What's going on with the X-Men?

'X-Men: Legacy' #228
Written by: Mike Carey
Art by: Daniel Acuña

In the "Devil At The Crossroads" part 2 of 4 we are taken in a completely new direction with the X-Men and unfortunately, the only thing I could really think about was the bigger picture; why Emplate? Why now? Seeing Emplate in all his gory glory is pretty awesome. He is a villain we have not seen since Gen-X, and he has proven in the past to be an adversary to be reckoned with. However, it does seem somewhat random. While I personally feet that the story is moving in a direction I do not really understand, I trust Mike Carey and I feel he is one of the most underrated X-Men writers in that he really understands these characters. He writes their dialogue very well. If you are like me and you missed the first part of this four part series, you have nothing to worry about. The brief introduction is clear and concise enough to bring a new reader (such as myself) up to speed with a good understanding of what is going on in the present.

Overall, the book was really well written, and the art certainly compliments the story. The main issue I had with the book was, why now? It seems so completely random to have a villain like 'Emplate' to come virtually out of the woodwork now after 'Exodus.' Should the 'X-Men' take a few moments to regroup a bit after getting completely thrown out of the United States? Do you think that the story flows well? Are you enjoying it? 2.5 out of 5

I love the gothic kinda steampunk look of Emplate's lair. I think it really fits his personality, the peepshow machine being how he spies on the X-Men? Good times. I just hope that maybe we'll finally get some more background on Emplate and how he went from Marius St. Croix to what he is now. How his family is connected to Gateway and maybe a cameo by Nicole, Claudette and Monet or at least a Gen X reunion....here's hoping.

@uncanny89: Trance's name is actually Hope Abbott. Kind of like Cyclops is Scott Summers and Wolverine is Logan.

I'm thinking that this is setting up the return of GENERATION X.

Hmm Emplate huh? Does seem really random...
I'm with you Babs, why now?
Doesn't seem to fit with any of these other storylines going on or upcoming ones in the mutant books. Imo there is just too much going on with them and its too busy. Necrosha, Nation X, Cable and Hope's Return...it's getting cluttered on that island already.
Kinda turns me off to the X-titles...except X-Factor. Love Peter David!

I have a problem with Emplate being in a book without Monet. Surely she'd like to know that her brother is terrorizing people again. But i did find some adoration for Bling, cool chick.

Hated the coloring on the art.

I read an interview with Mike Carey a few weeks ago and he stated he wanted to pit Emplate and Rogue against each other because they are dark reflections of each other.

As to "why now" he stated he wanted to have a creepy villain pop in on Utopia. Seems like he wanted a Generation X character to dig up and Emplate fit well.

Having said that I'm not thrilled with it but it seems like issue #230 is going to be good so I'm willing to be patient.

 C'mon, people.

Isn't Emplate being used because he eventually starts infecting others and swarms of Emplates are a threat in Bishop's timeline (They kill his sister)?

Carey is planting the seeds for the Messiah trilogy's end.  Duane Swierczynski said there's a good chance "Bishop was right" and Emplate looks to be a part of it.

I believe she might of been thinking you were talking about Hope Summers, the mutant messiah.

Wow, I think that is the most harsh rating I think I have seen you give. I actually liked the way Mike Carey wrong during the whole X-Men: Supernovas and Blinded by the Light story lines. He did a good job on making that tension with Mystique and Iceman feel really interesting.

Sorry to hear about the frog, but I'm pleased to hear you are feeling some what better, by the way. Feel better.

Good point!

@FoxxFireArt:
Thanks :) I don't know, I've given lower ratings before. I loove Carey's writing, so it isn't the writing, it's the direction of the book. It's just lost on me.

don't we have 1,000 more years until that happens?

I have watched this review several times and I have to say my favorite part is when the word "yummy" scrolls by. . . . so true

@pixelized:  It has to start somewhere.

And my only gripe with this issue is how blatantly Emplate's digs ripoff  Prometheus's crooked house .

2,5 is a bit harsh, even if you might not like the direction the book is going, based on the quality of the artwork and storytelling, this book deserves higher than that.

I love the idea of pitting rogue and emplate against each other. Legacy has always been a rogue-centric x-book, so this makes perfect sense.
Come on, Legacy is not the X-book to go to if you want to check on Utopia and the conflict with Osborn, for that you'd have to read Uncanny.

@ babs Maybe you had the wrong expectations of Legacy? It's the guts to delve into X-continuity and explore certain characters and concepts outside the main storylines and weaving them cleverly into what's relevant for the X-men now that makes Legacy such a bold and interesting book.

@Sunrise: Touche! I guess I really don't like the direction. It was, in my opinion, not essential to the books I feel are really worth reading. Great characters, great writing, great art, but so far I am not impressed with the story-line. Could it be there are far too many X-Men titles? Carey does a better job with these characters than Fraction in my opinion.

@Babs:  Good review as always despite the sore throat I hope that gets better but I like Emplate & his little midget friend DOA so that should be good to see what they do with those characters.

Dear Babs,

I have always enjoyed your reviews but I was very disappointed this time. I tough that actually interesting to have a story not connected to Dark Reign.

But let's not dwell on that. I have a question: Did Emplate take Bling! because she has a regenerating bone-marrow or was that random?
