Thor and Captain America in IRON MAN 2

But no cliffhangers, according to Jon Favreau.

Ha! Imagine if Cap and Thor were on this POSTER.
Ha! Imagine if Cap and Thor were on this POSTER.

Why must everything Jon Favreau says about making IRON MAN 2 be so entirely spot-on? Last week, he said that fitting multiple villains into a superhero sequel really isn’t a problem as long as you give each one specific plot functions that don’t overlap. Now, he’s telling  the LA Times that, even though IRON MAN 2 is an installment in an entire series, he’s doing his best to keep it self-contained.

So intones Mr. Favreau...

"I want it to be completely self-contained because a lot is going to happen between now and the next chapter. You've got 'Thor,' you've got 'Captain America ' and you've got ' Avengers.' I don't know how all of that is going to impact this little handmade story of ours that we've been doing over the last two films…  You want to leave some things open, you know, to be like a food cache for them to set things up that can be paid off later and lean toward where we think things are going… But we can't leave it like 'Empire' where you're waiting to see it resolved. It's not a cliffhanger. We had to tuck this whole story in. And that be said, we had like eight different storylines going and opened up the door, especially with both the good guys and the bad guys, for a larger story to be told. That's just responsible filmmaking. But if you just watch this movie, it's self-contained. It's not like 'Two Towers.' "

Thank you, Jon. Thank you. One of things that really irked me about a lot of recent mega-blockbusters that are part of mega-series is the lack of closure. Yes, you can touch upon some ideas or characters that you’ll see more of in further installment, but it’s really irritating when the characters practically look at the camera and say, “Don’t worry. We’ll deal with this in the next movie.” It’s even more irritating when a movie ends without resolving its own conflicts. Like he said, it requires discipline to make a modular movie… that is, one that can easily connect to more movies, but still be self-contained.

And according to this rumor from Cinemablend, he’s playing his cards smartly in regards to teasing about Thor and Captain America. Rather than introducing them in the movie itself, he’s apparently saving them for a scene after the credits, the same way he handled Nick Fury’s appearance. Still just a rumor, but if it’s true, it’s another example of the guy’s levelheadedness about all of this.

And for something completely different, here’s one of the international trailers for IRON MAN 2. I WANT to say the narrator is speaking in Mandarin, but it could be Cantonese.  Can any of the international maniacs in the Comic Vine community sort it out for me?

Holy ****

Why can't May 7th come any faster!?

On a sidenote:  I'm not too fond of cliff-hanger endings, but Back to the Future 2 had a good cliff-hanger ending that I actually wasn't disappointed since it was handled well (although part 3 for me was... eh).

Cap and Thor in extra final scene? Hurry Up and show the movie
Pez85on April 15, 2010 at 11:06 a.m.

Am I the only one that sees the humour in the fact that the narrator could be speaking Mandarin

That being said, I'm glad to see that Favreau seems to be pointed in the right direction. I wonder which cameo we'll be getting though(if any)....Cap or Thor?

This is why I love Favreu, he is smart and know what the fans want. Less than a month away.

Just as long as they don't put multiple endings like Wolverine with each ending have a different cameo

Oh man! I might squeel in the theatre like a girl seeing the Jonas Brothers if Capt. and Thor show up...and my friends will have to pretend they don't know me.

I wish Favreau worked on Daredevil instead of just being in it...

I was kinda expecting Fury saying that he has someone for Tony to meet, then show a guy walking up and have him shadowed so all you can see are his waiste and a hammer. Thus thus a prelude to Thor

Maybe instead, they'll have Tony meet Thor like you said, and then Nick says something Like "I Have a job for you two." then they walk up to this big Ice Block and...... Then it continues in THE AVENGERS

I Agree, I knew it had something to do with IM3 or something, it was probably the only reason Tom said it.

I want it to be Thor at the end of the credits. He has to be all the way Thor (helmet, hammer) and Tony having a "holy shit" look on his face as he meets him.
Bruce Vainon April 15, 2010 at 12:49 p.m.

I'm thinking Cap's appearance might be him in a block of ice.
Moomin123on April 15, 2010 at 12:58 p.m.

Awesome. Hopefully Hulk will be there too and then the Avengers team will finally be together.
Mr. Dead Poolon April 15, 2010 at 1:06 p.m.
@Bruce Vain:
Yeah then have him being thawed in The Avengers
Overguardianon April 15, 2010 at 1:10 p.m.
You know, when I read the quotation by Favreau it sounds like he's saying Cap and Thor WON'T be in the movie. He's saying he wants to keep it self-contained.
He's not saying "It's got Thor, it's got Captain America, it's got The Avengers" as in the movie has them, he's saying that you have each of those movies doing its own thing.
I've read it like 5 times and I don't understand how it's inferring that Cap and Thor are in IM2
Bruce Vainon April 15, 2010 at 1:31 p.m.
@Mr. Dead Pool:
Exactly - Plus, I don't think Chris will be physically ready yet.
