His name in the japanese version of the anime is Satoshi, obviously named after the Pokemon series creator Satoshi Tajiri and his surname from the english dub comes from the english slogan "Gotta catch em' all!"

In the original japanese version of the anime, his name is Shigeru, most likely named after Shigeru Miyamoto, who is a video game designer from Nintendo. After the Johto silver conference, Gary decides to quit being a pokemon trainer and instead becomes a pokemon researcher, just like his grandfather.
Green's childhood hasn't been as easy as her fellow trainers from Pallet town. As a child she was kidnapped by Ho-Oh and taken to Johto where she was trained to be a trainer/thief.
