Will 'The Walking Dead' Still Be Good Without Frank Darabont?

Darabont wrote, produced and directed the successful AMC show, so will it be the same without him?

If you watched 'The Walking Dead' last season and were among the masses that felt it was one of the greatest pieces of television ever, then you were probably as shocked as we were when news broke that 'The Walking Dead' director Frank Darabont would not be returning to the show. This was especially shocking in light of the fact that Darabont had just finished promoting 'The Walking Dead's' upcoming season at San Diego Comic-Con. But this wasn't a case of "irreconcilable differences," between Darabont and the heads of AMC. Oh, no. At least that's certainly not what it seemed.

The executive producer's departure was sudden, and was explained to the cast members by AMC's VP of scripted programming, Ben Davis, who pulled cast members aside individually to let them know that Darabont was out. According to a report, cast members were not only shocked by the news of Darabont's departure, they also feared for their own future.

One insider says those gathered were stunned at "the duplicity of AMC" for having used Darabont to promote the show at Comic-Con before firing him. And they were angry about the lack of explanation; they were simply told, cryptically, "This isn't working." Above all, they were disheartened. "It's a crushing blow," says the insider. "Even when you have a hit, they can still destroy you."

Cast members quickly realized how vulnerable they were -- not even the success of the show's first season would be able to safeguard members of the cast and crew from being let go. And who wants to go into work to find out they are unemployed? The shocking thing about Darabont's departure from 'Th Walking Dead' goes beyond the fact that he was actively promoting the series' second season at Comic-Con. Darabont was not only 'The Walking Dead's' director and executive producer, he also wrote the majority of the show, letting go of all of last season's writing staff.

This reveal was especially shocking considering 'The Walking Dead' happens to be AMC's biggest show, period. Additionally, AMC planned to cut funding for the show by approximately $650,000. So with a smaller budget, and without Darabont's vision of what the 'Walking Dead' is all about, should fans be concerned that this season may not fare as well as it's predecessor? And is this really a smart move for AMC's most successful show, which beats Mad Men and Breaking Bad by approximately 2 million viewers?

The recent cuts from the show may have something to do with AMC's split from Cablevision, but the question remains, why fix something that isn't broken? Be careful AMC, you should never bite the hand that feeds you. Especially when zombies are involved.

I hope so, it is my favorite comic and I loved the show. God it is a good comic. Well, on going comic at least. Watchmen is my favorite over all. Y the Last Man was also great. I could go on... Anyway I love the Walking Dead and I really hope the show is ok. (Even though it probably won't be)

As long as Kirkman still has some say in it I have faith

Bad form AMC!
I hope the season ratings tank and they learn a lesson for treating talent like Darabont as expendable.

I am sure he will make sure they don't leave his vision and keep them on track.

I thought Kirkman's episode on the first season was really ham-fisted. I think Daranbot leaving may severely hurt the show, mostly because he was excited to implement more of the comic's elements to the screen. That first episode was cinematic perfection but all the derivations that took place from the second episode on were mediocre. I'm sure him leaving had a lot more to do with creative differences than is publicly being let on, which leaves me a bit worrysome.

Would not be surprised if this show bombs, and you know what?  If AMC loses big because of this change then it just shows to you how the television companies care nothing for the masses and are so out of tune with what we want.  You just simply do not mess with the plan of having somebody who helped make your show a hit by taking them out of the equation.  Its just like during that whole period of unrest regarding whether or not Peter Jackson would be directing The Hobbit.  Success is where you find it, and firing Frank Darabont could very well spell disaster.  We shall see come October though.  Let's just hope I'm wrong and that the show still does well.

I hope AMC isn't getting cocky now. With Mad Men, Breaking Bad, and now Walking Dead they have some of the best shows on cable. I'll still watch though, zombies are awesome.

The Mist is probably one of my favorite movies in the last ten years and I don't have to mention Shawshank or The Green Mile. When I heard Darabont was tackling my favorite horror genre it created a tremendous personal stir. The anticipation leading up to the first show was almost unbearable, I would hype the show to anyone and everyone I crossed paths with. When the premiere finally came it was treated in my house like event worthy of popcorn, lights out, and my six closest friends quietly gathered around the television. I was whelmed afterwards and consolidated myself with doses of Mad Men, Breaking Bad, The Wire, Generation Kill, and Deadwood. In contrast, I had never really heard of Game of Thrones before the first episode. I didn't spend countless hours researching the production, cast members, or entered any contests for a shot at being an extra on the set. I watched it alone on my computer monitor, sitting upright in my chair from Office Depot. But that fucking show moved me unlike anything I can remember. I was instantly addicted and the hunger grew more intense each week. It seems ridiculous now to try and think of The Walking Dead in that way.

AMC  saying it wasn't working out is pretty shady and now hearing about the budget cut I don't have a lot of faith in it any more, horrible move.

Well his episodes where the ones that were actually good. So it'll get worse i recon, the portrayal of the woman is truly pathetic though, and the episodes between the first and the last were just filler. So it will get worse without him, not that it was great with him.

I hope so.

Amc is beyond ignorant when it comes to knowing how to run their shows. still relatively new to the game, they produce massive hits that years ago you could only find on the movie stations. even with a chunk of the hour being dedicated to commercials they are gold mines. and what do they do? cut costs left and right. yeah, it's business. i am very aware of the whole tactic, but you can't argue with results. i don't understand how they choose to argue with results. i do not watch Mad Men but hear enough good things to see that their argument was very stupid. i absolutely love Breaking Bad, and hearing that they're trying to cut the episodes down for a last season by half and that the show may be shopped around is downright nauseating. the walking dead proved itself, WITH SIX EPISODES, that it was a huge contender for a genre that's well has really dried up as far as i'm concerned. they struck oil with a show that really can't be compared to any that's on television really right now. and they fire the guy that made it the way it was. kirkman will be consulted, but darabont listened. they got a guy AMC felt fit the role better than darabont, so if they don't like kirkman's idea, it may not go down that way. sorry for the rant but, damn, this channel is run by a bunch of pricks. i really hope the show stays good.

I heard a reason for Darabont's departure may have been one of the writers/creators/head honchos for Mad Men got a big fat multi-million dollar pay raise because of the leverage they have be able to move the show to another network if they are not pleased. AMC doesn't own Mad Men or Breaking Bad for that matter but they DO own The Walking Dead. This may have been Darabont's disgust over the budget cuts given to them they just had to swallow in light of the pay raise for AMC's more award winning and classy show. I wouldn't be surprised if this was a huge sticking point with Darabont. I still have faith this will be a solid season. On an optimistic note, it has never been neither confirmed nor denied if Darabont would still have any sort of creative involvement with the show. He's only stepped down as the show runner.

This really pisses me off. They used the guy then cut him loose. I hope the show fails, just so Darabont gets the last laugh.

I don't see how they could do too much wrong if they follow the source material.
conformist21on Aug. 11, 2011 at 9:02 p.m.
it wasn't that great of a show to begin with, so there's room for improvement
Pizawleon Aug. 11, 2011 at 10:06 p.m.
It'll be better. And F the cast. Half of them better still die off this season, if the Governor line is happening.
