The cast of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 continues to grow! According to The Hollywood Reporter, we'll see Norman Osborn in the webhead's sequel and he'll be played by Chris Cooper (American Beauty, The Muppets).

As you might recall, Norman Osborn is dying in the first film and he's desperately searching for a cure. Whether or not said "cure" will turn him into the Green Goblin in this movie has yet to be confirmed. The website says, "It is unclear whether Cooper will make his villainous turn in this film or in a sequel. Osborn starts out as a mentor to the superhero before turning bad."

Personally, I was rooting for Tommy Lee Jones. Viners, do you think Cooper's a good choice for the classic villain? I really hope his transformation is saved for the third film because this one is already packed with characters (Rhino, Electro, MJ, Harry!).

The Amazing Spider-Man is scheduled to come out May 2, 2014.

I like Chris Cooper in things. I could see him being quite menacing as Norman Osborn.

I can see this working, but not the Rhino thing, he better be cgi. Also the actor to play as the Rhino,he's not right for the role.

I'm down, Chris Cooper is a great actor, as long as he's just Norman Osborn...Green Goblin now would be too soon.

They'd better go all scooby-doo with this and make Green Goblin seem like an actual goblin. No more power rangers villains in muh spidey films plz.

Leave the Green Goblin side out of this please, we've seen it before.

Right?! Mike Deodato Jr. made him look just like TLJ in THUNDERBOLTS.

He looks a tid bit weathered

Yawn. Retreading the same villians is boring enough especially in a rebooted set of movies. Lets all hop on the hamster wheel and watch the same things again and again and aga...

For those saying they're tired of seeing the same thing, just remember what we could be getting on the big screen. An adaption of "The Night Gwen Stacy Died" would be a testament to arguably the quintessential Spider-Man story ever. What's not to like about that?

I hope this film's Green Goblin will be a bit better than the last franchise's.

#16 Posted by ravisher (722 posts) - - Show Bio

lets hope not , too many villians in 1 movies

Sounds pretty decent thus far. How long before we get the Sinister Six?

Chris Cooper as Norman Osborn seems oddly fitting.

I think this actor could be really fitting and good as Norman, I just don't know if he could pull off the evil part of the role, I mean I'm sure he'll do it good, but all I'll see is the Muppets.

I had a feeling we would see Green Goblin in the next movie

#22 Posted by Omega Ray Jay (8361 posts) - - Show Bio

He's a good actor but I'm not convinced

#23 Posted by SoA (5798 posts) - - Show Bio

@ccraft: like many of the marvel films after 2000 , they take some references from the ultimate universe so the rhino in this film should look like :

Ultimate Rhino

its a little dude inside a giant power suit , so giamatti makes sense.

#24 Posted by SoA (5798 posts) - - Show Bio

chris cooper has the mannerisms and pitch for osborn , i wonder if they are going to do the hair for this one lol

#25 Posted by danhimself (21320 posts) - - Show Bio

so I'm the only one who saw this and thought "man that guy is old"?

#26 Posted by MrMazz (1752 posts) - - Show Bio

Chris Cooper is an underated actor he could be pretty good

#27 Posted by Alcamin (122 posts) - - Show Bio

I can certainly see Cooper pulling off the Norman Osborn role, though I am getting a little worried about the growing villain list for this movie. Electro, Rhino AND the Green Goblin? Can we please avoid another Spider-Man 3 fiasco, Marc Webb? That would be great.

#28 Posted by JamDamage (1195 posts) - - Show Bio

Chris Cooper is an awsome actor, and he could do Gobby, but he is a little to old. I'm sure he'll be good, but still.

#29 Posted by thenexusrebound (264 posts) - - Show Bio

I think Cooper works perfectly. He can give a good guy to the public look, while playing a darker character when no one is looking. He seems charming someone who couldn't be bad. I doubt he will be Goblin though in the film. If anything it is at the end of the movie setting up for the next.

so are we getting a sinister six? osborn, rhino and electro are in this and they could always bring back the lizard so that would be 4. just need two more

#32 Posted by ptigrusmagus (496 posts) - - Show Bio

Liked him in The Town and The Patriot.

#33 Posted by Equonox (1019 posts) - - Show Bio

I'm definitely sensing a sinister six.

@Perfect 10: well, we are pretty sure it was Chameleon in the post-credits scene in the original, and that twitter pic a while back hinted that Venom may also be making an appearance (tho some rumors say Harry will be Venom), so that could be 2 right there. Doc Ock is also highly likely IMO, given his popularity as well as the "animal" character theme

"This just in! The Amazing Spider-Man 2 to be longest modern movie running 8 hours!" lol

I don't know, this all sounds pretty crammed, but so did Avengers with all those heroes. I'm not saying Mark Webb is Joss Whedon, merely showing that many actors don't necessarily mean a crowded SP3 movie. At least, I really hope not.

What I'm hoping all this means is that Webb is crafting a larger universe and signing these great actors on for more than merely on movie. That way they can play a background role here and gain a foundation in the world before becoming a villain later.

For instance, Norman Osborn being introduced and transformed into the Goblin in one movie was done in Raimi's first and it worked. But imagine what a different affect that transformation would have on the audience if the Norman character had been around for one (maybe two) movies without being the Goblin before he transformed. Our investment in the character would be more longstanding and the enemy would have greater potency and menace!

Don't forget Felicity Jones is cast too...And they wouldnt waste Felicity as a cameo role

#36 Posted by Mega_spidey01 (3080 posts) - - Show Bio

chris cooper is a great actor and green goblin is one of favorite spidey villians.

#37 Posted by Mycroftian (106 posts) - - Show Bio

I'm amazed that there are people saying they don't want Norman because he was in the Raimi movies. He was the villain of one movie that came out more than ten years before this one! There's definitely a lot more to be done with him, considering he's probably Spidey's best vilain (discounting JJJ, who, though not a supervillain, still serves as an amazing foil) and the first Raimi movie didn't delve as much into Peter and Norman's relationship as it could have, and also killed Norman before he could do anything really interesting. Norman is pretty integral to the Spidey mythos, especially if you follow the Ultimate interpretation, and though they might be able to get away without using him if they really tried, a solid take on the Goblin can never hurt a Spider-Man franchise. We're also getting a couple other villains on the big screen for the first time anyway, so it's not like the next movie's going to be all reruns in any case.

Looking forward to the next movie, anywho. Seems like a solid casting choice.

I think we'll see Goblin in the third film. This feels like Norman pulling the strings by using Electro and later the Rhino. Gwen should be fine until the trilogy's third act, about middle of the film.

#39 Posted by Necrotic_Lycanthrope (2501 posts) - - Show Bio

Sorry to be a negative Nancy, but the more I hear about the ever expanding character list, the more I want to smash my face into a barber shop pole. All the complaining over how Raimi ruined things with the villains 3 in his last Marvel flick, and yet I barely see any if that for this one, which is possibly going to skew continuity worse than the Topher Venom fiasco. So no, I'm not happy for slapping Goblin into an already shoved full sequel. I'm not happy with a Giamatti Rhino (anybody else think of the color blue when seeing his picture?)and I'm really not caring for a Foxx Electro. Shocker is a much better replacement IMO. So I'm not exactly happy about this. Then again I was proven wrong with First Class, so there's always the possibility it's neat. But after the wreckage called The Lizard, I don't trust Marc Webb with a 10 foot Ock tentacle.

Chris Cooper is a really good actor. I have his enjoyed the movies that he has been in. I would have really liked Willem Dafoe to play Osborn though.

#43 Posted by BlueLantern1995 (3222 posts) - - Show Bio

If anyone can do Green Goblin its Chris Cooper. I have faith that he will be awesome.

#44 Posted by RedHush1 (161 posts) - - Show Bio

He is an amazing actor. I'm sure he could pull the part. My personal opinion is there going to hint towards him turning at the end of the second film then in the Third it'll be based around The Death Of Gwen Stacy storyline. Personally I only see Amazing Spider-Man as a three part movie franchise but I doubt it. I bet they'll drag it out. Same thing I hoped for Spider-Man because I don't want to see great films such as this one and Iron Man turn into six part movies thats start to lose my and others interest.

#45 Posted by DeVianThaI (24 posts) - - Show Bio

Can't wait, hopefully they just hint at the goblin and venom in this movie......two villains is enough for now.

#46 Posted by BritishMonkey (355 posts) - - Show Bio

Not bad. He'll do really good.

So it looks like it might end with Norman turning into the Green Goblin and then ASM3 would be Gobby finding out who Spidey is and then taunting Peter about it until evidently kidnappying Gwen, to the golden gate bridge and we all know what happens there.

#47 Posted by nappystr8 (1345 posts) - - Show Bio

We all knew Norman would be in this movie. Only time will tell though if he will be the Green Goblin or not. If GG is indeed in it, then it's definitely a Sinister Six film.

While Cooper is not a bad choice, I think Colm Feore who is also been cast in the film would have been a vastly better choice, by physicality and age. For that matter, Cooper would make a much better J. Jonah Jameson, the role that at this point is likely that Feore will be playing.

Tommy Lee Jones did make a good Osborn for the Dark Avengers/New Avengers, but that was only one artist's interpretation (Deodato), and nothing about the character prior to that point ever made me think Jones would be a good choice. And besides, he is WAAAAAY too old at this point to play the character.

#48 Posted by powerhouse1122 (94 posts) - - Show Bio

I agree, tommy lee jones would be great for the character.... Man too bad he aint gonna b Gb.

#50 Posted by GothamRed (2615 posts) - - Show Bio

Anyone else feel that this script has too many characters. You don't want to have happen in this what happen in X-Men Origins. Cause of of right now this movie is introducing Harry, MJ, Electro, Possibly Rhino, Norman Osborn with semi possible goblin action from either harry or norman (or neither it's unclear), and two other yet to be disclosed roles of some importance, all with Peter, Gwen, Aunt May, Uncle Ben and Peter's parents playing a part. And what of the mystery man from the last movie who wasn't osborn? Are we done announcing new actors now or are we shooting to make sure every member of Spidey's cast appears in this sequel?

Don't get me wrong I have nothing against Chris Cooper playing him but it's starting to feel really cramped in this script.
