Origin
The Reckoner is an alias taken on by a bounty hunter who possesses notable, unique, and highly dangerous parahuman attributes. He is exceedingly dangerous, his parahuman powers enabling him to wipe out entire criminal cells with little effort. He poses a danger to everyone in his presence, his unique "aura" rippling through his surrounding environment. Most can barely endure being in his presence, let alone fight him; should they remain nearby him for too long, they run the risk of developing highly debilitating illnesses, falling prey to vertigo, nausea, and potentially, death. Perhaps this is why, then, he feels nothing for those around him, a trait that makes him well-suited to his line of work. Chandler's found his calling as a bounty hunter, willing to play both sides of the fence as he relentlessly hunts his targets.
In an effort to escape the authorities, as well as find more work, Chandler has set up shop in Gothic City. He consistently masquerades as a criminal in order to gain their trust, while at the same time working to take them in and claim their bounty. He has no qualms about killing to protect himself, but prefers work to be as smooth as possible.
Powers
Discombobulation Field / Vibration Aura: Perhaps the only documented instance of this superhuman power belongs to the Reckoner, which makes him even more dangerous, as the lack of conclusive information regarding his power makes it very difficult to prepare for. His body constantly produces a sonar-like vibration, sending out waves of energy in pace with his heartbeat. This field is highly detrimental to any living being within it; prolonged exposure to the field drastically affects the body's internal organs, causing them to rupture, resulting in instant death. The field's consistent vibrations have been consistently shown to mess with the natural equilibrium of another human's body, causing their heart to beat irregularly, or creating small vacuums within the bloodstream; others have reported massive nausea, headaches, and even temporary blindness. Chandler can will the field to either "thin," making it more tolerable for others, or "intensify," resulting in massive trauma for those caught nearby him. Additionally, he can manipulate the field like a sonar system, subconsciously mapping out his surroundings as the reflected vibrations return to him. This grants him borderline perfect knowledge of his surrounding environment in a 360 degree radius; he can sense projectiles moving through the air, detect opponents through doors and walls, and even throw ordinary objects with enough precision to instantly kill a foe.
Equilibrium Disruption: Any living being that remains in Chandler's presence for even a short amount of time will begin to pick up on the constantly oscillating vibrations emitted by his body. These vibrations affect the body in extremely detrimental ways, particularly the body's state of equilibrium. This internal balance is necessary for a being to continue living; it dictates everything from breathing to digestion to making rational thoughts. Whilst exposed to Chandler's disruption field, a human being may find themselves losing control of their own internal organs, resulting in deadly, terrible consequences. Chandler can will the field's effects to lessen, dampening his internal vibrations, or to intensify, drastically harming anyone nearby him. There are different "tiers" of intensity, each one affecting a being differently.
Frequency Tier 0 (Powers "Off"): Mild, inexplicable discomfort.
Frequency Tiers 1-3: Shortness of breath. Stomach cramps. Slight headache. Dizziness. Loss of balance. Ringing in the ears. Induces nightmares in those sleeping nearby. Sweating. Prolonged exposure may cause unexpected menstruation in females. Anxiety attacks. Vision distorting "eye floaters."
Frequency Tiers 4-7: Cumulative effects of Tiers 1 through 3. Vomiting. Nosebleeds. Muscle spasms. Temporary paralysis. Inexplicable, piercing pain. Burning sensation. Watery eyes. Brief, unrealistic hallucinations. Loss of bowel control, loss of bladder control. Dehydration. Victims experience psychedelic, colorful changes to the surrounding environment. The pulses become audible to others.
Frequency Tiers 8-10: Cumulative effects of Tiers 1-7. Internal bleeding. Ruptured organs. Full-body paralysis. Asphyxiation. Prolonged, lifelike hallucinations. Intense pain. Projectile vomiting. Inability to diffuse oxygen properly throughout the body. Insanity.
Frequency Tier 11: Instantaneous death, in most cases. Rarely seen.
It is notable that Chandler cannot instantly apply the effects of later "Tiers" without either expending considerable amounts of his own energy, or remaining nearby a target for a long enough period of time for his powers to take hold on their system. He cannot readily jump to tier 11, for example, without expending massive amounts of his own energy to do so. However, were he nearby his target for a long enough period, they would be far more susceptible to his equilibrium-distorting field. Because sound travels through nearly everything, including force fields, the effects of his distortion field can only be dampened, not completely stopped.
The effects of Chandler's equilibrium distorting field are practically irresistible; even a foe with an advanced healing factor would succumb to the devastating distortion waves emanating from his form. Because they do not introduce any new materials to the body, they cannot be nullified through mere vaccinations or regenerative techniques; they work off of the body's own natural equilibrium, no matter how powerful it may be. Chandler's deadly field can not be overcome through sheer will, as the even the body's thought processes are not safe from his constant interference. The effects of Chandler's field scale in relation to the durability of a foe; even if they could survive a rocket to the chest, they would nonetheless find their own internal systems working against them.
Sonar Mapping: The same sonic field that disrupts other life forms' bodies also aids Chandler in navigating his environment. The constantly moving soundwaves travel throughout his nearby environment, his brain actually picking up on the same signal and using it to map his area. He is not exactly aware of how this ability works; it is almost entirely subconscious. He would describe it as a feeling of being able to know precisely where something is, even through a wall. The more intense his field, the greater the detail he can "see" his surroundings with. This sonar mapping grants him a huge advantage in any encounter, letting him react to blindingly fast attacks that most normal men wouldn't even see coming. It also grants him uncanny agility, his intimate knowledge of his surroundings enabling him to move with haste through a cluttered, dangerous area. He can throw regular household objects with enough accuracy to severely injure a target, ranging from telephones to pencils to even lamps. His accuracy with a handgun is also equally impressive, his constant unmatched knowledge of his environment giving him a major edge in any engagement.
The intuitive dexterity granted to Chandler through the sonar waves is akin to the agility of an ape; it is tied directly to his sense of balance and movement, enabling him to perform complex maneuvers without even having to so much as train in order to carry them out. His balance is uncanny, along with his sense of self. He has constant knowledge of his alignment in relation to the ground, so as to be able to change his position in mid-air in order to land on his feet. Additionally, these constant pulses give him intrinsic knowledge of a foe's stance, such as where they apply their weight and the ideal area for him to strike. In this way, without even a day of formal training, Chandler can be an equal match for even the most advanced martial artist.
Electronics Disruption: The same sonic field emitted by Chandler has been observed to have unique, highly detrimental effects on any advanced equipment. These precise effects are generally unpredictable, but they have ranged from unexpected short-circuits to complete blowouts. Any weakened or dampened signals in the area would be almost completely shut down; phone lines have been reported to go dead in his presence. Advanced electronics have been known to experience malfunctions, shutting down as he walks nearby them. He can mitigate these malfunctions through focus, should he desire to operate a motor vehicle, or make a phone call.
Abilities
Experienced Brawler: Chandler's unarmed fighting style predominantly includes street brawling, involving heavy, wild punches at an opponent. Typically, however, his parahuman power is more than enough to disrupt the focus of any superior fighter, so as to even the odds. He capitalizes his opponent's weaknesses, forcing them off-balance. It is common for him to make use of his surroundings in a battle, driving his foes into walls or off of ledges. Up close, it is common for him to tackle them, forcing them to remain close to his body so as to maximize the effects of his deadly vibration field.
Top-tier Physique: In order to meet the physical demands that his job entails, Chandler has honed his physique through a mixture of daily routine and in-the-field experience. He has the endurance of a professional athlete, as well as the musculature of a hardened combatant. His physicals and dexterity are sufficient to allow him to perform advanced physical maneuvers. He is a coordinated climber, able to scale most objects freehand should he have enough leverage and grip. His upper body strength is enough to lift another man above his head and throw him.
Improvisational, Savage Combatant: Chandler will turn anything into a weapon, making maximum use of his parahuman abilities to coordinate his attacks. By targeting an opponent's weak spot, he'll strike with just the right tool, devastating them through a combination of repeated beatings and exposure to his deadly aura. He has no notable durability, though, so it is common for him to strike fast and retreat, letting his discordant aura do work while he recuperates. He is stealthy, unable to afford charging into a fight due to his regular human durability. In the past, he has made use of rocks, beer bottles, knives, baseball bats, lead pipes, guns, aerosol cans in conjunction with matches, tasers, brass knuckles, chains, and even normal everyday objects that could be found in a living room to lethally wound opponents.
Adaptive Technique: Chandler can instantly change up his strategy in the midst of combat, making precise notations regarding the habits and capabilities of his foes. Should one attack fail, he can instantly come up with another kind, based solely on what he knows of an opponent and their style.
Extremely Elusive: Chandler's fighting style focuses entirely on dodging. He has no extensive durability to speak of, so he utilizes his radar to avoid attacks, able to choreograph an opponent's strike in his head and react sufficiently to avoid or mitigate extensive damage. His physique compliments this fighting style, as he is particularly slender; he doesn't have the straight muscle to tank any major wound, so he sticks to the shadows, often hiding behind corners or balancing atop furniture. His vibration field is extraordinarily acute; he has been noted to dodge arrows mid-flight, even catching them with his hands after they had been fired from the bow. This characteristic agility is more reflexive than honed, as he is no gymnast, but he is extremely slippery.
Intrinsic Aptitude: Chandler is talented at learning new techniques and making use of new styles in the moment. In keeping with his adaptability, he readily grasps new concepts; for example, he once operated a forklift without any knowledge of how one may work, using it to break into a fortified warehouse and eliminate two threats at once with the fork, despite having never driven one. His incredible reaction times work in tandem with his motor vehicle performance; he is an incredibly talented driver.
Paraphernalia
- Chandler considers his cyan motorcycle helmet and flamboyant neon vest to be his trademarks. He has multiple versions of the same outfit, as they are often dirtied during a job.
- Chandler has been known to wear a bulletproof mesh underneath his vest on several occasions. He often arms himself with silenced firearms, in addition to his characteristic close-quarters weapons. He is proficient in the use of conventional firearms.
- One of Chandler's signature aptitudes is his tendency to turn anything into a lethal tool, and to "repossess" dropped weapons of his enemies.
Transportation
Chandler owns a variety of vehicles, each kept safely hidden in various locations around Gothic. Typically, he would make use of a motorbike, maintained to the point of maximum efficiency, but he has been known to make use of many different kinds of vehicle. It is common for him to repossess the cars of various pedestrians or even the typically high-class vehicles of his targets, keeping them for later use. Without the intervention of Gothic authorities, it's relatively easy to keep and maintain a stolen vehicle without much of a problem. One of these vehicles he so casually stole from its owner was an armored car, designed for the transportation of money from a bank to a private institution outside of Gothic.
Mental State
While it is indeed part of his falsified identity, Chandler is notably less psychopathic than he acts, or at least to a lesser degree than most rumors paint him. He uses these to his advantage, of course, encouraging the concept that he's capable of any evil. In reality, he's far more reserved, even logical and intelligent. While it could be argued that he is a psychopath, he's certainly not "evil," nor is he sadistic or malicious. While Chandler is antisocial, due to the nature of his powers, and perhaps unbalanced (as evidenced by his choice of profession), calling him insane is a bit of a stretch.
