Having changed the focus of their previous "junior" title, TV Comic, to strips aimed at older children, in 1966 Polystyle launched Pippin, named after the lead character in the BBC TV show The Pogles, which was also the basis for the early issue's cover strip. Pippin was squarely aimed at a younger audience, with text usually printed beneath the art panels and strips mostly based on cartoons and puppet TV shows licensed from their respective owners. Pippin's success saw a sister title, Playland, released in 1968, and when Playland was later cancelled in 1975 it was absorbed into Pippin, which temporarily renamed itself Pippin in Playland. After 1044 issues Pippin was eventually cancelled in September 1986, just two days after its twentieth birthday, and it was absorbed into Buttons.
Strips over the years included The Pogles, Andy Pandy, Bagpuss, Bill and Ben (the Flowerpot Men), Camberwick Green, Chigley and Trumpton, The Herbs, Ivor the Engine, Mr Benn, Morph, Sooty and Sweep, and Toytown (with Larry the Lamb).
