Update: Michael Bay Signs On To Direct 'Transformers 4'

According to the film's producer, 'Transformers 4' will have Michael Bay on board, may feature new cast.

We hope you haven't had your fill of big budget explosions because according to G.I. Joe: Retaliation producer Lorenzo Di Bonaventura there will in fact be a fourth Transformers film and it is currently slated for a Summer 2014 release. Yes, your dreams of getting more Optimus Prime and Bumble Bee screen time has been granted. Up until just a few hours ago, however, one very important piece of the Transformers pie had been missing and rumors that the trilogy's director may not be returning for the fourth film were circling -- until now. According to the latest report, director Michael Bay will be directing the fourth Transformers film.

In a recent interview during a Hasbro event for G.I. Joe: Retaliation, Di Bonaventura stated that a fourth Transformers film would be headed our way with or without director Michael Bay, but in a release soon afterward it was revealed that the director would indeed be returning to the franchise. The film's director wasn't the only thing being questioned, however. According to the Transformers producer there might be a few more shake-ups being made to the film's cast, too.

Michael had a debate because he sort of felt at first that he'd done three. Michael and I are both the same in that we always like to top ourselves. That doesn't necessarily mean bigger. It can be bigger in places, it just means different, but we're going to push really hard as fresh and new as we can be...[but] Michael's going to direct and it'll be in the summer of 2014...Again, we're going to try to do a hybrid there where there will be some characters that come forward--we think, we're still in the process of figuring it out--and some characters that don't, but it will definitely be a different story.

Based on a report from Deadline, the fourth film in the Transformers franchise will hit theaters on July 29th, 2014, it won't be shot back-to-back with a fifth film and it will also be a complete reboot of the franchise.

Again, it's a hybrid because it's a funny thing. I'm not involved with 'Spider-Man,' but what I perceive 'Spider-Man' to be is just a redoing of the whole thing. ['Transformers 4' is] not. It's an evolution. There's still continuity that's going on, yet there will be a lot of new cast," he said. "Whether there's anybody from the first cast, we don't even know yet. The trust is it's going to be a whole new story. The characters that would certainly come along are Optimus and Bumblebee, I'm sure."

So how about they just get rid of all the humans (that includes you, Shia) and make a Transformers movie featuring nothing but -- wait for it -- alien robots. That sounds like the kind of movie that fans of the original cartoon series definitely wouldn't mind seeing. Who knows? Maybe Di Bonaventura will kill off Shia LeBeouf just like he'll (allegedly) kill Channing Tatum in G.I. Joe: Retaliation. What do you think? If you were in charge of the Transformers franchise, what would you change?
