Welcome To The Heroic Age
Dennis Sykes is just a normal guy who tried to stop a robbery and ended up getting chemical waste dumped down his throat. After being hospitalized he finds out he has cancer, gained temporary superpowers and has one moth to live.
My Thoughts:This is a story that serves as an introduction to Marvel's Heroic Age that began after Siege ended. It's great story of heroism that was pitched by Marvel editor Stephen Wacker. At the end of the first issue there's a one page letter from Wacker explaining how this story was created.
The story is really heartfelt and well executed by the four different writers who worked on the comic. What's also great about it is how it's such a realistic story in the sense that cancer is an everyday threat millions of people face around the world. You can pick this comic up and jump right into the story and enjoy it without having to have read anything prior to this. It's a great stand alone story that all comic fans can truly appreciate.
The story boils around the question; what would you do if you had one month to live? The main character finds out he has cancer and has around one month to live and has to decide how he'll spend that time. He becomes a superhero to not only humanity, but more importantly his wife and niece. He doesn't waste a single moment of the time he has left. Rick Remender did the best job writing. He scripted two issues which were two of the strongest issues of the five. He touched issues on a personal level that are really emotional and heartfelt. You can feel and sense the tone from the dialogue and well drawn artwork at the flip of every page.
The art is by a total of six different artists. Each issue has a different art team. Overall the quality is pretty stellar. There was one issue I wasn't quite find of the artwork, but with the strength of the story being so powerful, it really didn't bother me much. Koi Turnball and Shawn Moll stand out in issue two with their exceptional work. The covers by Michael Del Mundo are some of the most unique and well designed covers I've seen in comics.
This was a great comic I'd recommend to all comic readers. It was a nice introduction the Heroic Age where real heroism returns after years of a Dark Reign through the Marvel Universe. It's a nice story showing how an ordinary man can become extraordinary.
