Professor Horton was trying to create a normal android model of a human being, the flaming skin to the android was merely a accident. Later, Horton abandoned Jim Hammond (the Human Torch). Later he would create another android by name of Adam 2, which became evil. He would later change his name to Thomas Raye and get married. He had a step-daughter Frankie Raye who would have an accident with chemicals that help create the Torch. She would go on to be called Nova.
