Tarantino Could Have Done 'Green Lantern'

Possibly in another universe...

Could you see Quentin Tarantino direct ' Green Lantern'? Apparently, Mr. Tarantino couldn't seeing as how he turned down the opportunity when he was offered the rights long before the script for the current film was written, according to an interview he did with MTV.

"I was offered the 'Green Lantern...Not since it's been a script, but just like, 'Hey we own the 'Green Lantern.' Would you like it?'"

Tarantino did talk, however, about how there was a time when in his 20's that all he wanted to see were Superhero films.

if I was in my 20s, this would be the genre I'd want to specialize in," he said. "But they weren't making them then, or at least not the right ones. But there also is an aspect where I've kind of outgrown that a little bit."

While he would not necessarily want to direct a film centered around an already exisiting comic book character, Tarantino stated that superhero films are not completely out of the question...just not adaptations.

It wouldn’t be an existing comic book character. I’m a writer. I’d want to use my imagination and not have to fight with geeks’ memories of how this character should be and, ‘Oh, I cast an actor as opposed to a bodybuilder’ or it’s not as good as the way [DC Comics artist] Neal Adams drew him.’ If I were to do something like that, I would want the fun of coming up with the superhero myself.

Thinking this over, I do not know if I could even see Tarantino behind a Green Lantern film. However, if DC ever wanted to do a Batgirl film revolving around Cassandra Cain and Lady Shiva; that is something I could definitely wrap my head around. Just look at how awesome Kill Bill is? What do you guys think?

I'm inclined to agree with his own assessment. Let him create something new - it might give us a solid R-rated superhero flick, which Watchmen failed to do.

I know Tarantino for taking normal, modern concepts and making them bad-ass, I can't see his skills having a positive effect on something that's set in stone like a DC character's story. Like he says, he needs to get his hands into something during the creation process/creating it himself.

Would I like to see him create his own comic universe and then make adaptations out of them? Absolutely.

I'm a major Tarantino fan, but I'm not sure if I could picture him doing a superhero film! Although, he has surprised me before.

I think people tend to generalize what Tarantino is capable of.

Green Lantern is not nearly as violent as, for example, Kill Bill. I mean, Quentin Tarantino would basically turn Hal Jordan into a homicidal manic (Hal Jordan, welcome to Arkham Asylum), along with an ''R-rating.'' Many younger people are fans of Green Lantern, so a massive loss of money right there, and Hal Jordan (not to mention the other characters) would just not be the same. Tarantino is prone to direct excessively violent movies, so hiring him would basically be signing a contract to lose a massive franchise.

I could see him directing 100 Bullets more than anything. That's more up his alley.

I've never seen Pulp Fiction so I don't see anything special about him.

@burr787: If you had said you haven't seen any of his films, not just Pulp Fiction, I would've said fair enough. If you had said I've seen Kill Bill, Kill Bill Volume 2, Sin City, Reservoir Dogs and Inglorious Basterds, didn't like them and hadn't seen Pulp Fiction I would've said fair enough. But to give an opinion on him and his whole career because you haven't seen one of them is crazy.

I wouldn't want to see Tarantino do a comic movie unless it was more of street character.  Punisher, Daredevil, maybe even Wolverine, but I couldn't see him doing something like Superman or GL.
MysterioMaximuson Dec. 3, 2009 at 4:04 p.m.

I think he's a good director, but I think he's very...well...overvalued. Most of what he does it just a blatant tribute or even satire of past masters instead of anything inherently original. It became cool for college kids to like Tarantino, but I don’t think most people understand that he’s really filling shoes more than making his own tracks.

That would be badass, provided they let him do his thing. If you think about it (and stretch it a bit), Kill Bill 1&2 could have very easily been a Lady Shiva story. Change Bill to David Cain, the Deadly Viper squad to the League of Assassins, Hattori Hanzo to Richard Dragon, and Phoebe to Cassandra Cain and your half way there.

So if he did direct the Green Lantern movie, would we have characters babbling on and on in meaningless, slick dialogue that never goes anywhere? And ridicullous melodrama to hide the fact that the story offered is poorly conceived? Oh yeah, and with loads and and loads of brutal, pointless violence simply thrown in for shock value?
There we go that sums up every Tarantino movie ever made. Gee, sounds like a winner to me! (sarcasm is hard over the internet).
