It depends how much danger he's in. If he can kill the enemy and escape, he'll throw it at them, but if he can't get away or he's on a secret mission, he'll just blow himself up too.

In one issue of Sgt. Fury And His Howling Commandos, Sgt. Nick Fury had to get rid of a live hand grenade thrown at his Howlers, but he was not fast enough to prevent the grenade, when it exploded, from blasting a small fragment of shrapnel into his left eye clear to the optic nerve. An operation that could have saved his eye would have kept him out of action for a whole year, and he insisted that the Howlers needed him. Without the operation, the doctors did the best they could. His eye healed, but in the year 1964, he lost its vision. He has worn a cosmetic black eye-patch over his now useless left eye since then.

actually he has a wondering eye and its hard to look tough when people dont know which eye to look at
