The Boston Globe interviewed Spider-Man himself, Tobey Maguire recently about his upcoming film Brothers, and what do you know? The topic of Spider-Man came up.
Maguire hasn't seemed to gun-ho about reprising the role as Peter Parker, but has never really flat-out said he wasn't doing it:

 “It’s not that I was reluctant,’’ he says. “For me, it’s a big process to decide whether or not to do a role. . . . I have to want to wake up in the morning and feel like I can’t wait to get to work. I’ve got to feel OK about leaving my kids for 12 or 13 hours a day for five months. It’s a big commitment.’’

Many people considered Spider-Man 3 a "not-so-great" film, and that's being nice. Maguire hopes to bring the film back to it's glory of the first two films, and also, deepen the character of Peter Parker.

 “Hopefully I’ll be able to evolve the character in a new direction,’’ he says. “He’ll still be Peter Parker, but I hope I can move him forward a bit and take him to a place where there will be new challenges for me as an actor.’’

Sounds like this film will be back on the serious track, after the events that took place in Spider-Man 3. I guess that means no more dance/musical numbers (sad face). What do you hope to see in this upcoming installment, other than villains? More relationship development? Spidey delivering pizzas? Maybe even Peter revealing he's Spider-Man and dealing with himself in the public eye?

I hope Tobey Maguire does become Spidey again. It's not that I like him that much but I hate it when new people play roles made famous by other people. Like Don Cheadle with War Machine.

I’m just going to say it. And I’ll be bashed, flamed, and pulled through the mud. I don’t care! I have never, ever liked Toby McGuire as Spider-Man. I hate Sam Raimi as the director. I hated what they did to the Green Goblin, Dafoe being probably the greatest possible casting choice, and you cover his arguably far more frightening face in some hokey power rangers mask. In fact, I remember people being literally angry with me when the original film was released and I disliked it. “You’re a Spider-Man fan?” It was so popular, people that wouldn't dare touch a comic book adored it, and I never understood why. I absolutely hate the campy quality that Raimi insists on including in every film he makes. I’ve always found him notoriously overrated. I cannot deny that I do like Spider-Man 2, but I also have to admit it’s only because of Doc Ock. If it wasn’t for Otto, I’d have hated it just as much. And Spider-Man 3…well…should I even bother? Pretty much everyone hates that one.

And he needs to hit the weight room again so he can look like the way he did in the first one. Oh and Tobey no more crying emo crap again that's not evolving the character that's making him annoying.

@MysterioMaximus:  I agree with what you say.  In fact, you've encapsulated all the opinions I have regarding the Spidey franchise, and like you, think that Doc Ock was the best thing to happen to the Spidey movies.  While I like Raimi's other movies, I agree, his insistence on adding his brand of camp detracts quite a bit, and his insistence on using Kirsten Dunst is something I will never, never, ever understand.    I WILL give him another chance as Sony basically forced his hand with #3 but wish he'd focus on the action and one-liners that are Spidey's trademarks, like Danhimself mentions.

The fact McGuire is STILL bitching and moaning about playing Parker despite the fact he's being rewarded rather handsomely for his job PRETENDING to be someone just makes me nauseous.  Dunst has made statements that have been far more detrimental,  yet the skank is still involved.

Guess I will never stop griping about the Spidey movies.  Its because its a character with stories that write themselves, yet somehow, someway, Hollywood has managed--yet again--to s@#t all over what easily is one of the most beloved comic book characters of all time.

@MysterioMaximus:
i agree with you about the how over-rated the first two movies were. i really don't like them much and find them to be kinda cheesy. so no bashing here.

@danhimself: THANK YOU, finally somebody says it. yeah he barely made any little jokes in the movies

I reckon they should make the villains a bit darker. In Spider-Man 2 and 3 Sandman and Doc Ock were a bit too sympathetic.

Here we go, did he not see what happened to Michael Keatons career after he quit batman. These actors don't seem to understand that when they get these kind of roles in these blockbuster series, it gives them the exposure that allows them to cherrypick other roles that their interested in. Studios want to ride the coat tails of the big movie by hiring the stars of them. Case in point, Val Kelmer had a good run in the 80's and early 90's but pretty much fell off the map until Batman Forever came along(not that I think this was a great movie, but a big movie all the same) all the sudden he had roles coming from everywhere and had his pick. So Tobey, If the script is good shut up and but on the tights!!!!

I think they should reboot the franchise.  (:
and use the cast for the Spiderman Musical, it's a great looking cast!

After reading this article. . i think maybe he's regretting as playing as Parker again because of the 3rd film didn't do so well? I mean would you want play that role again after how the reviews went? I don't think it's the actors fault just the director, writers and producers. I think Maguire is still right as Paker. . I mean come on, Peter Parker ain't no pretty boy.

@danhimself: agreed. . .

I actually liked every aspect of the first two Spider-Man films (yes, EVERY ASPECT) so I want him and all other cast members to reprise their roles. F**k everyone's negativity surrounding Spider-Man 3, I didn't think it was even that bad.

 More of Spider-Man cracking one-liners, less Twilight relationship angst.  More Black Cat, less Mary Jane.  More threatening villains, less shaded-in abs.  More Spider-action, less of finding every excuse to pull the mask off just to give Maguire face time.
