Professor Charles Xavier is the creator of the X-Men and founder of the Xavier School for Gifted Youngsters. His dream of peaceful coexistence between mutants and humanity has long been the driving force for the X-Men. An immensely powerful telepath and scientific genius, Xavier was among the world's greatest masterminds. Killed at the hands of a Phoenix crazed Cyclops, Xavier's memory and dream still remains and motivates his X-Men to keep fighting for a world that fears and hates them.
Charles Xavier is very resourceful and his telekinesis signifies his interest in empathic communication. While the other X-Men represent a modern age fascination with genetics, Professor X's mastery over the mind partially represents a modern age fascination with 'wireless communication' (i.e., computers, smartphones, etc.).
Today, the vast array of computers connected to the Internet creates a virtual 'telepathic network.' The vast array of globally-connectable mobile smartphones enhances a human being's ability to communicate instantaneously and wirelessly (and hands-free with speaker-phone features).
If Professor X can connect mentally to Jean Grey and others like Lilandra and/or Wolverine, then certainly we can imagine him connecting telepathically to Squirrel Girl and perhaps even squirrels. Don't they train monkeys to work with computers?
I don't see any reason we should bar Xavier from the ability to link with animals when real world humans communicate and sync over TCP/IP enabled user-interface wireless email!
