Happy Birthday Akira Kurosawa...

 Akira Kurosawa
 Akira Kurosawa
Today would mark the 100th Birthday of the legendary film maker Akira Kurosawa, the man in my mind is one of the greatest film makers of all time. With films the likes of Yojimbo, The Seven Samurai (later the Magnificent Seven) Tora, Tora Tora (uncredited) and many more.

Some say the man was the forerunner of truly magnificent Martial Arts films and a true story teller for the Western Genre, films like Bugs Life have taken from this man to name a few.

RIP Akira and we celebrate you still today.

It's fine, i think the celebration ended long ago.

Locking my own thread sucks but thanks to inconsiderate users, it has to be so.

Since this is a thread about Akira Kurosawa, then I suggest that everyone stays on topic.  If anyone wants to talk about anything else (whether it's cake, clapping or bizarre accusations of rewriting history) then do it in private.

You seem to have an obsession with:

1, this thread;
2, confusing Japanese for Cantonese films; and
3, cake.

How about taking up knitting or stamp collecting?  It might help you to focus on something constructive for a change.    Back on topic, Akira Kurosawa is one of my favourite film makers of all time.  Although as a director he didn't really break any major ground, he was a fantastic story-teller.  Probably why Lucas liked his work so much.  It's so easy for people to confuse a 2 second google search with reality. Ok :D

  • The forbidden kingdom was a 2008 American movie that was based off Asian films
  • There is also the American horror movie "The Ring" which was copied off the Japanese horror movie "Ring"
  • There is also Godzilla which is originally Japanese
"
I'll only reply to this because you asked, and I will try to be polite and I will end it here. This "forbidden kingdom" thing was not American, and we couldn't care less about it. "The Ring" crap was an asian reproduction of its own movie to sell to America, that we could care less about. The Godzilla remake was also an asian production that was bizarrely set in America. Stop trying to blame us for your crap.  This is it for me on this thread. For Mistress Redhead, Happy Birthday. Enjoy your cake.  "
lol it seems like you really dislike asia... i'd keep that on the down low

  • This "forbidden kingdom" thing is American, produced by Lionsgate and Weinstein, it stars michael angarano and jackie chan (you obviously don't know what it is)
  • The Ring was remade by hollywood
  • And Godzilla was produced by the Toho company in Tokyo

and happy b-day to Kurosawa

Both countries have examples of both brilliant and shotty film making.  It doesn't really make sense to boil it down to one country makes good films while the other doesn't, it's simply a false dichotomy.

There is a recent film called "Samurai Fiction" which is a light hearten comedy that pays tribute to the samurai films of that period.

btw you know they are remaking Seven Samurai with George Clooney set in modern day South East Asia?  Don't know how I feel bout that one.  They are already remaking the Last Dragon with Sam Jackson as Sho'nuff (a roll I was destined to play dammit!) and Chris Brown as Bruce Leeroy.  Seriously Hollywood leave the classics be!

Kurosawa was one of the greatest film directors of all time.  Directors such as George Lucas & Spike Lee have said that he has affected the way they think about film making.  His films often function for effective metaphors for both the inner soul of the individual and society.  He is a talent that will always be missed.  Those of you who are Japanese film buffs may like to also check out the work of Masaki Kobayashi.  He is a director from the same period as Kurosawa, and in Japan he is considered to be in the same league of directors.  Two of his films that I would recommend are "Sword Of Doom" & "Samurai Rebellion", both starring Yojimbo's Toshiro Mifune.

Wow me and Kurosawa have same Bday?!  Awesomeness!  Maybe I'll watch Ran or Seven Samurai tonight.  Don't know if I can make a drinking game out of either one though....Hmmm...Maybe every time Toshiro Mifune makes a makes one of his non verbal crazy sounds in Seven Samurai I'll drink.  Or I can drink for each bandit killed!  Nonetheless,  Kurosawa-san, Otanjou-bi Omedetou gozaimasu!

He's good stuff. and in whatever case, here he is doing the job, and credited
for it, and quite the lot of it, so theres that. If MR says its good ill support it.
Bruce Lee didnt invent martial arts, movies, nor acting either. Its still not like
he didnt do his part either for it though, nor as if he didnt broaden the view of it.
Because he certainly did that and has the credentials to prove it. Like saying
im not the best apple salesman because i didnt invent apples? hardly.
The popularity of his work and the films he worked on speaks for itself.

"Seven Samurai" was stolen from many things, including The Justice Society of America, The All-Winners Squad and Blackhawk, each which predated "Seven Samurai", when comics were intentionally and conveniently illegal in japan, as did "The Most Dangerous Game". And the japanese loved ripping off our big dinosaur and monster movies, too.

Everything, from manufacturing to comics to action movies to music. Even their "romanji" scribble was taught to them to communicate to Americans, of all things. ALL rip-offs, girl.

Name ONE thing America steals from asia, and I'll give you a free "made-in-china" knock-off iPhone, and a free "made-in-japan" home computer and electric crash-mobile, and free pirated Iron Man, Superman and Forbidden Planet DVDs, AND their free pirated "Astroboy", "Ultraman" and "Mysterians" knock-offs. AND, I'll throw in free pirate t-shirts with matching sweatsuits and wristwatches.

AND, I'll throw in a million counterfeit American Dollar Bills, stolen gold and manufactured fantasy debt. Along with terrorism to invasion to occupation to poverty to diseases to government made empty skyscrapers to internet trolling to computer virus / hack attacks on The West to internet fraud and identity theft to Wikipedia entries... the endless list of all the usual suspects. Holey moley, Batman!!

Complete with a giant dinosaur movie made-in-japan, from "gojira" on up.

Ya, we know all about japan and asia. If you believe certain show-business press of their own making, you'd have thought they'd invented The Universe with their bare totalitarian hands.

And, according to them, they invented Google now, too. Isn't that novel.

You seem like such a sweet girl, but truth needs to be told.

Also, Richard Fleischer did. Not the other guy.

@The Sharp Dressed Lady: Actually he did work on Tora Tora Tora he simply was not credited for it officially.

To say he stole from Hollywood is quite a stretch considering that the Magnificent Seven was a retelling of the Seven Samurai. Rehashing themes goes directly to Hollywood sorry, but America steals from Asia FAR more than the reverse.

Calling me too young is going a bit far by the way. But thank you for commenting.
