Awesome Toy Picks: Phantom Stranger (Signature Collection)

Posted by G-Man (18915 posts) - - Show Bio

Each week we take a comic book collectible and open it up to see what it looks like outside of the packaging. This week we're going to take a look at a DC Comics character that is shaping up to have a bigger role in the DCU, Phantom Stranger.

MattyCollector has released a figure for the Phantom Stranger as part of their Signature Collection line and this was the February figure for their Club Infinite Earth subscription offer. Unfortunately that means it's already sold out. These figures tend to go quickly as they are released in limited quantities. It originally sold for $20 and they usually end up on eBay for about the same price.

My first question was how would this figure be described? Which version of the Phantom Stranger is this supposed to be?

== TEASER ==

You can see this is the New 52 version since we didn't know much about his past before. It's interesting that they went with him not having an actual name.

These figures can be a mixed bag. They sometimes lack the super-detailed quality that other figures have but the Signature Series features characters that haven't been made into figures before.

At first he looks a little stiff.

These figures do feature a good amount of articulation. You can adjust his arms to make it look like he actually has some sort of a personality.

Even though his origin is closer to the New 52 version, ou can see that they went with an actual medallion that looks more like his pre-New 52 style. It is a little big but adds a little more detailed rather than be a sculpt on the figure.

His cape is a more rubbery material that gives it more shapes and allows it to have a flowing appearance.

Phantom Stranger likes to wear a nice suit. I know the question you're probably asking is, what about his shoes? You can rest assured, he also has a nice pair of shoes.

These figures are good for setting up in different positions. If you have the Constantine figure (that was featured in January), these would go great together. And there is a figure for Pandora coming soon as well (which you can see HERE).

Here's some more shots.

The figure could benefit from a little more detail but having a figure for Phantom Stranger is pretty cool. Even though he has his own series, I didn't think I'd ever see a figure for him.

The Phantom Pimp is more like it.

I think it's only natural they wouldn't actually name him, since it might drive off potential customers.

Have to say the limbs look very stiff.

Toy aside; I just got a subscription to phantom stranger comic. I'm stoked about getting my first issue. I would like to see raven eventually join the comic in a kind of assistant capacity like doctor who and his assistance. Not saying that the raven is only capable of assisting or that the stranger can't support his own comic, but when you put them together, you will get something much greater than on there own individual value. But that's just me saying.
Cool figure though!

First acting like a cross between Rod Serling and the big headed "Watcher" from marvel... It was a while before we saw that he had some kind of mystical powers.

I miss the mask and very flowing cape... he was WAY ahead of Spawn with the growing cape trick.

This is a good look for him, and glad he got his shot in the spotlight.

(Way back in the day... it was cool to know that Spectre, Phantom Stranger, and Deadman seemed to know each other.)

Dr. Fate knew Spectre as a founding member of JLS... and no writer has tried to bring Spectre back into the team.

Or maybe "Kid Spectre" so he can fight "Kid Loki" in a terrible cross-over.

I've been in the market for a Phantom Stranger figure for some time. Looks like I missed the boat on this one.

Dr. Thirteen is playing the semi-assistant role (although against PS's wishes) and I think DC wants to keep Raven in Teen Titans. But PS does confront Raven's family in the most recent issue, so there is room for future conflict there.

It's a good book, I had no experience with the Stranger until I picked up the 0 issue when it came out on a whim and loved it. The art tends to be old-school, which some people hate, but I enjoy it.

whats up with the popeye- esque forarms?

@jinxuandi: thanks for the info:) I saw the cover to PS #2 and I thought it was a grand idea to have both of them in there. But what ever the plans are for both characters, I'm sure that it is going to be greater that anything I can think up.

@dtschemmel: @SoA: @longbowhunter:

Just do a search on eBay. Like there's one about to end in a few hours as I type this. Low bid. MattyCollector sometimes gets figures back in stock. But these usually sell out quickly. They had a limit of 10 so you can image that collector/re-sellers have a bunch. Comic shops might have them if they snatch them up and you'll probably be able to find them at comic conventions.

It turns out there was an old DC Direct version as well I saw on eBay.

From the pictures shown here, this doesn't seem to do the PS justice but you don't come across figures of him very often so I definitely plan to grab one of these.
