Because the majority of the readers are kids and early teens who don't have that much knowledge about the past stories, or people who just pick them up for a quick laugh.

Steve Trevor = Archie Andrew

Vibe = Jughead Jones

Stargirl = Betty Cooper

but where does that leave Martian Manhunter, Katana, and Green Lantern (Baz)?

So Vibe is Steve Trevor's best friend, Trevor is head over heels for both Stargirl and Catwoman, Stargirl is madly in love with Trevor, and Trevor and Oliver fight over dating Catwoman? And then Hawkman is the huge stupid guy who stands in the background and beats people up over misunderstandings.
