No Bondage Dorothy In The "Twisted" Oz Movie

The project's screenwriter wishes to clear some things up.

Last week we heard from Todd McFarlane about the upcoming Oz movie and whether or not it'd remain 'inspired' by his recent Twisted Land Of Oz action figure line.  Josh Olson is the screenwriter for the project and wanted to clear some things up.  Talking to AICN, he mentioned that when he wrote the script, it was in no way influenced by McFarlane's toy line.  He said the pitch he gave Warner Bros. was "a story of my own creation" and because Todd McFarlane was brought in as a producer is what led to the confusion of the movie being related to his toy line.  Olson's aim was to give the movie a Harry Potter-type tone.  The last he heard was they were looking for writers to make the movie "funnier."

But for the record, the project we sold Warners on was in no way based on the Twisted Land of Oz figures. There was no bondage Dorothy, and no gigantic Toto monster. I've never met Todd, never heard his take, and we had one brief telephone conversation after I sold the pitch in which no details of the project were discussed. To be honest, I don't even know if he's read my script.

I do have to say that is a bit of relief.  While I an intrigued by the idea of a dark and "twisted" version of the land of Oz, I can't say the idea of a "bondage" Dorothy made sense.  And Toto as a huge monster?  It will be interesting to keep an eye on this to see how things progress.

What type of "Oz" movie would you want?  Would you want a wholesome version that is similar to the original movie, something really really dark and "twisted" or perhaps something in between?

Oh, my Dorothy Gale bondage fantasies on film crushed before they even began. Oh well, Rule 34 and all. lol

It's an obvious mistake to make when you hear McFarlane is a producer and he had the toy line. I'm not so sure I'd be thrilled by a Harry Potter-esque version of OZ. SciFi (or Syfy) already re-imagined the whole Land of OZ. I liked the idea of a dark and gritty world.

It'll probably gain a larger audience if it isn't the 'Bondage' Dorothy.  Still, there's only one Oz for me, right now :)

Rule 34?

True, I'd forgotten about 'Oz'.  That was okay, but grew boring fast.  So it makes me wonder why try it again?  Or maybe they'd also forgotten about it.

I just don't get this whole toy line. Todd always felt like a mid 90s fad to me, and people would eventually get over his whole "its like Spiderman but TOTALLY RAW" type sh**, which this basically is. It just seems lazy to retell a story everyone already knows but with a motif everyone is already familiar with. I mean, where are the surprises? Whup, turns out D-dawg and gang are the real villains, tweest.

Great so in the next few years we'll have at least Oz films coming out.

I'd like a darker version. But no "bondage Dorothy"...I like the monster take on some of the other characters though.

It's a crude internet term. "Rule 34" basically means "If it exists, there is porn of it". I was making a facetious comment using the term.

I thought in the OZ on SciFi was rather cool. I liked the touch at the end when you discover they are blood related to the original Dorothy.

@FoxxFireArt: Ah, I didn't know that... and in a way, it's true! ;)

A dark and gritty version would be sweet but for the film to have that sense of everlasting curiosity and joy.  Simply add bright sequences where one can tell, that's Dorothy instead of reimagining the entire concept of the Wonder Wizard of Oz.  In my opinion, keeping the movie balanced would be terrific.

Ha ha, so you're saying the only way it'd be good is if Dorothy's in bondage?
Emperor Gonzo Noiron Sept. 7, 2009 at 10:37 a.m.
So they demonify the wholesome creatures of Oz but no bondage for Dorothy? this some bs
Moomin123on Sept. 7, 2009 at 10:45 a.m.

I don't get this. Is this evil versions of Dorothy, Scarecrow, Tin-Man and the Cowardly Lion? Or just a wierd version of the original novel. Here's some good ideas for evil Wizard of Oz duplicates.

   Dorothy Gale-Elle Bishop

  Scarecrow-Scarecrow (Jonathan Crane)

  Tin-Man-Cyberman (Doctor Who)

   Cowardly Lion-Sabretooth

To be honest guys, who would win? Cool dangerous villains...or stupid children's heroes?
Kid_Zombieon Sept. 7, 2009 at 10:46 a.m.
I personally wish it was based off the original book series and not some dark take on the whole thing. but i always did say I wish they gave tim Burton Wizard of Oz to play with instead of his Alice in wonderland. A gothic alice is so done and boring now. Anyways back on topic, read G-mans review of the new wizard of Oz graphic novel, i would be excited if the movie was based off the original stories like this graphic novel.

great Review of the graphic Novel and some Great comments about the original series is here:

loved those figures. not as much as Movie Maniacs.
i have no problem with a twisted Oz.
ever seen Return To Oz? that was a pretty screwed film.
would actually like a fourth movie though in continuation
rather than a remake of the first but thats just me.

The fact that WB wants to make a darker take on Oz "funnier" makes me a sad panda
