This is getting a little crazy.  Marvel has announced that Amazing Spider-Man #583 is getting a FIFTH printing on February 18.  This seems to be getting out of hand.  It makes you wonder if there are people that are simply trying to buy multiple copies of all the printings or is there just a ton of different people that are trying to get a copy of this issue?  In terms of investment, this just means there are more of this issue floating around.  The key question would be how many of each printing are in existence.  It's possible the third could be more rare than the first.  There's also the original John Romita cover (without Obama) that could be more valuable.

It'll be interesting to see if this gets a sixth printing.  I'm starting to feel bad for Spider-Man.  He's gotten considerably smaller on the cover here.
BECAUSE YOU DEMANDED IT! To meet the continuing, unprecedented demand, Marvel is going back to press with Amazing Spider-Man #583 Fifth Printing Variant. After numerous sold out printings, Marvel is going back to press with a record fifth printing arriving in stores February 18th. Now’s your chance to experience the story uniting Barack Obama with the character that, in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, he named his favorite super hero!

Marvel urges retailers to place their orders by THURSDAY, FEBURARY 5th using Diamond Code DEC088074. Continuing the tradition of the previous printings, this cover will feature a new background along with the same iconic images of Spider-Man and new United States President Barack Obama.

I hope Obama goes on Tv soon and just says, "Stop it. I'm the president, not a damned celebrity. I would also NEVER give Spider-Man the rock (fist bump, respect knuckles, etc)."

I never bought a copy and still don't intend to. It's just getting out of hand at this point.

However, if it brings more people to comic shops and gets them interested in comics, I'm all for it.

That's the thing, people are buying it.  You can't fault Marvel for continuing the prints if comic shops are still selling out of them.  It's simply about supply and demand.  If this fifth printing doesn't sell out, there won't be a sixth.  I do hope that if there is a large number of non-comic readers buying this each time a new printing comes out, they're also picking up other stuff.  If it does help to hook more people into reading comics, all the better.  The market can use all the help it can get.  Bottom line, if people don't buy comics, more titles will get canceled.

I don't blame Marvel at all, I blame the media for whoring him. Marvel just sees a cash cow and jumps on it.

yeah, sad thing is, no one knows who savage dragon is. (Obviously, I'm talking about the public, not the people on here)

There's also the fact that Obama actually said he liked Spider-Man.  I do wonder if he's seen a Savage Dragon comic before.  I used to really enjoy it but have only picked it up on occassion lately.

I haven't read it in over a decade

I did pick up issue #137 (which had the Obama variant) but only because the regular cover had Madman.  The few issues I've picked up have been slightly confusing.  Maybe I've just been out of it too long.  It's too bad it's not more reader friendly to new readers.

From Image.com:
Savage Dragon #137
Savage Dragon #137
"Despite three sold out printings, recent renewed demand for SAVAGE DRAGON's nomination of President Barack Obama has resulted in a fourth and final commemorative edition!

"While we sold out some time ago, we've been receiving an awful lot of letters from fans and retailers alike demanding another printing," Erik Larsen said. "This fourth - and definitely final, I might add - printing commemorates the very first time a superhero has openly nominated a real-life candidate for Presidential office. It's been flattering to receive such attention and I hope everyone who's bought a copy sticks around for the rest of the series, especially #145's relaunch!"

When originally announced, SAVAGE DRAGON's nomination took the press by storm, being the first comic to be featured so highly for its Barack Obama appearance, with stories ranging from The New York Times, The Huffington Post, Yahoo!, Radar Magazine and comic mainstays like Comic Book Resources, Newsarama and iFanboy. The issue featured both a cover and interior endorsement of the then Democratic candidate and is followed up by February's SAVAGE DRAGON #145, the new beginning for the series in which Dragon returns to the Chicago police force and Chicago's other favorite adopted son, President Barack Obama, is there to greet him!

SAVAGE DRAGON #137 FOURTH PRINTING, a 32-page full color comic book for $3.50, will be in stores to coincide with SAVAGE DRAGON #145 (Obama Cover: DEC082233 & Regular Cover: DEC082232 ) on February, 25th, 2009."
