Michael Fassbender to Play Magneto

Can he fill Sir Ian McKellen's shoes?

Lots of X-Men: First Class news is flying around the web recently, and most of it is casting news, and according to Showbiz411, Michael Fassbender will be playing Magneto in the upcoming film. Fassbender has appeared in the recently released Jonah Hex, Inglorious Basterds, and 300. The last time Magneto was portrayed on the big screen was back in 2006 by Sir Ian McKellen.

Showbiz411 also reported that Fassbender had to choose between roles in X-Men: First Class and the upcoming Spider-Man reboot. He'll be joining James McAvoy who will be playing his rival Professor Charles Xavier.

There's still a lot of casting rumors flying around, when it comes to this film, and while we can't say this is 100% accurate, it seems more substantial than many of the rumors, like Benjamin Walker as Beast, Rosamund Pike as Emma Frost or Moira MacTaggert, or Amber Heard as Mystique.

I've never really noticed this guy before,  but I've seen a ton of stuff he's been in. At this point, though, I really don't care who they cast, just as long as the actor isn't a "big name" just so they can bring in more people. With a film like this, I'd rather see no name actors step into the role rather than have someone like Brad Pitt play Cyclops to make sure more women watch the film, and that's why I'm a little happy to hear that Michael Fassbender was cast. All I want is a good X-Men film that isn't over-saturated with non-essential characters, which is what ruined Wolverine: Origins. Just give the fans and the mass audiences a simple story with the five original X-Men and no surprises. Adding in extra characters mucks everything up.
