When it was announced that Natalie Portman, an Oscar-nominated actress, was going to play a role in the Thor movie, it felt a little strange.  Sure she did the Star Wars prequels but she's never really done a super hero movie before.  I'm not sure how big of a role she'll have in the movie since she's playing Thor's Earthly love interest.  These days it does seem like most actors really want to get into the superhero movies.  Is that the case with Portman?

In an interview with E! Online, Portman tells why she decided to "hook up" with Thor.

"I just thought it sounded like a really weird idea 'cause Kenneth Branagh's directing it.  I've got to do it."

 It still remains to be seen how big of a role she'll play.  Originally the word was that the majority of the movie would take place on Asgard and Thor would make his way to Earth at the end of the movie.  Will that still be the case?  We know that Idris Elba will be playing Heimdall, the guardian of the "Rainbow Bridge" so perhaps Thor will travel down earlier than original thought.

@Sir Kyle: I guess in some ways.  Don't let Alan Moore hear you call V a superhero comic though.

My question is this... Could we consider Thor will an epic movie for Marvel studios...? The reason I ask is because Spiderman has always been the front runner for Marvel studios, and with the big name stars attached to Thor it sounds like it will give old Spidey a run for his money.

Also could  this have impact on the future casting for the Avengers movie if Thor does well?

@Sir Kyle:
I always thought it was more along the lines of a political allegory, such as Animal Farm. The lesson I saw was that we should never let fear take us over to the degree that we are alright with handing over our freedoms and values. As Patrick Henry said,

" Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery? I know not what course others may take; but as for me, give me liberty or give me death! "

they already relesed the plot line for thor. Thor does something and gets banished to earth. the war in asguard spills over and loki leads his forces to take on earth. So i would say majority of the film at least half of it take place on earth now.

@aouric:
Actually spider-man is Sony studios epic, and most actors who have been signing to Marvels movies, (iron man 2 and Thor) have also signed contracts to apear in the Avengers

But lets be real too...it's got basically a superhero thrown in.

I cannot wait for this.  With Natalie Portman on board I'm confident this movie will deliver on all the goods.  All the casting news I've heard has not disapointed as of yet.  Looking forward to this.

She's a really great actor, and it's such a small role. Natalie Portman should have taken a bigger role, like an actual superhero.

@MysterioMaximus:  I have to agree that V was more a political/ philosophical film than anything else.
Your clumping Superhero and vigilante together because they are both in comics.Your brain is connecting to Batman, who's Vigilanteism has been ruined on a rather intimate level since he joined the JLA. the lone Batman, the one who fought simply to save families from killers, he was a vigilante, based off of a very old idea.
 Vigilantes have been around i literature forever, in the form of the man who hunts down his wife's killer or exposes the corrupt politician. the innocent man who escapes from jail to bring the real culprit to justice.   They are driven more by a personal injustice than a sense of duty (which is kinda what every superhero is driven by). Think Robin Hood. Think Romeo.

V was a comics movie, but much like I AM LEGEND, it was a comics movie that had absolutely nothing to do with superheroes.

Well said, but I don't entirely agree. Point is, at the end of the day, V is a character that's doing heightened to real-world impossible things in a costume, hence there's an association with superheroes no matter how Orwellian, lacking super-abilities or not. It’s like trying to drastically make Nazi’s and bigots different. At the end of the day, while they're not exactly the same thing and each characters personal motivation and ethical code will be different, ultimately the vigilante and the superhero have more similarities than differences and often-times the same goals, merely different means. I don’t view it belittling when someone associates V for Vendetta with the superhero genre; I view it insultingly when arguably pretentious people, like the always genius but ever laughably grumpy Alan Moore, seem to imply that superhero comics can’t be intellectual, thus it shouldn't be on the same shelf as Batman or Spider-Man. But that’s my opinion...so I def. get that it's not a typical comic book story, nor would I say it is, but I can see common bonds. It's not just some political drama either and I think this mystery man running around killing people with knives in a Guy Fawkes costume clearly shows that. It's like trying to argue fantasy is different from sci-fi or horror, when usually you'll find they tend to blend.

I thought that. If there's some sort of vigilante in a story and the story is based on a graphic novel, then it's classed as a superhero film to me.

I really like "Garden State" but I don't know if you like coming-of-age comedies. I might try "V for Vendetta".
