Creation
Onslaught was a sentient psionic entity created from the consciousness of two mutants: Professor Charles Xavier, the telepathic founder of the X-Men, and the mutant known as Magneto, Master of Magnetism. During a battle between the X-Men and Magneto's Acolytes, Magneto extracted the Adamantium from the skeleton of Wolverine. Upon seeing this, a very angry Xavier used his telepathic powers to shut down Magneto's mind, rendering him catatonic. During the psionic contact, Magneto's anger, grief and lust for vengeance entered Xavier's consciousness. That and with every long-suppressed negative feeling Xavier had endured during the last 30 years. This aggregation resulted in the being known as Onslaught.
Origin
Magneto’s psyche would help Xavier’s psyche and they eventually became a being that is made of psionic energy. Eventually he would make his first full appearance in X-Men vol.2 issue 53. He had an appearance similar to Magneto but was larger (This was noticed by Wolverine when Onslaught claimed to be Charles Xavier. Wolverine remarked that he looked more like Magneto, with the helmet, build, and color scheme. These statements made Onslaught very angry, and he then released a huge amount of energy, destroying the room they were all in.). He then proceeded to kidnap Jean Grey and took her to the astral plane. He tried to convince her to join him and his cause but without revealing that he was part of Xavier’s subconscious. Onslaught then tries to show Jean Xavier’s repressed frustration on his love for Jean. As a result he attacks Jean and burns his name psionically on Jean’s forehead, which only Jean can see. Onslaught then throws Jean out of the astral plane. Jean and the X-Men later meet up with Juggernaut who asked Jean to search through his mind telepathically to find out who Onslaught was. She took him down into a telepathic proof room where they could sit and talk. Jean placed her hands on Juggernaut's head, and proceeded to look for information, when she discovered that Onslaught knew where they were at. However, Juggernaut ran, and once in the hallway, found himself in a maze of stairs, and found only a door in which to escape. He ran through the door, only to find a massive Onslaught on the other side. Onslaught tore the Gem of Cyttorak from Juggernaut's impenetrable body, and he would soon be kidnapped by Onslaught. Later, back in Xavier's body, Onslaught called the X-Men into his study. He claimed that he wanted to destroy the human race to leave the mutants supreme. Jean, distressed at what Xavier was saying walked around the room, and saw the Gem of Cyttorak on the table, and inside was Juggernaut. Onslaught then proceeded in battling the X-Men and destroyed most of the school. When Bishop came from the future to warn the X-Men of a traitor within, this proved that Gambit was not the traitor that Bishop claimed. It was actually part of Xavier that was the traitor. Onslaught continued his plans to try and destroy all humanity. Meanwhile, Wolverine and Elektra were able to figure out that Onslaught was in fact Xavier and Magneto.
The Avengers would come to aid the X-Men and they all gathered at the X-Mansion. They would then decide to have most of the heroes go to the Fantastic Four’s headquarters and help them prevent Onslaught from kidnapping Franklin Richards. Onslaught had created a holographic child named Charles, and was Franklin's new best friend. He lead Franklin to Onslaught, where he absorbed the boy, gaining his powers. Meanwhile X-Force and Jean stayed behind at the X-Mansion and eventually were captured by Mr. Sinister. Sinister tried to convince Nate Grey to join him, but Nate was eventually captured by Onslaught. Onslaught then proceeded to fighting all the heroes including the Avengers, Fantastic Four, X-Men and a few extras such as Cable. During the battle Thor was able to separate Xavier from Onslaught, however, Onslaught claims that he is now “free” from Xavier’s influence and will now do whatever he wants. He then decides to proceed with the plan of enslaving all humanity including mutants. Onslaught held himself inside his fortress, and put up a giant mental shield over it. Several attempts were made to break it, but only one succeeded. Vision went inside of Rogue, and they together were strong enough to break the shield, only to find Onslaught waiting on the other side. He knocked Rogue aside, hurting both her and the vision in the process, and began battling. Hulk walked over to Jean, and asked her to shut out Banner's influence on him. She entered his mind, and shut off Banner. Hulk became savage and insanely strong. He attacked Onslaught. They battled, and it could be heard in the city near by. Onslaught eventually pinned down Hulk, and Hulk became very angry. He punched Onslaught hard enough to destroy his psionic armor. The explosion caused Banner and Hulk to separate into two different bodies. However, this was another piece of Onslaughts plan, fully releasing him and he used his now unrestrained powers to create a second sun to destroy the Earth. Onslaught was now a pure psychic being and could not be hurt physically as he had no physical body to hurt. The assembled heroes decided that they would all merge their bodies into Onslaughts psychic energy and have the mutants kill him with their full powers. They decided not to use any mutants to merge into Onslaught because Onslaught could just absorb the mutant’s energy. The Avengers, Fantastic Four, Bruce Banner, and Doctor Doom have seemed to have died sacrificing themselves to destroy Onslaught. However, Franklin Richards was able to revive all the heroes that died and put them in a pocket dimension.
Onslaught Reborn
After Scarlet Witch used her powers to depower most of Earth's mutants, the powers of Charles Xavier and Magneto collided to reform Onslaught, who's consciousness lingered after his defeat. Onslaught swore revenge on the young Franklin Richards, and any other hero that he despised. He appeared as a large, ugly monster, with a skull face. He first takes control of both the Human Torch, and Mr. Fantastic to try and kill Franklin. He is soon interrupted by Invisible Woman and Thing, who save Franklin. Franklin then runs to Counter-Earth, but Onslaught had followed him. As he appeared in Counter-Earth, he became larger, and gained his Magneto-like mask. He soon encountered the Avengers, and was presumed defeated after he fell into the ocean. Instead of worrying about Onslaught, the Avengers questioned Franklin's credibility, as he claims to be the son of both Mister Fantastic and Invisible Woman. On Counter-Earth, they are not married and do not have children. shortly after this, Thor is assaulted by an Onslaught possessed Hulk, who battled Thor to see who was more powerful. Onslaught switched between the bodies, and ended up as Thor, who struck Hulk with lightning. As Thor was about to strike again, he dropped his hammer, as Onslaught was not worthy. He switched bodies to Hulk, and punched Thor into atmosphere. He then was about to pick up the hammer, when he was assaulted by the Avengers. Captain America had ordered Human Torch and Iron Man to rescue Thor, telling them they had about sixty seconds. They raced to save him, and Johnny took Thor back to the Baxter Building, where Mister Fantastic found that Franklin really was his son. In the battle, Cap orders Hawkeye to go and find Onslaught, and confronts him that he knows that under Hawkeye's costume, is Wolverine. They continue to battle Hulk, while Cap is thrown into a building. Iron Man, from the atmosphere, charges down at Hulk at full speed, regarding that he hopes Bruce would forgive him someday. He punches Hulk, knocking him out. He and Cap then assess their next move, and Onslaught posses Iron Man, and attacks Cap. Then, back at the Avengers Mansion, Rikki Barnes is baby sitting for Franklin, and they are ready to eat breakfast, when Loki, Executioner, Scarlet Witch, Enchantress, and Ultron V surprise them with an offer to help defeat Onslaught. On a balcony, an invisible Ant-Man and Invisible Woman let themselves be know, as Sue refuses to let the villains cause Franklin any harm.
