Comic Vine Podcast 05-04-12

James Robinson is back AGAIN. It's all about EARTH 2 this week (pretty much). There will be major spoilers so be sure to read the first issue first. James also reveals quite a bit of exclusive information on the future of the series and characters.

Need to get this book...

Totally agree with what Tony and James said about these long entry arcs.

James he's looking in the direction of her ass because he could hear sound bounce off of it. And it was a sound most pleasing.

WOO WHOO! James liked my comic's name, Monkey Boy! And I will do all the things you guys mentioned. Thanks for the advice. The web Comic is what the creator of Axe Cop said too, Ethan Nicolle. Thanks for answering my questions and mentioning Monkey Boy. That was so cool.

I thought maybe if JLA was made into a Pixar styled CG movie it might get done much faster, make the heroes look better than live action, and lead to solo spin offs for characters like Wonder Woman and Flash.

By the Way G-Man, the Joker "I can escape anytime I want" was in Infinite Crisis IIRC. (Possibly Final Crisis, but I doubt it.)

If Batman is going to die he would be emotional with someone he is close to he did spend decades visiting the place his parents died so he is not as closed off as many see him. Batman puts Joker in Arkham because he wants the regular system to work and take care of criminal punishment without always having to rely on him. I do think sometimes it is lazy to just always write Joker break outs there are other ways to bring him back.

The moment with Starfire and Barbara I think was retcon not how it originally was.

Nice Podcast, one of the better ones I believe you've made (the discussion format really plays to the staff's strengths in my opinion and makes for really interesting content). My third question was somewhat misinterpreted (I mean to follow up on the fact that James wanted to write Hawkman, instead of asking that =P) but still, having James Robinson here was pretty interesting and he gives quite interesting insight.

NO WONDER sara just gave "earth 2" a 4 out of 5 rating, knowing that james robinson was going to be in the podcast this week. .............just to get him upset about the score to reveal more stuff in upcoming issues.

BTW, with the release of "the avengers", i get the feeling that DC may have let, or even ordered, robinson to do two podcasts consecutively, just to keep DC in the minds of the comic public.

I loved Cry for justice, as well as James JLA run.

I found them both extremely charming, and filled with bang-on characterization, and consider both series too challenging for most comics readers.

My favorite part of this interview is Sara's reaction to discovering that Chyna is now a porn star!

You didn't have to do it, Sara; but I'm still glad you did.

Wait, Batman's dying? Wow, that's two spoils within as many weeks.

I strongly disagree with Sara about Batman being a masochist when it comes to Joker. I find it more interesting that Batman can't let himself cross that line, because he knows he has a darkness inside him that wants to cross that line. No matter how much he would want to kill him. Batman realizes that if he made that exception he would be doing it over and over and couldn't stop himself.

I would like Selina to be the mother of Helena Wayne.

Love listening to the podcast every week. Only criticism I would have is when taking fan questions, please don't ask rude/disrespectful questions to the guest. Whoever asked if "cry for justice was the worst of the worst thing you wrote" that's just fucking disrespectful to ask a creator/writer, and really that's what I would expect at other websites. At least ask the question in a nicer fashion or just use common sense and don't ask it all. Small nit pick of mine :) Love everything else!

Hey guys love the podcast but I must defend Mark Waid here. The thing with Daredevil's ... fingers ... is NOT in the pacing of the book. Yes, it does happen but not in the way you remember it. The only time. he. Matt puts his fingers up to his nose is when he is applying the Camphor/Menthol cream (as shown in most Hollywood productions) to go underground and deal with all the dead bodies. Black Cat is no-where around and has been long gone. The way you remember it, what you remember never actually happened. Don't listen (or in this case remember) to items from other sites that cut and paste images, to shock us comic readers. Anyway, love the site. Keep up the great work!!!!

EDIT - Of course, going back and looking at the issue again, it is an oddly placed picture. Obvious he is already underground, but yeah, it is a little closer than I originally thought. REAL close in fact. My bad, just ignore me.

Cheers for another great podcast, and thank you Tony for putting my query to James; and to James for answering.

Like James, I can see that his JLA run wasn't perfect, but by gum, it was a heck of a lot of fun, with some amazing ideas - some developed, some not … that final issue showing us what might have been was magnificent.

I'm with Sara, I never got the Dick/Kory romance, even though, like James, I was there from the start. Kory was sweet, but they were literally from different worlds.

This is a perfect example of why you shouldn't have the creator of a book sit in on his own review.

48 seconds into the Podcast and James Robinson is complaining that his 4 out of 5 was far too low of a score for this book. He takes offense to the word "Flowery" and spends the next 3 minutes bashing the review. In the end he admits that the dialogue is flowery, and that's just the way Batman is in Earth 2. He equates a 4 star review to an insult... "your breath smells like canker". Since when did a 4 out of 5 become such an insult? It's insulting to me that he would insinuate that a critic is "wrong".

Frankly, if I was reviewing your comics each month I would try to slip in 4 star review every now and then so people don't think that all your books automatically get a 5 star review because you're on the comicvine podcast. Y'know?

What a canker breath this episode has been. I think I'll be skipping these Robinson guest spots from now on.

I think someone just doesn't get english humour. I enjoyed it and I didn't even read Earth 2. I enjoyed hearing an explanation for the death of Lian Harper too. I really hated that, I actually thought he came across as quite humble.

I'm still not sold on Earth 2 though. Not because I expect it to be bad, it sounds and looks great, but because DC will probably delete the universe in their next big event or if not that one then the one after. They've actually deleted or flat out rebooted all my favorite characters from DC every time I time I give their books a chance like Linda Danvers, Power Girl, Helena Bertinelli, Ariella Kent, the Team Titans, Stephanie Brown, Cassandra Cain, Lyta Hall...so female characters basically. Why readers should become invested or excited in any of DC's new 52 titles, storylines or characters when these characters are likely to be deleted in DC's next big company wide event?

A Justice League porn movie hopefully will include Black Canary, Zatanna, Vixen, Mera, Fire, Ice, etc. A Legion porn movie might also be interesting.

On google image search, i have found an image of earth 2 Hawkgirl. She looks african or egyptian so maybe she has ties to the egyptian Nabu. She seems to have natural white wings. She also uses modern weapons like earth guns so she is probably an earthling.

@KingHippp0: Robinson wasn't seriously berating her, but rather asking for more detail in her critiques. And really, it was more in line with the usual teasing he gives her; don't take it that seriously. He seemed more interested in why she thought than what she thought.

But I actually think it's healthy for a critic to be challenged on their conclusions and to be asked to elaborate on their complaints. Creators have their work criticized by every Tom, Dick and Harry with a keyboard and an internet connection, and there's little to nothing they can do to respond to those criticisms.

Critics, while serving a valuable consumer-advice role, are parasitic in nature (I mean that in the nicest way possible). They do not create, and only comment on the work of others. An occasional face to face with the creators might be a good way to keep critics a little more grounded, and the back and forth between critic and creator might lead to real improvements. It goes without saying that creators shouldn't be bullying or intimidating critics, but I don't think that's what was happening here.

I'm really late to the party here, I just picked up Earth 2 this week and heard the podcast last night. But I was very shocked that Tony would sit with James Robinson and read out Billy Batson's absolutely insulting question. I know that user has a post count of about 2.5 million here, but that doesn't mean you should subject a creator to his heckling in the middle of the site's official podcast.

There is NOTHING of value in a "question" like "Can you just admit that Cry for Justice was the worst of the worst?" That's just an hateful little person, hiding behind their keyboard hoping they might break the spirit of a writer, for the crime of creating a story that they personally didn't like. It was doubly sad that both Tony and Sara both remained silent after dumping that in James's lap. It should have been a teachable moment for the Comic Vine community, where they could say "This is not respectful, this is not what we are looking for when we ask for user questions. Everyone should think of the Golden Rule when we interact with each other on this website."

In general, I have often been been scratching my head at the tone of the community at this site. No one seems to blanch at the frequent personal attacks on creators. Name-calling and declaring that a creator "should never get work again" seem to be common. A few weeks ago, someone responded to an article about Kevin Smith by wishing death upon him. I think the only response was "Inferiorego" saying that was a bit harsh. Most places on the internet don't let users get away with this.

It is your site, your business, and you decide to what degree it is moderated. I'm just saying that I feel you will limit future growth of the site if you allow the level of discourse to stay... toxic.

@GalacticPunt: Look how big IGN is and people troll on that site and say racist, bigoted, idiotic and hateful things all the time. Anyway i agree with you man I always try to be polite to fellow users on this site because i truly love this website and what it offers. I agree people should respect each other and just think before they write.
