Pixie Strikes Back

This shouldn't be a surprise, given the over-use of this little X-Girl in the pages of Uncanny X-Men lately.  Pixie is getting her first mini series!  I honestly have mixed feelings about this.  I like a lot of the New X-Men characters that will be in this, but I can't shake the feeling that it will either have nothing ground breaking... or it will be groundbreaking but completely over-looked by the rest of the X-Titles just as X-Men: Worlds Apart was.

Kathryn Immonen will be writing, and Sarah Pichelli is on art;  that's the team from Runaways.  Here's what Marvel.Com's article has to say:

In December's X-MEN: PIXIE STRIKES BACK limited series-brought to you by the critically-acclaimed RUNAWAYS team of writer Kathryn Immonen and Sara Pichelli-that aforementioned scenario becomes reality for Pixie and her friends, Mercury, Blindfold, X-23, and Armor. Except, this being the X-Men, things will likely be much more complicated than lost wallets and flat tires, and the writer could not be happier to put them through it.

"I love all these girls together," Immonen says. "Even though they're all full-fledged X-Men, they're still kids, some of them more than others. They are also sisters of a sort."

Describing the series in broad strokes, Immonen notes, "It's a story about friendship and lies and betrayal and deception.  About how you can make the wrong decision for the right reason and about how difficult it can ultimately be to forgive that. And if that's not enough, it's also about stabbing and brawling and torture and Cessily in a cheerleader uniform. And girls' bathrooms."

In the midst of this whirling chaos, Pixie stands on the precipice of some life-changing discoveries, including the possibility that her father, unknown to her, might be well-known in the Marvel Universe as a villain.

"Honestly 'villain' is such a black and white kind of word, don't you think," teases Immomen. "Even the Red Skull is somebody's little boy."

Pixie has been fairly well-battered since she first arrived on the scene, but has so far managed to survive with her cheery personality largely intact. Immonen points to this resilience as a large part of why the character has quickly caught on with fans.

"Despite missing a chunk of her soul and having been dragged to hell and back, she's still fundamentally upbeat and resilient," the writer explains. "I think it may be a bit of a relief for readers, frankly. She's also cute and funny. She tends to run her mouth, when she hasn't got her foot stuck in it.  It makes for good reading."

Of course, Immonen did not always feel that way"

"Initially it was exactly those things that I found to be the least interesting about her. So it was more interesting to think about those qualities, which have up until now been responsible for her success as an X-Man, as the potential  basis for her undoing, at least in this story.   I started to consider the possibility that her adaptability, her inclination to go with whatever is thrown at her, that these things could actually be liabilities. That she could be too willing to accept a situation with disastrous consequences."

Every good comic needs a strong artist and PIXIE comes as no exception as Immonen once again collaborates with her RUNAWAYS partner Sara Pichelli and knows that she, the character, and fans will be in good hands.

"I know that we're both anxious to stretch a little on this project and I can't wait to get going," she insists. "'Fortunate' doesn't begin to describe how I feel about being paired up with Sara again.  Pixie doesn't know how lucky she is."

WHAT.... THE.... HELL?

@xxCellPhoneGirlxx: LOL!  I expected John V to hate this news.  In fact, I expected more guys to hate this.

Like I say, I have mixed feelings about this.  Pixie is being over-used at the moment, but I'd like to see more about her actual background and away from the hands of Matt Fraction.

Haha, well I'm definetly gonna buy it. I mean it interesting how such a background character became so popular.  The only thing that sucks is, no Surge? T.T

I'm probably going to get this. I like pixie, and most of the other new x-men, so yeah I might buy this if it turns out to be crap I'll be annoyed lol.

I am so sick of the whole pixie was beaten up by the hellfire cult and is now getting back at the world routine. Marvel has done the whole damaged little girl who learns combat to get back at her enemies thing... kitty pryde anyone?

So Pixie's mini feels more like clean up on her character history than anything else. Originally she was just a girl who's mutation is the reason for her appearance. A little soul stealing from Illyana is now the reason that she is able to use Magic. But after the fist issue of Pixie Strikes back, we discover her daddy is a demon and her Mother is mystical, all cool, but what should be a continuation of the character I love, feels more like another reboot to take her in a different direction. Maybe she'll receive TK and a body swap in issue 2.

Don't get me wrong, it wasn't dreadful at all (and i loved Sara P's art) but it just feels like this 16 year old will have gone through another change before the end of it. Which i guess I'd prefer to have instead of what we were given in Psylocke's mini... nothing. I do wish her "dark pixie" thing stuck a little longer... She and Armor would totally kick ass being cynical together.

I thought it was a decent read. nothing spectacular, kind of reminded me alot of the recent Nomad series.
at the very least it looks to be filling in some history for Pixie, which i think will help with some of the distaste
for her out there as alot of it stems from her being new and a partial enigma.

Why in the previews does Mercury have normal skin?  Has she finally controlled the colour side of her powers, or is it one of those famous holographic disguises?

I saw the first page & knew that something was going on straight away.  It doesn't take a genius to work that out when you see Mercury with caucasian skin and Blindfold with eyes :p

I don't understand why there's so much negativity around the first issue.  There have been far more confusing storylines.  It isn't as if this is the first story to start half-way through an adventure to keep the readers on their toes.  Weird things like this happen in comics all the time, so you know that nothing is as it seems... why the huge controversy??

Because they're warping Pixie's history again ]= She's supposed to be dark and moody seeing as how she lost an additional piece of her soul in Infernus, so why is she still so bubbly?? No one is that resilient... or maybe that's another one of her abilities. =/

Btw, there's a scene where the girls are in the bathroom looking in the mirror, Mercury is back to Metal and everyone is wearing their uniforms, but if you look closely you see that Ruth still has eyes.

@pixelized: I blame the writer of Uncanny X-Men for that.  What was his name again?  Well, you know that guy who forgets everything that all the others writers have done... For his crimes against continuity, other writers seem to pick up on what's established in Uncanny, instead of in New X-Men & X-Infernus.  So I understand why (even though I don't like it) people keep writing her as the eternal happy-go-luck cheerleader, instead of opting to give her genunie feelings & reactions.

That's funny!

Hmmmmm, seems everyone but Ruth is in costume...
@xerox-kitty: Even after having her violently attacked and her wings destroyed, she still harbors no hatred, He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named has made it so she can't be broken... so why all the tears in X-Infernus?

@pixelized: That picture is funny... But I guess Ruth is also the only one wearing normal clothes in the reflection too.  Weird.

I don't know.  He's just turned her into an eternal air-headed bimbo.  It's a complete waste of a character.  I liked it in New X-Men when she & Anole were inducted into the 'team'.  So much for her 'soul itches'.  Let's just mug her, thrash her, beat her up, and she'll still come out smiling... :p

It Is! It's like he doesn't respect the work that those before him put into her... i guess that's what happens when you hand a relatively new character over to someone else. But then again, that's how he treats all of his characters and it doesn't seem like he'll be leaving the title anytime soon... I thought dark reign was supposed to be over ]=

@pixelized: Yeah, I'd hoped he's be leaving soon.  But he seems to be Marvel's golden boy of the moment.  I still refuse to buy Uncanny until he's been replaced (which will be awkward when it comes to reading Second Coming... if I get that at all).

I think it's sad that for her spotlight-mini series, the writer isn't pushing her character away from the sugared-up, brain dead bint that she's portrayed as in Uncanny.

If you can tell how the first issue of a 4 issue mini series is going to be in 5 page preview, why do they even print the other 15 pages? Your post reeks of troll.

@xerox-kitty:
Seems that's the Pixie we're going to be stuck with... unless something major comes at the end of this to change her up once again. Even then, it'll probably be ignored.

I hope when she finds out who her father is it will finally throw her over the edge and actually get rid of the bimbo airheadedness that exists around her. Then maybe add some depth to her xD

@Kyle Devlin:

They throw her over edge, she might become a villian, like her sisters. And while the airhead pixie can be annoying, i would hate it if they turned her into a villian.

I doubt they'll turn her into demonic Dark Pixie on a regular basis.  Probably only for special occasions ;)
