The First Official Photo of Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man!

Boy, does he look beat-up.

Cheer up, Peter! You're a star!
Cheer up, Peter! You're a star!

Lo and behold... the first official pic of Andrew Garfield as the wall-crawler in the new SPIDER-MAN reboot. Quite honestly,  thinking of all the movies costume publicity stills we’ve seen over the years - - from a mask-less Cap to a muscle-sinewed Green Lantern and even all the way back to first gold-florescent drenched shot of Christian Bale as Batman - - I don’t think I’ve had a more immediate “Yes!” reaction to a costume than this.

I'm digging the meaner material and the slight tweaks like the added loops around the wrists and the lack of the “belt” on the hip. While the previous Spidey outfit was strand-for-strand faithful (aside from the texture,) this actually looks like a hand-me-down a high school kid ganked from a pro wrestling outfit and subsequently put through a wringer no high-powered washing machine nor heavy-duty dryer could help. Maybe more importantly, Garfield might be the first Spidey with a skinnier, almost- gangly physique that Steve Ditko might draw.

I’ll continue to assert that a lot of people are underestimating this reboot and it’s going to take fans by surprise. The fact that, of all the ways to present this outfit, they’ve chosen a discouraged, bloody and dirtied Peter Peter with his head hanging should be a sign that we're in store for something different here; something maybe even closer to comics like UNTOLD TALES OF SPIDER-MAN.

And hey - - click on the pic and look at the hi-res. Are those mechanical web-shooters?!?! Are those claw marks from the Lizard?!?!

Umm... I feel like the red bit goes down to far and becomes too slim at the end.  I dunno, something about this image doesn't scream super hero to me.

Besides the "Reboot" (why so soon?) in the first line, I like this look.

Without the belt, it looks...naughty...I'm afraid to see the mask and boots if this is the costume...

Looks like a very good costume. This reboot is shaping up to be much better than i expected. Although i can't see the mechanical web shooters i can see the claw marks from the Lizard. Nice

Eeeeh, I have mixed feelings.  Aside from the fact that, again, not sure about Garfield in the role, I just am not sure I dig a lot of the changes.  The gloves look great, as does the distressed look of the costume and the scrawled Spidey symbol.
My biggest problem is the lack of the "belt".  It just makes the costume look... strange.  Kinda feminine, actually.  Also, I'm not sure about the material used for the blue sections.  It just looks a bit odd.
Usually I'm not this critical about the adaptations of Hollywood superhero costumes, but I actually feel like Spider-Man's isn't even that hard to nail, so seeing it and having a semi-negative feel towards it is something I felt I had to comment on.

Ugh, I don't know how I feel about this.  When I look at this, I have these same lingering doubts as I did when I first saw Ryan Reynold's Green Lantern costume.  But at least it's not full on CGI.

His body so like Spider Man's. So slim and thin, hey it might work.

i'm not happy about the costume but at least Andrew Garfield is a good actor
Green Skinon Jan. 13, 2011 at 1:05 p.m.
Aside from the red part being too skinny, it looks pretty spot on. I'm just hoping we get a wise crackin Spidey, and not another movie about a sad sack.

I'm diggin' it.

I am a HUGE fan of the initial Bendis and Bagley run on Ultimate Spider-Man, and this has a VERY Ultimate feel to it.

Garfield's lanky physique really adds to the whole "I'm just a high school kid in a costume' feel, and, considering the high school setting of the movie, it fits like a glove.

The grittier feel that I get from this picture really lends itself to how Spider-Man has ALWAYS been about how he deal with his everyday problems just as much as his superhero ones, if not more so.

I just hope this doesn't become all about how emotional and hard life is. The last thing we need is an emo Peter Parker.

Dig Deeper into Spider-Man

Peter Parker was bitten by a radioactive spider as a teenager, granting him spider-like powers. After the death of his Uncle Ben, which he could have prevented, Peter learned that "with great power comes great responsibility". Swearing to always protect the innocent from harm, Peter Parker became the Amazing Spider-Man!
