The Best of the Best

Just my top 10 favorite comic book characters. Considering that I'm a huge fan of superhero comics, don't be surprised if half of them are superheroes/villains. Everyone's doing one of these lists; I don't want to feel left out. I'll be leaving out the obvious ones, i.e. Spider-Man (Peter Parker).

List items

  • I've been a huge fan of Virgil ever since I was a kid. His TV show was one of my favorites, and one of the many reasons why I got into comic books in the first place. He COULD be DC's street-centric answer to Spider-Man, but DC doesn't know a good thing when it's staring them in the face.

  • This dude's life is like a conga line of tragedy and loss. It's a wonder he hasn't killed himself, and it's for that reason (and many more) why Luther is one of the most introspective, darkest representation of the archetypical hero. It helps that Petra is freaking awesome. She's like a badass version of Mary Jane. Luther, on the other hand, has evolved almost as much as Spider-Man over the course of time. He's gone from wannabe superhero teenager, to superhuman Punisher, to a zen-like superhuman peacekeeper. The dude is awesome, and I'd love to see him in at least one crossover; don't care who.

  • There's just something about a book about a barbarian from the 6th Century being kidnapped by aliens, working as a slave for centuries, then returning with the most advanced suit of sentient alien armor that captures my attention right the hell away. Aric is one of those characters that's just fun to watch grow and develop.

  • Do I really need to explain myself when it comes to this force of nature? He's a king, a superhero, and one of the top 10 smartest people on the Earth. If he has a 20 inch penis then he's automatically the best character Marvel has.

  • Is it weird that I prefer him to his father? He's much more charismatic, and up until now, his powers over electricity put him over his dad power-wise. I liked him when he was a kid with his adoptive sister Angel Murphy, so I love him even more now that he's taken over his dad's series. Honestly, I hope he stays in the title role for a long time, like when Jim Downing took over as Spawn. It also didn't hurt to watch him catch Dart's throwing darts like a straight up gangsta.

  • Invincible (Mark Grayson) is an amazing character by himself, but if I had to be honest, nearly all of his supporting characters are more interesting to read about than he is, with the exceptions of the Guardians of the Globe, the Actioneers, and most of the second class superheroes. Eve is one of them; she's basically a more intriguing, superhero version of Mary Jane mixed with some Carol Danvers for good measure. Plus, she has to have one of the greatest superhero names ever.

  • I would go as far as to say that Miles is one of the greatest to ever assume the role of Spider-Man, bar none. Unlike many of the others who have come into the role, Miles doesn't jump into the hero role immediately. He has his reservations; like any normal kid who has seen the consequences that being Spider-Man has, and yet he still has the courage to jump into the role for no better reason than because he has the ability.

  • Rabbit ronin who fights ghosts with a samurai sword. I don't think I need to explain myself here.

  • For starters, I love the dynamic that this guy has with Toyo Harada, and how it seems to me that all Peter needs is one horrible day, and he ends up exactly like the thing that he hates. He is, hands down, one of the greatest telepathic/telekinetic characters in comic books. He's certainly better than Jean. At least he doesn't just indiscriminately read the minds of everyone around him (not on purpose, anyway) and he's still portrayed as human, despite basically being capable of godlike feats.

  • New 52 has done her wrong. My girl here has to be the one of the best to be Batgirl, second only to Barbara Gordon. I like her a helluva lot more than Stephanie Brown. Cassandra accepts the role like she was born to it.
