Phantom Girl
Phantom Girl is a comic book character that first appeared in Action Comics #276From the planet Bgztl, Phantom Girl is able to phase through solid objects. She is a long-time member of the Legion of Super-Heroes.
Pre-Zero Hour
Tinya Wazzo was born in the 30th century on the extra-dimensional world of Bgztl. While people there were able to pass through walls at will, she was the only one who was able to pass into our world. Upon doing so, she promptly joined the Legion of Super-Heroes.
She and Ultra Boy formed one of the most enduring couples of the Legion. They were only broken up when she apparently died in a shuttle explosion. In reality, she had been hurled back in time where, suffering from serious amnesia, she joined Vril Dox's L.E.G.I.O.N. under the code-name Phase. She was returned to Ultra Boy by the Time Trapper just before the Zero Hour effect erased their universe.
Post- Zero Hour
Tinya was again early to join the Legion, though this time she took the name Apparition. She joined after she helped the Legion foil an assassination plot at a UP conference. Her mother, the Bgztlian ambassador to the UP, was never happy with her daughter's choice, and even less happy that she would fall in love with Ultra Boy, a hero from the slums of Rimbor.
As before, their romance was cut short by Tinya's apparent death - she was killed by the Daxamites in their attack on Earth. Her spirit survived, however, inside the body of her lover. Once she was released, only Jo could see her. This was partially remedied when they were thrown back to the 20th century after a battle with the Emerald Eye of Ekron. Through the use of a Bgztllian touchstone, Tinya gained visibility -- and the knowledge that there was another person just like her: Phase of the L.E.G.I.O.N. It was revealed that Tinya and Phase's father had been a Carggite, a member of Triplicate Girl's race, and that his ability to triplicate himself had passed to her. When she was an infant, however, he took her other two bodies to pay gambling debts. Because she was only half-Carggite, she survived, and never knew the truth. Phase had somehow been thrown into the past, with no knowledge of who she was or where she was from.Upon being re-assimilated with Phase, Tinya gained physicality once more, though the fate of her third body is unknown. Jo and Tinya were married while in the 20th Century.
When they returned to the 30th century, Tinya and Jo resumed their relationship, which still angered Tinya's mother to no end. They were so close that one was rarely seen without the other, and to prove that she could survive without Jo, Tinya took a long mission in deep space. When she returned, she found that the rest of the Legion, including her husband, had been possessed by the Blight.
She was instrumental in helping Jo throw off the Blight's influence, but soon lost him again when he and other Legionnaires vanished into a space-time rift. Prior to Ultra Boy's disappearance, she became pregnant. She delivered the baby on Rimbor, with the assistance and protection of Timber Wolf, a leader of one of Rimbor's gangs. When the lost Legionnaires returned to Earth, so did she, bringing their son, named Cub, with her.
Her relationship with Jo was strained when she discovered that he'd developed romantic feelings for Saturn Girl while they were away (due in no small part to Saturn Girl's use of her telepathy to make Jo believe that Tinya had been lost with them), and the fact the she and Cub were guarded by Timber Wolf almost constantly. Timber Wolf's being from a gang that was rival to Jo's didn't help.
Current Continuity
Tinya Wazzo is once again using the Phantom Girl name, but her history is slightly different. Bgtzl is a world that is slightly out of phase with this one. She is able to pass back and forth between these worlds at will, but can often be seen in both, regardless of what she might be doing in one. This can lead to strange situations and misunderstandings with her teammates.A friend and teammate, Karate Kid, has shown interest in Tinya as of late. But when he finally gets the courage to profess his feelings to Phantom Girl, he discovers that she is already in a relationship with a boy from her own dimension.
Since then, Karate Kid has seemed to get over these feelings, with the help of Light Lass. Tinya still keeps a very friendly relationship with her former admirer, and they have even been seen on missions together. Recently Phantom Girl has been shown to be helping teammate Brainiac 5 discover the secret behind the mysterious extraterrestial attacks upon a multitude of planets.
Powers
Phantom Girl has the ability to turn intangible, she either exists in or is connected with the extra-dimensional space known as the Phantom Zone . She has demonstrated the ability to phase with split second timing, and is also capable of phasing certain parts of her body selectively. While phased, she is immune to physical harm, can maneuver through solid objects and fly under her own power. She is also immune to most energy blasts and radiation, though writers have been inconsistent regarding her vulnerability to attacks utilizing the air. She has additionally demonstrated the ability to disrupt the workings of electronic devices by moving through them while phased.
