Paul Pope

Paul Pope is a comic book creator

American comic book artist and writer

Paul Pope was born under the sign of Libra in on September 25, 1970 in Philadelphia. From there, his family moved around between Columbus, Ohio, San Francisco and Toronto, and before settling in Bowling Green, Ohio, where Paul grew up. He now lives in New York City.

His career began in 1995 when he started working for the japanese publisher, Kodansha, writing and drawing Supertrouble. It was during this period that he also developed his THB scenario. A constant theme in Paul's work is the exploration of the torrid underbelly of youth culture in an artistic style influenced by the likes of Jack Kirby, Alex Toth, Hugo Pratt, Daniel Torres, Vittorio Giardino and Herge. These influences are actually listed in his P-City Parade. Some of Pope's other works include One-Trick Ripoff from Dark Horse and 100% and Heavy Liquid, published under the Vertigo imprint.

Pope received an Eisner Award in 2006 for Best Short Story, "Teenage Sidekick", published by DC in Solo #3. He won two additional Eisners in 2007 for Best Writer/Artist and Best Limited Series, for his mini-series, Batman: Year 100. Discussing the story, set in 2039, one hundred years after the first appearance of Batman, Pope said: “I wanted to present a new take on Batman, who is without a doubt a mythic figure in our pop-psyche. My Batman is not only totally science fiction, he's also a very physical superhero: he bleeds, he sweats, he eats. He's someone born into an over-arching police state; someone with the body of David Beckham, the brain of Tesla, and the wealth of Howard Hughes.”

In June 2007, Pope's first art book Pulphope: The Art of Paul Pope was published by AdHouse Books. Besides comics, Pope worked with Italian clothing company, Diesel, on store installations during their fall fashion week, and a screen-print series based on their “” campaign. In the fall of 2008, Pope partnered with DKNY creating the DKNY: 2089 Collection.

Starting in July of 2009, Paul has been a weekly contributor to DC's Wednesday Comics, writing and drawing the Strange Adventures feature. And in September 2009, he did the cover and one of the stories in Marvel's Strange Tales #1, the first in a 3-issue anthology series.
