A century ago, two young boys grow up together. One is wealthy, one is destitute. One will be a mutant. This is it! Wolverine's origins are finally revealed!

The newly orphaned Rose, a twelve-year-old village girl, is taken in by John Howlett giving her a place to live and providing his sickly son a companion. The Howlett’s mansion is extravagant, but is marked with tragedy. John’s father, a self-made millionaire, despises his son’s soft treatment of the help. John’s wife, Elizabeth, lives upstairs, secluded from the rest of the family. She apparently struggles with mental illness.

Rose soon becomes a close friend with James, and even encounters "Dog" Logan, the son of Thomas Logan who is as much of a classist as John’s father and resents John’s kindness to him and his son. During the season of summer, Rose, James, and Dog all be come great friends, and Dog even saves Logan from drowning. When the adults find out, John senior tells Thomas that he should punish his son. At home, Thomas gets drunk and beats his boy.

Rose and James are in the maze when Dog shows up only to run away. On Christmas, James gets a puppy, Rose gets a dress similar to her mother's gifts, and John gives Dog and toy train, which makes old man John really mad. Dog returns home only to get beat again.
