Weird comicbook questions: What does "Pre-Crisis" mean?

Hey, fellow viners. I had a somewhat weird comicbook related question.

On the battle forums and whatnot I see things like: Pre-crisis Superman vs such and such character..

I know it has something to do with DC..But sense I've always been more of a Marvel guy this kinda confuses me.

If some one would be so kind as to answer me I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks for your time.

Taking place before the DC event "Crisis on Infinite Earths".

After said event all DC continuity was wiped clean and thus anything from before it doesn't apply to the characters after it from a continuity standpoint.

And just to add on, Pre-Crisis Superman was known to be insanely powered at some points (sneezing & destroying planets, etc). The character Superboy Prime (from "earth prime") & his stronger-than-most-everyone level was sort of an homage to this.

Before DC's event Crisis on Infinite Earths.

before dc nerfed his greatness down to hell since apparently writers are sh!t at writing super powerful characters while moody characters were all the rage back then

So ''Crisis on Infinite Earths'' was DC's first reset, and then they did ''New 52''?
