The successful LOST producer will not be adapting the Stephen King novel afterall

With the news that Marvel and Stephen King would be releasing a new Dark Tower series in 2010, it would have been neat to see the film adaptation of the novel be worked on at around the same time. It would have been even cooler if J.J. Abrams (LOST) got behind the project to produce it, which up until today, had been the rumor. In a recent interview with MTV, Abrams squashed the rumor that he Stephen King's 'Dark Tower' adaptation was a project he would be working on.

"It's such an important piece of writing. The truth is that Damon and I are not looking at that right now."

The fact that Abrams has no interest in the project is not new news, either. In an October interview with the USAToday, Abrams cited that one reason why he would not dream of adapting 'Dark Tower' is because he is such a massive fan of the novel, he is afraid he would not do the book justice.

"You'll be hard-pressed to find a huger fan of 'The Dark Tower' than me, but that's probably the reason that I shouldn't be the one to adapt it," he revealed. "After working six years on 'Lost,' the last thing I want to do is spend the next seven years adapting one of my favorite books of all time. I'm such a massive Stephen King fan that I'm terrified of screwing it up. I'd do anything to see those movies written by someone else. My guess is they will get made because they're so incredible. But not by me."

There it is, from the mouth of the man himself. It seems that there is no 'Dark Tower' in Abrams' foreseeable future. Would you like to have seen Abrams turn this into a film? Is there anyone else you think could do the book justice, or do you feel that the novel should be left as is?

Oh well. Hopefully someone else will take his place.
Chris Nolan would be good, look how good he did with the Dark Knight and Batman Begins.

Damn. If anyone could have done it justice, I think it would have been Abrams.

Thanks for posting this, Babs.
The Dark Tower series really ruined me for books. It was just too good...
Maybe this is for the best... It will be more fun arguing over the best casting for a Dark Tower movie than actually seeing it I suppose... I'm bummed.
Eddie Dean should be played by Edward Norton.

I wonder way with all the crap on TV that no one takes a book like this and makes a series out of it. With 24 or so episodes a season one couls tell the whole story.

GOOD! ha ha sorry, nothing against Dark Tower, its sweet, but I really hope that JJ abrams get the reigns of AVENGERS! So any news of him doing something else always has me scarred that him and Avengers wont happen. I'm sure it wont, but a guy can dream no? ha ha

Wait, so Abrams went out and bought the movie rights...just so he could sit on them and NOT make the movies?

What a bastard!!!

Luckily for me, I hate J.J. Abrams anyways and can now hope for the Dark Tower movie adaptation(s) to be placed into more worthy hands.  Ridley Scott...I'm looking at you, buddy (as soon as you finish making Blood Meridian, for crying out loud!!!).

this is just a case of a hero rejecting his mission.  his acceptance of this journey will come in time.

If you've read the actual prose books, than yes.  Completely awesome writing and artwork.  If you haven't, than do yourself a favor and read them first.  Time consuming?  Yes.  Worth it?  Most definitely.

I think it would be too difficult a task to actually make a quality movie adaptation of The Dark Tower series.  There is no way anyone would think of making 7 total movies to match the number of books in the series.  Realistically, if a movie does come out for The Dark Tower, it would most likely end up as trilogy which would mean a lot of content being removed from the original storyline.  Not to mention all the probable changes that would be made to make it easier and more marketable for the casual movie goer.  I can't really name any other books that I enjoy more than The Dark Tower series so even though I would love to see a visual version of the story, I doubt it would meet mine, or most other fans', expectations.  However, if a movie is made, Clint Eastwood needs to be Roland!  I know he's getting up there in years, but Hollywood has computers that can make anyone look twenty years younger on film these days!
