Todd McFarlane Is Now Writing A Spawn Movie Screenplay

Do people still love Spawn like they used to?

I was a big fan of Todd McFarlane and Spawn.  I started getting bummed when Todd stopped drawing and was just co-writing/plotting the issues (he did have quite the empire).  Then he stopped being actively involved in the comics.  With that, I'm a little ashamed to admit that I pretty much stopped reading just after issue #100 (the volume is currently at #194).  I have picked up the occasional issue over the years but it hasn't been the same.

Yesterday, Todd mentioned, via his Twitter, that he had begun writing the screenplay for the (next) Spawn movie.

MOVIE: I've officially begun writing the SPAWN MOVIE screenplay. The story has been in my head for 7 or 8 years. Will continue to update.

I wonder what people will think of another Spawn movie.  I still think Spawn is a great character but I don't feel he has the same 'fame' that he did when the first movie (and awesome animated series) did.  Todd did mention back in June that he wanted Leonardo DiCaprio as a cop who gets involved in the world of Spawn.

Would you be excited for a Spawn movie?  Would they have to reboot it and ignore the first movie?  Do you think people are interested enough in comic book movies that they'll go see it even if they don't know who Spawn is?

Oh it's going to be a Reboot for sure, everything is a reboot now,  Spawn has loads of potential to be at least ascetically pleasing, The cape was really cool looking in the first movie, IMAGINE what spawn reboot cape will look like, and if they throw Leo in the mix  I will see it for sure.

It seems like McFarlane is just doing this all for the money nowadays, ive been reading the comics since I was four and i have to say, they are past their glory days. i think that if a movie were done like they handled the animated show then it could be pretty cool, but if we just get a repeat of the last live action movie, i dont have high expectations

i love spawn he;s brilliant if the film can match the quality of the animated series and the comics it will be my fav comic film ever for sure. Make sure its better than the last spawn film which was ok at best lol

Spawn...eh...never really been a big fan of his.

I'm like you, G-Man.  I used to love Spawn and stopped reading with #100, too.  I even have the first 2 Spawn animated series discs.  I've kept up with the comic series through Wikipedia and I'm tempted to go back can get everything I missed.  Spawn was one, if not, the top selling title at the time when the series and movie came out.   I probably wouldn't rush out to see the movie.  I would probably wait for it on Netflix.  A reboot wouldn't need to be necessary.  They could just do a flashback in the beginning of the movie.

I thought the first movie was pretty fair for the time. Special Effects now could do a hell of a lot more. It had been such a long time since the first movie came out. I think they would go with a reboot..

Personally i think the movie will cause random people to go see it and then theyll start getting into spawn through the movie. its happened so many times with the spider-man movies and all. and i stopped reading the spawn comics around issue 110 it just doesnt have the same feel as the older issues.and yes i think there gunna just ignore the old movie. but thats just me haha were gunna just have to see what happens.

Sort of have the same fan relationship with Spawn as I did with the Simpsons (which I blame entirely on U2's appearance). Started off loving it, then interest started to sag, then lost that tiny little bit of interest left altogether. In the UK I think we only had issues 1 to 70-something in collected paperbacks so that was another reason for my interest flagging. Looking back at the early issues you can really see how it evolved from a bog-standard superhero story to the dark fantasy it ultimately become. Like Uncanny Kev I sort of monitored the series via Wikipedia and more recently comicvine so was a little surprised to find whiny Al Simmons was no longer Spawn and some new bugger had taken up the mantle. Would a film of Spawn be any good? If done well, like anything, yes. But I doubt it will be that big a commerical hit.

Chapel should be in it.

I hope it doesn't suck.

I might see it when it comes out...if not in theatres then on dvd
MadOmegaManon Aug. 23, 2009 at 10:35 a.m.

They should have either Voilator, Chapel or Overtkill as the villain.
I hope if this film does make a spin-off game then it will be good, because Spawn: Armageddon wasn't that bad.

I've been getting into Image a lot lately so I wouldnt mind seeing it at all. But I have my doubts about McFarlane writing a movie screenplay.

I can't see Leo ever agreeing to do a Spawn movie.

I actually liked the first one and I thought pretty much the whole cast was perfect. Except for Terry Fitzgerald , he should've been played by Mario Van Peebles. The only part I disliked was the effects on how all those Spawns looked, and how they looked the same. Other then that I liked it. I like how they threw in cameos too with Angela , and her Medievel Spawn's stuff as earrings, Sam and Twitch, and the people that were on tv in the beginning of the first Spawn comics.

I've been waiting a spawn movie for a long time whether it be a sequel or a reboot. I still want to see it and still have Michael Jai White as Spawn and John Leguizamo as Clown. No sense in recasting these two guys. I kinda hope they bring in Billy Kincaid,Overtkill and a small cameo flashback of Medievel Spawn in this reboot or whatever he decideds to make it.

And what the hell is up with that new Spawn cartoon series. I've only seen 1 teaser video of it and that was like 2 or 3 years ago now. Is that EVER gonna come out or what?

i heard spawn wont have a speaking part
jefpriceon Aug. 23, 2009 at 12:41 p.m.
I've never really liked Spawn. It's like they took Batman, the Son of Satan and Spiderman and threw them in a blender with Hellblazer. But to be honest I've never been a fan of any of the Image stuf it's all always felt like cheap copies of DC and Marvel to me. Which makes since considering it's origin.

However that being said, a movie done by Tod, who is a great writer, could be very good, and I would check it out.

Most likely no.  Rob Liefeld created and owns Chapel.  That's why they retconned Spawn's origin to have Jessica Priest more involved.  (She has a really really pathetic page by the way.  Can't believe she doesn't have more info.)
