Comics I've Read - 2013

Every comic I've read this year...including almost every one I'd ever read before this year, because I reread what I had when I decided to get back into comics.

List items

  • It lacks the heart that made me really appreciate the mini; and I prefer Finch's art. Moreover it's a bit depressing that this is a reboot -- I want to know what happens for Aphrodite after the events of Time Out of Mind. But we'll see. I'll probably try another issue or two and see how it goes.

  • It's not tough to sell me on Finch's art, and I suppose there are certain obvious reasons why one would check out this book. What ISN'T so obvious is how memorable Aphrodite is, and how -- despite how predictable it may be -- her story makes you care for her.

  • Not even going to lie. I liked this more than I expected to. That could change if it gets too preachy, but for now, it was actually pretty awesome.

  • I don't understand how Taylor does it, but he does. Has you laughing hysterically at one panel, and two pages later you are stunned into silence at the gravitas. Wow.

  • Really pulling for Illyana here. And the Cuckoos are awesome.

  • Decent issue. I felt like Bendis recycled a little bit too much dialogue from ANXM, though the crossover continuity was nice to see. Didn't predict the new recruit, though I guess I didn't really make ANY prediction. Looking forward to seeing more Cuckoos.

  • Phenomenal issue focusing on the Flash. An ideal one-shot (like issue 5, but for different reasons) for people looking to try this series out. Taylor at his best, I think.

  • Crap. Now I actually have to pay attention to this event. Not merely because it seems like a big deal, but because in a single issue Pandora became one of the most interesting characters I've ever seen. Poor girl. Looking forward to see her path to redemption -- and whether she remains defensible or not.

  • I'd say "didn't see that coming" but the telepath joke is rather lame... anyhow, Mystique + Mastermind strikes me as a very dangerous combo. Looking forward to the next UXM.

  • I think I liked this one the best of the three, though none of these issues would have been worth buying (in my opinion). Nicer art than the last two as well.

  • A quick, riveting read, in which a LOT happens. But seriously, can Taylor make WW any more loathsome than he already has?

  • Some meh stuff, some very cool stuff. The action in the tunnel was pretty cool...getting a little tired of the exposition intrusion, however.

  • Not one of the best issues, but probably one of the more important ones in terms of things brought out in the open. Alfred's line is one of the best in the entire series.

  • Marginally better than the Drax issue, but still -- I'm not half as excited about these as Marvel evidently hopes people will be.

  • As I said elsewhere, had I paid for this, I would have wished I hadn't paid for this.

  • This was not nearly as good as the Arsenal issue which preceded it. In fact, though I didn't get the sense while reading that it was terrible, I can't think of anything particularly good to say about it. Not worth picking up.

  • This book has its moments. Sam behaves precisely as you'd expect a kid who wakes up in a hospital to a green sword-wielding woman and a talking raccoon (what, he is!). This is still so much exposition, and little of it makes a ton of sense, but I suppose in a way that's what a book for new readers is meant to do? Still not positive on this book.

  • Check for a review on this one...it's Lobdell's last issue on the series, and it ends on a good note for transferring to not only a new era for Lobdell, but for Jason, Bruce, and the book as a whole. It's not as good as the last issue, but it works as a denouement.

  • Marvel FIRST acquisition, grabbed on a whim, but a pleasant surprise when someone posted the Kitty ripping Emma's heart out panel and I discovered I could in fact read that in context because I'd already downloaded the issue. Brutal series of events in both main stories but hey, it's a fun exercise. And Campbell's cover is AWESOME.

  • I keep waiting for Injustice to disappoint. Looks like the wait continues. The confrontation between Bruce and Clark was exactly what you'd want it to be.

  • Marvel FIRST acquisition. Interestingly enough, the only stories I really cared much for were the Nova and Young Avengers tie-in...and I liked the latter more than the former, despite having rejected YA and put Nova on my pull list. Hm...

  • Marvel FIRST acquisition. I...it did nothing for me.

  • Marvel FIRST acquisition. Liked it. Would consider buying more. Quite different from the usual superhero fare, given the Norse roots.

  • Marvel FIRST acquisition. I was confused and overwhelmed. Neither is something you want to say about the first issue of a book.

  • I really loved this issue. Some people are going to be upset because they don't like Harper and they don't want to see anyone infringing on Damian's turf. But I've liked her since the beginning and I LOVED the focus on her. I also really loved the portrayal of Batman, his attempts to process the death...I just really enjoyed it. Art occasionally lacking, but otherwise, a great issue.

  • I LOVED this issue. Everything about it. And I'm glad to see Eva getting some spotlight; she stands to become one of my favorites (if the powers that be let her, you know, LIVE).

  • Marvel FIRST acquisition. I liked it. It's a fun dynamic. If Slott did indeed drop the EXTRAORDINARILY creepy Otto/MJ stuff, I might even be able to swing this somewhere down the line. On the other hand, I hate Marvel for destroying the Pete/MJ relationship, and if this nails that coffin, I'd regret having supported it...

  • Happy International Women's Day, I suppose. Bought this on sale. Read it. Formed no particular opinion; definitely very different from the other DC stuff I've read. Not in a way that made me care though.

  • Marvel FIRST acquisition, bro. Dude, bro, this is like, seriously, pretty great.

  • Marvel FIRST acquisition. I've enjoyed Hickman's writing in the past, and this is no different. I had minimal FF exposure via Liu's X-23 run, and while I'm not really interested, I appreciate why this side of the Marvel Universe appeals to folks.

  • Marvel FIRST acquisition. Brow-raising, but mostly just confusing. I just read two books in which Captain America is NOT trapped in another dimension. I do not understand how he is ALSO here at the same time.

  • Marvel FIRST acquisition. Maybe it's Remender, or the fact that this was mostly mutants rather than the typical Avengers crowd, but I found this vastly more interesting than Avengers #1. Though...I hate seeing characters impaled in the first issue. I'm assuming that wasn't a death though. Consider this book on my radar.

  • Marvel FIRST acquisition. A decent opener, I suppose, though as one who never really cared about this team, I didn't really see that changing after one issue. Does help clarify a tiny bit the other issue of this that I've read, though.

  • Marvel FIRST acquisition. I really liked this. In fact, the only real reason I'm not immediately going to run to pick more up (aside from not having the money to do so) is that I've heard some of these mutants have already been killed. And I don't think I can handle that.

  • Marvel FIRST acquisition. Legion's really ripe for an awesome story. His situation is extremely unique. But I honestly just wasn't hooked at all.

  • Marvel FIRST acquisition. As expected, a beautifully-drawn, decently written book which I'd follow if the concept weren't so obscenely deplorable to me. Glad to finally have a a glimpse at Hopeless & Rosemann's letters section; it merely confirmed my assumptions.

  • I'm not positive whether what WW says to Ares is in-keeping with her female independence side (someone maybe can clarify that), but overall this was a nice shift, with some great moments, and we're back on-track with this great series.

  • Marvel FIRST acquisition. Intriguing, I suppose, though nothing blew me away. Interesting seeing a little more about Dazzler (I know almost nothing of her).

  • Marvel FIRST acquisition. Didn't love, didn't hate.

  • One of my "FIRST" acquisitions. Seems like reading this alongside UXM would be a good idea, should I have the money.

  • I love this SO much. I hate that this is the end for now, despite the "continued in..." that comes on the final page. PLEASE go buy this. I want to see more of it. It's just so fun!

  • I'll reiterate the one thing I dislike about this book: that it's going to be over soon. Things happen so quickly; but I like the things themselves.

  • Somewhat of a letdown; seemed rushed, and some of the art was less than stellar. Probably the weakest issue thus far, at least for me.

  • Probably the weakest of books I read this week, though still okay. Art was great. But I find the whole hating one parent, losing another thing rather trite, doubly so upon hearing this is a "new" origin story. It lacked a proper emotional punch and the ending seemed rushed. Hesitant about how this series will progress.

  • Emma's costume really doesn't make sense. But whatever. I am really enjoying this. I actually groaned at the last page because I really want to know what happens next. And I like the new kids, especially Eva. Tats and time control, you know?

  • A fun follow-up to the previous issue. All the characters seem to have gotten equal page time this time around, so while there are still plenty of questions at least we're slowly moving towards answers. Definitely laughed out loud a couple times here.

  • I'm not sure why I decided to give it a go. I said bad things about Bachalo's art. I take them all back. This book is different. This book is fun.

  • Many people recommended this to me. So I finally bought it, expecting...well, not a lot, frankly. And I was absolutely blown away. Given my...views...I did not expect to be SO empathetic to this character. I'd made a lot of unfair assumptions about why people liked Batwoman. And now I understand. She's powerful, she's inspiring, and she's REAL. This book packs a powerful emotional punch. It makes you think about real world implications. And it does all that with extremely tight writing and GORGEOUS artwork. Buy this. Don't even think twice about it.

  • Things get decidedly more interesting, and we are reminded that Superman is also Clark Kent. Not my favorite issue yet, but a strong one, especially plot-wise.

  • Certain things I wanted to see in the aftermath of DotF did. Frankly, I don't know how people can see Dick and NOT believe Joker accomplished anything. And I'd forgotten just how gruesome Raya's death was. *shudder* Decent issue.

  • Remender doesn't miss a beat, coming off the tail of Kyle/Yost's run (which was my first Marvel series since reading Ultimate Spider-Man as a kid). I'm hard-pressed to find a thing about this book that I didn't like, aside from wishing it were longer (that is, that there were more to the TPB). I now understand why folks recommend this run. Looking forward to reading more.

  • This was an impulse buy...hot green aliens & talking raccoons, you know? Anyhow, I enjoyed it. Laughed a couple times. Thought it was paced quite well. I might actually follow this one.

  • An enjoyable spotlight moment for Roy, almost bereft of distraction, which showcases his humor in all its self-deprecating glory. My number one question is when, exactly, this story takes place -- Roy's remarks about his friends seem a little less genuine than I'd expect -- but overall it's a fun issue.

  • This was definitely one of the best issues in Lobdell's run. Fun and lighthearted, but with gravitas, and an ending that makes the complaining about how "DotF accomplished nothing" seem even more hollow.

  • As my first introduction to most of these characters, I am definitely looking forward to seeing how this book goes. Absolutely hate Waller -- between this and Suicide Squad, she's the sort of character I want to shoot. People as replaceable, expendable pawns -- will always bother me. Hopefully that doesn't play too big a role later in the series, or I'll be ANGRY.

  • Not particularly impressed. The story was rather predictable, no real tension. The art was generally good, but had definite flaws.

  • Highlight of the three books.

  • After last issue's charming diversion, we see something happen which, frankly, should have been seen in a comic a long time ago. Ish just got real.

  • I'm quite a huge fan of Simone's handling of Barbara and so Fawkes was probably already fighting an uphill battle here. Between the failure to shed any more light on James Jr. and some ridiculous moments near the end, this one already has me looking forward to Gail's return.

  • Still mulling over this one. It's either genius or massive letdown, and I honestly don't know which. Will update with a review whenever I finally figure that question out.

Holy huge!

Really happy you read Jubilee's latest with Wolverine (mini) -- I appreciate you were able to enjoy the character without having to know what got her to be a vampire -- we reminds me, it's yet another story-line I need to re-read to refresh my mind on what's happening with the fire-work tossing mutant.

I have a lot to choose from here by the way.

@lykopis: Yeah, this list is getting obnoxiously long. On the one hand it's impressive, on the other hand I'm not sure I want to deal with the load time every time I go to edit (since I need to send from the bottom up with each new issue). I have no clue why it doesn't paginate. It definitely should.

I figure it's been a while since Logan & Jubes...we'll see pretty quickly how she is in Wood's book, right?

(and don't panic, I've only read 16 things since we talked about keeping each other reading. Could be worse :P)
