing not to understand from a Mario movie. The Boy and the Heron has a story to tell and themes to explore while Mario movie is an ad for the next Mario game.
@Billy Batson: Yes that's what I'm saying, the critics hated it but then the critics are often wrong half the time. That's a prime example, just compare the RT fans vs critical reception.

Ahh another year of stupid Oscars drama, trying to remember a year where these award shows didn't get political(no wonder their ratings tank yearly) and Spider-Man Across the Universe didn't win Animated movie of the year lol and the VA for Miles got butthurt over it, said he got robbed instead of congratulating The Boy and The Heron. Hey, Mario wasn't even nominated lol...talk about being robbed of being acknowledged....
I mean, they can't please everyone, but they were actually on the safe side this year for the most part. Oppy got 7 (it's a good movie but geez). Barbie got the safest award it could, Godzilla took one (in what may be the most unexpected award of the year). That's already 9 awards most people won't be complaining about.
Except for the Trump rant and the jokes about Robert Downey yeah....didn't hit at all. They don't need to get political but they don't care at this point, they're more concerned bout a message than ratings. Godzilla's was worthy of it and I'm fine with The Boy and the Heron, tbh I felt the spider-man movie was vastly overrated. Some are questionable but for that category I'd like to know why Mario and TMNT weren't even nominated....but I digress.
I was talking about the rewards themselves. Otherwise, yeah. There were politics abound with red pins, trump jokes, etc. As for Mario and TMNT, I mean, I can't say I'm surprised. They don't exactly look like the kind of stuff Oscars would be interested in.
Right right. I mean unfortunately these shows will never leave out politics or some other real world events. It's probably a check box at this point. I get that games and comics stuff generally never gets an oscar but if you're putting Spider-Man animated movie, then Mario and TMNT definitely deserved to be there as well given how they both were also received just as well when released. Not saying any of them deserved to win just get the acknowledgement. Personal preferences aside, they did do very well and box office wise Mario did better than SM and TMNT but that's another story. I'm sure another reason is it's probably the fact that the ignorant critics bashed it since they don't know much about comics(and even worse so) video game stuff.
The Mario movie was not critically well received. The Academy isn't interested in a video game ad: the movie.
