Comics I've Read - 2013

Every comic I've read this year...including almost every one I'd ever read before this year, because I reread what I had when I decided to get back into comics.

List items

  • Well THAT happened.

  • This may be the single worst story I have ever read in comics. I know there are others which are worse, but to kill two long-standing characters in a special miniseries (and to have one never really come back, the other not come back for two years) is obscenely disrespectful. Given my rants over the previous six months against Marvel, this puts things in perspective a bit: there truly is nothing new under the sun when it comes to cruel and blatant flipping off of niche fans of younger characters. Good grief. Never read this.

  • The story that started off badly got worse. The sense of discomfort became one of dread and culminated in something truly sickening, the sort of thing I can imagine any long-term reader of the series would have absolutely flipped out over. Reading about Lilith Clay after the fact, I find that things simply went from bad to worse, and when she was finally given a new lease on life in the New 52 they made her an evil torturer of her former friends. Serious WTF vibes from this, and of course, it wasn't even the end.

  • As the story began, I noticed two things: 1, that I wasn't much enjoying this story, and 2, that despite the name's suggestion of something to be celebrated, this was decidedly dark and foreboding.

  • Gorgeous artwork, high-quality paper. And that's about it. I found the story tremendously dull and slightly fetishistic.

  • I think BKV's run will remain the standard -- folks say it, and I imagine there's a reason for that. But Whedon's Volume 2 finale is still solid, and introduces some very interesting new development along with some really great moments. This remains one of the most consistently awesome series I've ever read.

  • This is probably my favorite volume thus far (#7 of 11, so only a few to go to change that). And that's saying something since a previous volume featured Cloak & Dagger. But yeah... I'll be returning to this one for scans and quotes. It's glorious.

  • I guess this sort of overlaps with the next Runaways trade (Live Fast), but I figured it'd be easier to just read it straight through than try to alternate with that. It's rather a standalone story anyway -- and it made me appreciate the YA more than previously, for sure.

  • In the wake of Nico's terrible death this week, I finally finished another volume of Runaways...and encountered a far more meaningful death. This ended so sadly, but at the same time it was beautiful and consistent.

  • I didn't think it was possible to be so sure of a book as to add it to my pull list on the basis of a single issue, but Snyder & Murphy just proved it is.

  • Read this back in January, re-read it again to refresh myself for reading the first arc. Previously was the 54th book I'd read this year.

  • It's not so much what happens in this issue as how it happens that I really like. The framing is great, and the concept -- Billy Batson and Shazam's perspective on what's happening -- is neat. Good issue.

  • It's a short event that features a book I've thought about trying to get into for a while. I imagine Captain Marvel (and maybe Avengers Assemble)' success will hinge on this event and its immediate following. I enjoyed this well enough, though the confidence and awesomeness of Carol in the first issue seems to have been lost since her series began.

  • Read through in one hospital waiting room sitting. Finished the first arc and then stopped; partly because the sale was over, and partly because the arc was over, and partly because the ending left me uncertain whether I wanted to continue into the next year.

  • Comixology was having a sale. The art grabbed my attention and Sam Humphries' name didn't hurt either. I enjoyed it in a way...though I'm not sure whether I appreciated how self-aware it is or was annoyed by it. But a year's worth for ten bucks says "I don't really care."

  • Like the outfit she wears, the exterior Emma Frost is a show, a distraction from the very hurt, but very strong woman within. For a long time I've had friends tell me that I wasn't getting the depth of Frost from Bendis' handling of her -- that to truly appreciate her, I needed to go back to her roots. And so I did with this volume, and I was blown away. This is such a compelling and well-told story that I can't really think of a good reason not to read it. Incredible.

  • So I found myself with time to kill today, and downloaded the first issue of this mini as I'd previously gotten it for free from Marvel 700. I...really enjoyed it. Enough that I bought the other three issues on the spot and happily followed through. I know so little of Jubilee beyond her role in Liu's X-23 run, and seeing more of a focus on her was nice. This was also my introduction to Rockslide, who was adorable. All in all, nothing groundbreaking in this book, but I certainly felt like it was worth picking up.

  • I picked this issue up because I found the preview amusing. Nelson -- the new writer for Supergirl as of this issue -- did NOT disappoint. I laughed out loud several times and came to understand a lot about what makes this book's world tick, which isn't an easy task for any book's 20th issue. I speak of potentially dropping RHatO down the line; I'll speak now of potentially adding Supergirl.

  • After the previous issue's shocking twist (which wouldn't have been AS shocking had Batman & Red Hood come out first), I was actually pretty angry at Tynion. This issue restored some of my faith, but not enough for me to be positive whether this will still be on my pull list in a few months. Jason needs to be brought back, along with the fun that made this series so unlike the rest of the Batbooks.

  • Alright, Simone. You regained my trust. A(n almost shockingly) mature direction with a very sinister feel and a few panels which -- as Babs point out -- are nightmare material. VERY solid issue -- and a good place to jump on, I'd say, for non-readers.

  • I know it's an elseworlds tale, but I find it exceedingly odd that this was a far more politically blatant comic than The Movement earlier this month. Between the hardline liberal agenda and my ignorance of the import of the big "reveal" at the end, this issue did little for me.

  • I enjoyed the main feature well enough, which surprised me a bit because of how much more I enjoyed it than the back-up, which was an excerpt of the real, mainline Damsels book. Hrm.

  • My Midtown Comics FCBD order came in, so I got a chance to read this. I really don't like or care about the whole Thanos/world-ending thing. Events are ridiculously frequent in the Marvel U (yet interfere not one bit with the one book I actually WANT interrupted), and the threat is either stupid because it's real or stupid because it's not. The preview of the Avengers graphic novel at the end, however, has my interest piqued.

  • Marvel 700 acquisition. Loved it. The, er, "safe cracking" part had me actually grinning; it's like Ocean's Eleven with an accent. And more explosions. I may have just found a new member of my pull list.

  • This was honestly a bit of a letdown, because I loved it, and then I remembered that this is the old Superman, and he (and his marriage) are gone. Looking forward to Snyder & Lee's take, but man, I can't imagine how hard it was for loyal DC readers to stomach the New 52. I'm pretty sure I'd have checked out.

  • Saw this was free on Comixology so I snagged it. Didn't care much for the Batman story. Teen Titans Go! was adorable, and the inclusion of things like connect the dots and a maze (while useless on an iPad) was really cool to include for kids on FCBD.

  • There's no good reason everyone shouldn't read this. Period. Unless you hate fun.

  • With the new creative team and a lot of praise, I decided to try it out. I have no idea what the consequences of this issue are for ongoing readers. I thought it was well-written, but I'm still not sure I'm able to get onboard with the premise of Suicide Squad...I loathe Waller, and I don't understand how/why she is portrayed as in any way a "good guy." And I think the fact that someone fell in love with her sort of proves that. *shrug*

  • Zenescope's having a Robyn Hood sale this weekend and while Razz's reviews for her mini were less than enthusiastic, this book had nothing going for or against it except my appreciation for the mythos that has birthed these two characters. My first non-Neverland Zenescope story, and I liked it. It was fun, and a good introduction to how these characters/this universe functions. May pursue other stories with these two in them.

  • Wow. If I try to put more words to it, I'll cheapen the impact of the book. I understand why people praise Fables. All it took was one issue.

  • Bought sometime a year ago, not really sure why. But I enjoyed it. A bit gratuitous at times, but overall a very fun twist on the story, and a good introduction to Zenescope for me.

  • What on earth was DC thinking releasing the latest RHatO BEFORE this issue? This is so crucial to understanding that issue, it's not even funny. Wow.

  • Finally resumed reading Runaways. Because of course Avengers Arena wasn't emotional torture enough and I needed to make sure I was doubly upset when Chase and/or Nico are taken from me. On the plus side, it's still wonderful. And this volume had a bunch of Cloak & Dagger in it, which was spectacular.

  • I loved this issue. One artistic mistake really ruined a critical emotional moment for me, however :(

  • Marvel 700 acquisition. Wow. The art in this issue was incredible. But more importantly, I was immediately sold on this character. I understand why she's liked by so many, and why this book has gotten such a devoted following.

  • Marvel 700 acquisition. I was impressed by how much I enjoyed it. Decided to read it before reading the Captain Marvel series' beginning, for perspective.

  • Got from nightwingnerd, who was giving out random codes. I loathe the Superior Spider-Man thing second only to my loathing for Avengers Arena in Marvel NOW, but I love Yost. And I was not disappointed. Great humor, an awesome beatdown, and the joke about the Phoenix Force was priceless.

  • Marvel 700 acquisition. Didn't know what to expect, but this followed Necrosha (one of the few things I HAVE read) so it actually worked out well. Seeing Arcade, however, pissed me off.

  • This series got substantially better as it went along. Though the story is predominately fluff, the art and movement were definitely the best of the four.

  • I liked it. Seemed like it had potential...enough that I may look into reading more at some point. Tough with so few pages though. Love the art style, though as an Aspen book it's got that weird family-friendly cartoon vibe to its look despite the obvious emphasis on sex.

  • I'm quite glad that this is the first issue I read after whole Marvel NO fiasco. Kitty's little speech to Jean definitely struck a chord -- about finding an object worthy of taking your anger out on, rather than just being angry.

  • This was cute. Wasn't totally sold on Molly Danger as a uniquely interesting character. Princeless is a bit heavy-handed on the social commentary but I guess subtlety has never been the forte of material for youngsters.

@lykopis: Yeah, this list is getting obnoxiously long. On the one hand it's impressive, on the other hand I'm not sure I want to deal with the load time every time I go to edit (since I need to send from the bottom up with each new issue). I have no clue why it doesn't paginate. It definitely should.

I figure it's been a while since Logan & Jubes...we'll see pretty quickly how she is in Wood's book, right?

(and don't panic, I've only read 16 things since we talked about keeping each other reading. Could be worse :P)

Holy huge!

Really happy you read Jubilee's latest with Wolverine (mini) -- I appreciate you were able to enjoy the character without having to know what got her to be a vampire -- we reminds me, it's yet another story-line I need to re-read to refresh my mind on what's happening with the fire-work tossing mutant.

I have a lot to choose from here by the way.
