Amazing Spider-Man #583 (Variant)
Amazing Spider-Man #583 (Variant)
Here it is.  We finally get a look at the President Obama Amazing Spider-Man variant cover.  Is this going to be huge?  Most likely.  People will want this issue.  I'd guarantee you'll even get non-comic readers scrambling to get this issue.  It's a variant cover.  We haven't heard what the ratio will be to the regular cover so that could make it even harder to find.  Is this a gimmick?  Kind of.  It does show support of our new President and it's only a five page story so that's okay.  It's a part of history.
To celebrate the upcoming inauguration of Barack Obama, Marvel is proud to present an all-new story teaming up one of the world’s most recognizable political figures with the world’s greatest super-hero as President-Elect Obama joins Spider-Man in Spidey Meets the President!

This all new story written by Zeb Wells and art by Todd Nauck and Frank D’Armata takes place in Washington, D.C. on Inauguration Day and finds one of Spider-Man’s oldest foes attempting to thwart the swearing in ceremony of the 44th President of the United States.  The story will be featured as a bonus story in Marvel Comic’s Amazing Spider-Man #583, available in comic book shops nation-wide on January 14th, 2009.  A special variant cover by artist Phil Jimenez featuring the President-Elect and Spider-Man will be available for this issue.

“When we heard that President-Elect Obama is a collector of Spider-Man comics, we knew that these two historic figures had to meet in our comics’ Marvel Universe,” says Marvel’s Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada.  “Historic moments such as this one can be reflected in our comics because the Marvel Universe is set in the real world.  A Spider-Man fan moving into the Oval Office is an event that must be commemorated in the pages of Amazing Spider-Man.”

For fans of Spider-Man and those wanting to own a part of this historic moment in American history, visit your local comic book retailer on January 14, 2009 to purchase the issue.  To find a comic book retailer near you, visit http://www.comicshoplocator.com/ or call 888-COMICBOOK.  . I wonder if all the Obama collector's item merch out there is going to be as worthless in a decade as all the #1 issues I have from the 90s. Tempting though, that Savage Dragon issue sold like cakes that are hot.

Barack Obama's a Spider-Man fan?! That's too cool.

Anyway, aren't all the villains that try to stop Barack Obama's inauguration going to seem like crazy rednecks?! lol

I tried giving my daughter something a couple weeks ago and had my hand closed.  She thought I was looking for a fist jab, rolled her eyes and did it.  Didja see the Spirit and Ebony did it too?

Hey, G-Man!

There was no ratio involved. Retailers could order as many copies of the variant as they wanted...provided they exceeded their initial orders for the Amazing Spider-man issue that came out in July (before retailers started cutting way back on their orders because of the weakening economy) on the regular cover. So if a store ordered 150 copies of the Spidey that came out in July, and now only order 50, because that's how far the sales have dropped, it had to go back to ordering 151 of the #583 regular cover...in order to qualify for getting any of the variants. Consequently, many retailers passed on the Obama cover altogether.
