Let me be frank, I'm new to comic books. The DCnU is why I got into them. I read two issues of Flash and then went straight to Stephanie Brown's run of Batgirl, but I digress. What kills me most about the DCnU isn't that everything is ~different.~ I only know what it was like before because of Wikis. It doesn't matter to me.

Nope, what grates is that they had a clean slate and the perfect chance to fix everything. All of it. They could have given homes to characters that'd been shafted or killed off or misplaced by the new 'verse (Steph, Wally, etc), especially if the fans wanted them back. Every mistake they'd made with the continuity? Fixable. And all with the ability to edit and break it all down into a new 'verse that's smaller and easier to access. Not only that, but they could have cut down on the BEWBS AND BLOOOOOD where they didn't belong, evened out the gender ratio, toned down some of the sexism that comes with decades of continuity, and the excuse to hide behind that provides.

Probably the most frustratingly, they could have made a huge step towards what serious comic book fans have been waiting for for decades: Comics being taken seriously, and seen as a, not adult, but mature medium. I'm not saying that every series had to be a deep, thoughtful Sandman ripoff or that Power Girl had to lose the attraction of her costume or whatever else. Just taking out what doesn't belong and giving the readers more variety, and a chance to find something more if they're looking for it. Sure a lot of fans wouldn't have liked it. A lot of fans wouldn't like the New 52 if each issue came with your own superpowers at the bottom of every box. It's just that DC had the chance to do something really fantastic and iconic and positive with their universe, but it doesn't even look like the thought crossed their minds. (Except for the Alan Scott thing. Go, DC Look at what could have been.)

They were too occupied making Billy Batson Angsty McRage Boy and finding new ways to make Catwoman's anatomy not make sense.
