This Week's Essential Comics: 01/09/13

Not sure what comics are worth your cash this week? We're here to help!

Every Wednesday, an intimidating list of new comics hits the shelves. The vast majority of us are working with a budget -- a fairly limited one, too. This means narrowing down that gargantuan list of titles can be a hefty chore. Well, luckily for you, Comic Vine has your back. We've taken a look at this Wednesday's new releases and managed to select 6 titles that we believe are well worth your money.

Are you buying the following issues or do you have other issues in your sights?

ACTION COMICS #16

No Caption Provided

"The second death of Superman?" Things are looking bleak for Kal-El as legendary writer Grant Morrison introduces a new villain: Superdoom. According to the solicit, this powerhouse is the "worst foe" the multiverse has seen and it's a demon version of Superman from an alternate universe. Issue #16 will also dive into the Little Man's plan and include a backup story focusing on Superman's battle with the Anti-Superman army.

CLONE #3

No Caption Provided

According to staff writer Mat 'Inferior Ego' Elfring's last review, this is a book you absolutely shouldn't miss. Issue 3 of Image's series will follow Dr. Luke Taylor as he goes deeper into the Government's top secret project. Will it reveal more on his origin... or will he be another victim?

Be sure to visit CBR for the rest of the preview.

STAR WARS #1

No Caption Provided

The force looks strong with this one (sorry, had to). Dark Horse is bringing the classic trilogy (and characters!) back with all new stories by writer Brian Wood and artist Carlos D'Anda. With cover art by Alex Ross, how could you possibly resist picking this one up? It needs to be Wednesday right now so I can have this in my hands.

Check out Dark Horse's preview below.

SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN #1

No Caption Provided

Odds are you fall into any of these 3 categories when it comes to SUPERIOR: super excited, curious to see how it'll unfold, or you think Dan Slott has crushed your childhood like an ant under a boot. If the latter, take a deep breath because we all know Peter Parker will be back one day.

As for me? I'm fairly pumped to check out this issue and see what Slott has in store for us. At the very least, artist Ryan Stegman is sure to make this book look great, and according to the following preview, it certainly does.

SWAMP THING #16

No Caption Provided

The epic story 'Rotworld' is nearing its end and writer Scott Snyder's latest entry will have Swamp Thing facing off against Rotmonster. Additionally, Swamp Thing will have to make a sacrifice to save the Earth from the rot... but what will it be? Also, discover what secret Bruce Wayne left behind in Gotham! Don't forget, Snyder's last issue will be #18.

Sadly, there's no preview for this one. Instead, here's the review of SWAMP THING #15.

THOR: GOD OF THUNDER #4

No Caption Provided

Writer Jason Aaron is doing a remarkable job with this Marvel NOW! title. The future doesn't look bright for Thor as the God Butcher's army will defeat him, but won't kill him. Instead, he's left to himself, defeated in a now destroyed Asgard. What does the God Butcher have in store for King Thor?
