Origin
Everything's bigger and better in California...the nouveau riche must be entertained after all. So what do you get? New cuisine. Hollywood. Quixotic hobbies. And, of course, super-heroes. The flashier, the better, with costumes that put the films to shame. Oh, the glamor, ooh-la-la.
Now let's go to a small town near Stanford, by the name of Palo Alto. It's a quiet place, filled with parks, fruit trees, and Silicon Valley executives. Basically the most perfect weather you'll find anywhere in the states. Well, in a small single-storied house lived a young family, husband and wife lawyer duo who were just about ready to start an honest-to-God family. Living the American dream, they were.
So they had a daughter, and they named her Johanna. She grew up.
At 19, Johanna was skydiving (payed for by one of her mother's clients, who, ironically, she had defended from claims of negligence) when the first extra-ordinary event of her life occurred. Her parachute failed to open, and the backup chute was turn. It looked very likely that this would be the last extra-ordinary event of her very short life.
She hit the ground.
And
Was
Absolutely
Fine.
Despite the blast radius, despite the ashy landing field, Johanna got up and walked away. No big deal. This was California after all.
Taking up the name Meteor, Johanna joined the super-hero culture. This was the equivalent of a meta-human WWE, with staged battles and dramatic subplots. No one was ever really hurt, and arch-rivals might be seen getting their lattés together after the show was over for the day. It was an idea way for a young meta or martial artist to determine their strengths and limitations in a more-or-less safe setting.
All fun and games, our modern gladiators, battling it out in mockery of humanity's strife.
Meteorite Rising
Let's not be vain...Meteor was not the best of the play-heroes. Not to say she was the worst. But perhaps she was the most moral, the least lackadaisical. She wanted to accomplish something in life. She had learned what she could, but it was time to move on. A hero in Germany, a technological genius, was offering a scholarship of sorts. Johanna applied, putting down all the money she had earned from merchandising, etc, as a deposit. She was accepted.
Johanna packed her bags, bid her family adieu, and hopped on a plane for Munich. The California playground was left behind...this was the real world now.
Now, we must break briefly to talk about Johanna's mentor. He was, for a time, a very respected hero. However, an investigation, prompted by the very mentoring program that Johanna had been accepted into, showed that our hero (who, due to legal reasons, we shall call Hansel) had been embezzling and laundering money for years. As the case is still in court, we unfortunately cannot reveal details either regarding his identity, or his abilities. We will simply end by saying that as a hero he was unmatched, but corruption sinks its tendrils into the best of us.
When Johanna stepped off the plane, Hansel was waiting for her. Before she could even say hello, he had launched a brutal attack...Johanna was completely unprepared, and if Hansel hadn't pulled back at the last minute...
Well, that was never really a concern. Instead of delivering the killing blow, Hansel offered Johanna his hand and helped her back to her feet. "Lesson one mein liebes" he said, his accent something straight out of a spy movie. "Anyone can be your enemy."
And so, for the next few years, Johanna was tempered from play-hero to someone who might actually change the world.
For now, the details of how, and Johanna's time on Hansel's team (for a while, one of the most prestigious in the world) must be left blank. I'm sorry, meine Freunde, but it is the law. Perhaps in time...
Well, when all was said and done, the flashy Meteor was no more. What was left? Well, it is all expressed in Johanna's new choice of name. A meteorite is a meteor that has survived its fall through Earth's atmosphere, has burned, but has pulled through and reached a brave new world.
And so it was Meteorite that returned to America, Meteorite who had grown and changed, and Meteorite who was ready to leave her mark on the world.
Powers and Skills
Johanna possesses a degree of invulnerability that increases the faster she moves. If she reaches a high enough speed, she cannot be harmed by physical force, or by environmental factors such as lack of oxygen. However, she is unable to fly or run at super-human speeds, and must rely on outside sources to increase her velocity. Under her own power she can move just fast enough to prevent a blade or bullet (small caliber) from being fatal.
Moving quickly creates a kinetic energy buildup that Johanna must release. She can do this in three ways:
1. Creating a 'comet tail'
2. At the moment of impact, creating a blast wave
3. Releasing focused blasts, but they still must be at the moment when momentum ceases
She is unable to store the energy, and it must be released.
Johanna is skilled in hand-to-hand combat, mainly boxing and judo.
Gear/Equipment
Rocket Pack
One of Johanna's friends from her early heroing days built her a jetpack. It runs on hydrogen that it pulls from the air, and can store up to about an hour of power. Instead of exhaust it releases water, which can be stored and used to put out any blazes Johanna inadvertently sets.
Armor
Because she can't be in motion all the time, its important for Johanna to protect herself from attacks. Her armor is lightweight and nylon-based. She is unwilling to sacrifice security for mobility, so the armor only covers her chest, back, forearms/gloves, and shins. Her mask, when she wears one, is made of the same material.
Grappling Hook
Johanna can use this to get up high, thus setting her up to drop down on any opponents. She has an attachment with sticky prongs that she can use to grab on to low flying aircraft, flying metas, etc.
