I don't see why they couldn't be brought back if someone took interest and seriously thought about them and tweaked them. I mean, just look at Mr. Freeze.
The fact that he directed a twilight is enough for me to be very unhappy with this choice. As for the storyline, I think it focusing on the hand would be a good idea. Also, I think it should shy away completely from the original, and not keep any of the cast (I hate the first one, btw).
