They Ruined Captain Marvel

Anyone remember that lovable boy scout Billy Batson who became the legendary Captain Marvel with a shout of the name "SHAZAM!!!" well after the DC relaunch, he's no longer there. He is now the dark brooding baby who whines about his adopted family not being his real family but has a good heart after defending his adopted sibling from bullies even though later on, he tells that little girl "hey we're not related, leave me alone" oh my bad he's not captain marvel anymore, he's Shazam now. WHAT?!?! don't get me wrong I love the relaunch and what they did with the MAIN heroes but because I am a huge fan of captain marvel. It really irks me that they took the lovable boyscout and basically made him a whiner about his "oh-so-tragic" past like batman

well it does suck IMO but the rest is pretty much awesome

now on the topic at hand

I dont agree at all - I love Billy's pretend to not care and then actually care personality. He does good as a choice, not because he was programmed to. He's not just a boyscout, now he is much more. Im liking it a lot, one of my favorite things in the New52. But I guess not everyone can share the same opinion

@Jorgevy: we already have someone who pretends not to care but actually does, his name is batman. Billy Batson has always been someone who always been optimistic even after the tragedy in his life. They made him a crybaby. Yes losing family members can be upsetting but you get over it at some point. you don't verbally attack a little girl just because "we're just adopted, you're not my family wah wah wah"

I'm not against the idea of Billy as an "Artful Dodger" type, but the "Shazam" thing does irk me.

@18batman: N52 BB has nothing to do with Batman. And the more the story goes the more we can see that deep down he is a good person, that just happens to be a rebellious pre teen to shield himself. He is starting to form family ties and soon we'll see more of that good side and less of the whiny side, which is not even exactly present. It's not that he is whiny, he just can't really deal with something like that specially considering his age

Makes you wonder how he got his powers, since he isn't innocent of heart or anything like that...

This. He's acting like a lot of foster kids and adapted kids act at times to cope with life. I like this scenario over him having a perpetually sunny outlook, that's unrealistic.

He's pretty obviously going to undergo character development that'll end up with him changing his ways. Hell, it's already happening, just slowly. His "past" honestly isn't all that much more tragic than it was before, was it? I mean, they've gotta address it here because this is his origin story, I doubt it'll be something that will be mentioned often.

I think the biggest issue is that this could very easily be a full title on it's own. Being restricted to a couple pages at the back of Justice League means it's moving ahead too slowly.

I think he is innocent at heart, he's just a typical teenager lashing out at the world with abandonment issues. I think the story is him coming throught it once his life is turned upside again with the introduction of Shazam.

I like the new Billy, it adds depth to his character, he's not just some innocent, always happy go lucky kid anymore.

Geoff Johns is just trolling. He can write a perfectly good Billy when he wants to *points at his JSA*

@18batman: i feel exactly the same way, even dr sivana's new look bothers me. billy was the exception , especially when he become captain marvel , his child-like innocence in a god's body made him a great hero . now we are going to get a angst-ridden, whiny hero? prime from malibu comics was like that if you have to look it up, my point is made lol.

I think his attitude is just a defensive outer shell he's built so he doesn't get hurt by the people who get close and eventually exit his life. I think that he's still the same Billy but he refuses to show it and The Wizard see's that inside of Billy and forces it out.

The Shazam name is pretty stupid. You wouldn't call Ronald McDonald McRib because that's what people associate with his name.

Posted by TheBigRedCheese

@sesquipedalophobe: I was wonder if they were going to rename Static, Stactic SHOCK since I'm always hearing people call him that.

I dislike the new Billy/Shazam as well. I prefer the sunny, whimsy version of the character and if I wanted "realistic", I wouldn't be reading superhero comics.

I agree i also dislike New 52 Billy Batson because he is a jeark

Billy Batson from the New 52 is actually a retty interesting character and this is supposed to be a reboot so he has to be different. He can't be the same character as before.

Whats up with new users starting accounts just to post a rant about a complaint?? Its obvious that he's slowly returning to his more goldhearted roots. Its happening slowly so DC can tell more stories and show character development. What's stronger: a charcter that learns to triumph in the face of adversity or someone who bursts on the scene "I'm awesome and don't feel sadness!"? Thats the point of the relaunch: same character, new direction.

Yeah, what? For starters; the wizard hasn't been portrayed as Islamic at all, and if anything Black Adam is from ancient Egyptian and would believe in it's pantheon.

This is why I love Batman. He's not programmed to do good, he's capable of unspeakable things; he chooses to fight his pain and anger just enough to do good things because he believes it's right.

This is the essence of a good character. Internal conflict that proves their own self-confidence and strength of character.

Although to be fair I haven't read a single book with "Shazam" in it. Plus, isn't that supposed to be the name of the wizard, not the guy who has the powers of the wizard? Way to fail DC.

Posted by StuckOnEuropa

I'm not a fan of this version of the character either. Reading about a whiny teenager isn't my idea of fun, but I'm sure the Batson will come around...eventually.

Posted by StuckOnEuropa

@minigunman123: I believe they changed the character's name because people who have not read a comic with Captain Marvel in it believes his name is Shazam. DC caters to these people because they aren't allowed to use the name Captain Marvel thanks to Marvel owning rights to the name, so they decided to just name him Shazam. I always liked calling the character CM.

Posted by minigunman123

@StuckOnEuropa: But... Didn't DC have the rights to "Captain Marvel" first?

Posted by StuckOnEuropa

@minigunman123: If I remember correctly, DC grabbed the rights to Captain Marvel after Marvel already made their Captain Marvel. I'm sure you can just wiki the character and it may get more into detail about why DC can no longer call the character Captain Marvel on covers, toys and other things.

Posted by minigunman123

@StuckOnEuropa: Huh. I might just do that :\

To be honest I never had any comics of Cap Marvel, but I always thought he was cool. I saw him in TV shows/specials and in Infinite Crisis and know what he's capable of, just never read his comics :\ now I wish I had.

Billy is 15, have you ever met a kind hearted 15-year-old? 13-15 are like the most dog eat dog ages in life! It's also around about that time that you decide what kind of person your going to be, up until then you are what your experinces make of you. I think It will be nice to watch him mature and see who he becomes.
