Comic Vine Podcast 09-06-13

We're back! Sort of. This week Mat joins Tony in order to talk about Chewbacca and Care Bears. Well, we didn't really talk about Chewbacca. But we did talk about Batwoman, Forever Evil, Nightwing, Spider-Man 2099 and lots more.

Awesome haven't commented in ages, everyone well? If anyone needs an opinion of Batwoman, Suicide Squad or the mystic corners of Marvel and DC , gimme a post. Hoping my email was read on this. If no, then no worries.

DC editorial is absolute trash. They are clearly the one dictating the stories and they're pissing all their talent away. Batwoman is one of the few books worth picking up from them and then they go and anger the creators so far that they completely abandon the book.

Their editorial really needed to be taken to task for how they are running that company.

Did they say that Wolverine doesn't have his own series? He has "Wolverine", "Wolverine MAX", "Japan's Most Wanted" and "Savage Wolverine", just off the top of my head. Then he's in Wolverine and the X-Men, Uncanny X-Men, All New X-Men, various Avengers books, and was in the last issue of adjectiveless X-Men too.

@g_man From what I have heard, the radio show came up with "Faster than a Speeding bullet..." (or maybe that came from the cartoon or TV show) and Kryptonite. Originally he had no weakness in the comics and he was from a foster home. Also his original powers didn't include flying, it was like the Hulk where he could jump really far. He was also a lot more aggressive and angry and violent, grabbing a criminal and throwing him the length of a football field to his probable death off panel. But Siegel and Schuster did come up with superheroes in costumes when they gave Superman a "strongman" from the circus type outfit.

People may still be buying the big event crossover stuff because thats sort of all there is now.

DC doesn't have a problem with marriage, in my opinion. They have a problem with writers not knowing how to write adult characters in stable relationships. Marvel's not much better nowadays, seeing as just about every prominent couple has been broken up (Cyclops and Jean, Spidey and MJ, etc.)

Both companies seem to be run by man-children who can't wrap their heads around these characters having actual responsibilities beyond punch X in the Y because they are threatening to blow up Z.

Loved what they did with Nightwing and what it could potentially mean for the character. Sorry to those who have been enjoying his current solo, but to me the book and the character has been just standard fair. Just Batman-lite stories with a tone changed a bit to fit Nightwing more minus the interesting villains Batman has. My main problem with Dick in the reboot was how isolated they made his character, Babs is kind of his only friend now and he's hardly interacted with anyone, but with what happened to him in Forever Evil he was thrown back into the center of the DCU and can become that character who has so many connections with so many other heroes again instead of just a Batman knockoff in Chicago. Maybe this can even lead to him joining the Justice League once they have to rebuild. I'd love to see him on a team like that where we can see him build back up these relationships again on panel.

Also it could solve another problem the character has had even before the reboot, which is that he never had a solid direction outside of being a hero. He was a student, a cop, ran a museum, and now even ran Haly's Circus for a bit. Nothing ever stuck, but with these new developments he can just become a full time hero possibly and accept that is what he is meant to do with his life.

I've never read Planetary or Transmetropolitan either. Both are hailed as modern day classics but Warren Ellis isn't always my cup of tea. Glad to hear other people are digging the Killing. It seems to be stuck in the shadows of AMC's more popular shows. I've been watching since the first episode. When there's new episode it's a Sunday night event for me and my girlfriend.

So wait, Tony, you tell us all the time not to freak out over a 3 star review because after all, that means it is still a good comic, but when Mat says that he would have given the recent issues of SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN a 3 star, well, your response ... "WHAT?!?!?!"

I think he reacted like that more because we're usually on the same page when it comes to reviews.

Good podcast, but I'll be honest Tony: the lighthearted way in which you joked about Schindler's List was legitimately offensive to me.

The no marriage edict is a symptom, not a cause. What should have been discussed is how many writers have fallen to these last minute editorial changes, which are not making your comics better, kids.

http://guttersandpanels.com/gutters-and-panels/2013/3/23/the-new-52-timeline-of-departures

And now we find out they won't even allow the Batwoman team to finish with issue 26

http://comicsbeat.com/mark-andreyko-taking-over-batwoman/

Take a stand, don't support this type of treatment of creative talent nor useless gimmicks like Forever Evil. Buy comics from publisher committed to telling good stories.

Also, both Matt and Tony were grading in 1/2 stars on this podcast. Why is that still not an option for reviewers?

@bladewolf: Wow, really? Because I, in no way, joked at all about it. I just mentioned that the comic used a similar technique used in the movie. Black and white with a highlight of red. Then I mentioned one scene. So of course that is me making fun of a serious movie and horrible situation, right? I'm actually offended that you're making assumptions of what I would or would not joke about when you clearly do now know anything about my personal beliefs if you think I was poking fun at the movie.

Very good episode this week though I do miss Corey. I wanted to hear the Forever Young Evil song and some well timed guffaws. Mat was a very solid addition to the podcast offering some pretty good insight and humor to the show. I thought it was funny that he liked Relic for feeling like a fairy tale book yet Darkseid was a better fairy tale in my opinion. He didn't just kill the Gods outright he sowed the seeds of deceit to insure their defeat. Sure it's still ridiculous but it sizes him up as a greater threat to the greater DC universe.

Forever Evil is off to a pretty awesome start despite the small discrepancies in some art and plot. I think Lex will find a way to save Nightwing to get access to the Bat-cave to better combat the Crime Syndicate. It is his book after all. Dick may no longer be the same after this but I'm all for shaking up the character. I'm surprised his identity wasn't found out sooner with that tiny freaking mask. Thanks guys and keep up the great work. Long live the 5 star rating system!

Skype's compression rate keeps getting better and better. Plus, I own an expensive mic just for podcasting. Poor audio quality=poor podcasting

The Darkseid books fits well into a mythological tale, but the Relic books, especially because of the choice to use splash pages to tell the story, fits the "fairy tale" genre much better. Thanks for enjoying my super-sexy voice.

@g_man@inferiorego Probably asked about the Iron Giant/Superman comparison because in the film he wears an S on his chest and says he wants to be Superman. But also both stories are a similar story arc. a being sent from space/or heaven who puts others before himself/or sacrifices himself for the greater good. Many stories in movies and books follow this. I had to learn about it in story class at college. E.T. follows a similar arc as well, and I am sure I could think of others if I took the time.

You can really break that down to the Heroes' Journey, from Joesph Campbell's Hero With a Thousand Faces. It's basically the idea that the most unlikely people/beings can rise up to the occasion and become a hero and they all go through this same journey. I highly recommend that book for anyone trying to become a better writer.

I haven't seen Iron Giant in sooooo long though. I could only remember that Vin Diesel was in it.

And I've finished the podcast, very enjoyable, ta ...

... hang on. Matt proposes but no one wants a wedding? This is DC meta-humour, yes?

And the Grimms over Dr Seiss, definitely - down with tweeness!

Was Matt channelling Corey? At times it was uncanny, especially his rrrrrrradioooo voice :)

@g_man I believe Greg Pak will be taking over Action Comics. I can't remember what issue.

Though I do wish it was Sholly Fisch, I loved his Action Comics back-ups and the Action Comics Annual #1.

In IDW solicitations for November, Fisch will be writing a Mr. Peabody & Sherman comic so that should be cool:)

The problem with PP and Mary Jane was that the weren't allowed to get a child.
