Babs Reviews Power Girl #4

Power Girl #4
Written by: Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti
Art by: Amanda Conner

Where to begin? I feel as though I have been giving characters I would not normally give a chance, a chance. Dare I admit I almost like Power Girl? Alright I will admit, she is an okay character. I can recall a time when I felt that Power Girl was the last comic book character I would ever be caught reading. I think most of us can agree that PG is most well known for her cup size; that isn't why I have been disinclined to read her comics, however, (let me be clear, I don't discriminate against cup size). I simply assumed that she was an oversexed character that catered to the male readership. I completely underestimated good writing, and now I can eat my words. Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti write her really well, proving that Power Girl is more than just a busty blond, but a character with a lot of depth who is a blast to read! The fourth installment in the series proves that comics can be fun again! I cannot fail to mention the fact that Amanda Conner's art work brings a wholesomeness to the character that most artistic interpretations fail to do.

One thing I absolutely adored about this issue was the fact that I did not need to read the previous three in order to grasp what was happening in the story. From what I can tell, each issue is structured as a self contained story making the books in this series relatively easy to pick up if you are new to the character and the series. I can not stress how much I love that! If I can read a comic book, be entertained, and not have to research the plot and subject material in order to understand what is happening, it makes reading the book all that much better.

Lol, the guy hitting on PeeGee is Wolowitz and the crew from  "Big Bang Theory" it is so like his character on the show.

I thought that was a great cameo.  Can't wait for the show to start back up.

@Babs
Great review. I liked that word "wholesome". I'm not a holy roller stuck on family values but I really believe that the "darkity-dark mcblack cool to be bad" characters have taken over comics in the last 10 - 15 years. It's refreshing to see a wholesome character (no matter what cup size she is).
Thanks for offering something reminiscent of that silver age morality with light-hearted tones.

Hey Babs just thought of something.

Maybe Jimmy had Terra take off her pants to give us a literal (yet humorous) portrayal of the concept of super heroes "running around in their underwear". Most female Super Heroes do anyway, if not it's skin tight.

that totally slipped past my mind when she did that. i just thought of Starfire and her lack of caring if she's clothed or not.

I think you probably have it right. It also speaks to Terra as a character. If you read the mini-series the same creative team did with her you learn she is from below the Earth's crust and really has no idea about how humans operate. So she probably saw PG stripping down and assumed that's what she was supposed to do in that situation, whether she had a costume on underneath or not. I'm really happy with the interaction the two had this issue. It's cool that PG has a friend and Terra will be able to learn a lot from her.

@Babs: I highly suggest picking up issues 1-3 as well. There's lots of great character moments in there as well. Not to mention some really cute art. So you never really liked PG huh? Is it because people over-sexualize her at times or something else? Did you get to read the interview I did with Amanda? She talks a lot about how she's been presented in the past and how they plan on using her in the ongoing.

@JillPantozzi: Yup! I've read interpretations of her character in the past that did play on her as an oversexed character which is why I've been disinclined to pick up her titles. You can't imagine how pleased I was to be proved wrong! This book, at least for me, is a perfect example of what fantastic writing can do for a character and I felt that reading Gray and Palmiotti's interpretation of PG reintroduced me to her and gave me a better look at who she is, past her buxom exterior ;) . They play her up to be this tough, no nonsense chick; and I don't think there is enough of that in comics. I'll be the first to admit I judged based on her cover, and found there is so much more to PG than the obvious.

I actually loved your interview with Amanda! I thought it was really fantastic! (I thought I told you) :) I think I saw it when you posted it last week (at least that's when I read it). :)

wow, I just read that bit with the wearing a costume, and the line about trolls and ogres and I'm thinking maybe he should stick to inking.

I like the irony they have in taking a character who has a very 'lustful' body, but write her in a more wholesome manner. Just because she's a girl with a stacked body doesn't mean she's automatically predisposed to lots of sex and it seems like a simple out for a writer to depict her as such. I think characters with a twist are more interesting to read.

I never really liked the idea of having super heroes running around in such skin tight outfits. Normally, when you are being active you select something that has ease of movement.
The cute banter reminds me a lot of the kind of talk yo can get from my favorite comic writer, Fred Perry.

The sound is low again girl.  I could hear it, but it wasn't easy.  You need one of the mics that you can put on your shirt like the news anchors.
