Witchblade #125 Review/Preview

125th Landmark Anniversary Issue.

I've mentioned before that I'm a fan of Witchblade.  Especially with Marz and Sejic on board.  Things look like they're about to get crazy with Sara's recent disappointment with Dani.  What Sara did for Dani did seem a little out of place and I could see why she'd be pissed.  I am surprised that it's going to result in this "War."

This is the "Landmark" 125th anniversary issue.  Maybe with "War Of The Witchblades" looming, I was prepared for some really kick ass action.  Unfortunately, it didn't really happen...yet.  The seeds are being planted.  I understand we can't have a full blown, knock down fight in the first part.  Reading it a second time, I started seeing different plot twists that may be on the horizon.

Sara visits her sister Julie again.  Dani may be on the verge of another change in her life.  Gleason tries taking things furter as well.  And let's not forget about the Angelus Warriors and Curator as well.  There's so many things that can and will happen.

I've always enjoyed when Marz writes the "talking" dialogue scenes.  It helps to define the characters in a realistic way.  The conversations between Sara and Julie and between Dani and Finch makes us see them as more than just characters on a piece of paper.  My only problem with this issue is we had more of that than we did fighting.  I'm sure the action coming won't disappoint.  This is a good issue to jump onto if you haven't been reading.  Summaries are usually given in the beginning to remind you what's been going on.  This issue gets a 4 out of 5 from me.  Marz's dialogue is good.  I feel like Dani once again feels like she's either becoming cliche or simply isn't too bright about certain things.  Sejic's art is phenominal as usual.  The backup story written by Rob Levin and drawn by Marco Castiello serves to further add seeds to events that are to come.

Here's the preview.  In stores March 18, 2009.  Lots of covers to choose from:

One of the longest-running series in comics reaches a milestone: 125 issues and still going strong! There’s no better way to mark this occasion than with the start of the biggest Witchblade story arc ever!

For more than a year now, the Witchblade has been split between two bearers—NYPD Detective Sara Pezzini and dancer Danielle Baptiste—and they have coexisted peacefully. But that’s all about to end.

Beginning in this issue, the six-part “War of the Witchblades” arc will change Sara, Dani and the Witchblade forever. Sara has been Dani’s friend and mentor, but now she becomes her bitter enemy. By the end of the storyline, only ONE bearer will remain.

The critically acclaimed team of writer Ron Marz and artist Stjepan Sejic is joined by cover artist Chris Bachalo (Uncanny X-Men, Amazing Spider-Man), who contributes a two-part cover of Sara and Dani.
