Pluto is Ruler of Hades, the Olympian Underworld, God of the Dead and the brother of Zeus, supreme monarch and sky-father of the Olympian Gods. Upon Zeus' defeat and overthrow of their father Cronus, Pluto was given control and patronage of the Underworld while his brother Neptune was given the seas and oceans, and Zeus kept the heavans for himself. After countless millenia of being the lord of the underworld, Pluto is bitter about his lot in life and seeks a way out of his situation. His attempts to be free of his burden have lead him into conflict with Olympus' mightiest warrior and champion, Hercules. The first time Hercules and Pluto clashed in modern times was when Pluto tricked Hercules into signing an "Olympian Contract" compelling him to take over for Pluto as lord of the Underworld. Hercules was unable to get free of this contract with even all-father Zeus decreeing the contract binding. The Asgardian thunder god, Thor, fought on Hercules behalf, winning Hercules freedom and his eternal undying friendship as well. Most recently, Hercules again came into conflict with Pluto when he travelled to Hades to find an free Zeus so he could return to the land of the living and counter the mad schemes of his wife, Queen Hera.
