Now you can read Spider-Man AND text your Mom...

It is inevitable that comics will eventually go digital, and many already have. While there is a wide range of independent comic books that have been released through many different venues (iPhone, Amazon Kindle,) Marvel had yet to jump on board making comic books accessible digitally on anywhere other than their own website via subscription. This morning Marvel announced that they would be providing their comics for sale through four applications; ComiXology, iVerse, ScrollMotion and Panelfly. You can download any one of these applications on either your iPhone or your iTouch to access a rather vast collection of Marvel comics; none however are current issues. Bleeding Cool summed up what you get from each application and compared prices per comic book below.

ComiXology
(71 issues, $1.99 each)

  • Age of Apocalypse #1–6

  • Astonishing X-Men #1–24 (Full Whedon Cassaday run)
  •
Captain America #1–30 (Brubaker, Epting)
  •
Marvel Zombies #1–5
X-23 #1–6

Panelfly
(84 issues, $0.99 each)

  • Amazing Spider-Man (1963) #1-25 (Lee, Ditko)
  •
Amazing Spider-Man #519-524

  • Astonishing X-Men #1-24
  •
Invincible Iron Man #1-16
X-23 #1-6
  •
Age Of Apocalypse #1-6

iVerse
 (37 issues, $1.99 each)

  • Age of Apocalypse #1–6

  • Amazing Spider-Man #519–524

  • Astonishing X-Men #1–12

  • Captain America #1–6 (Brubaker, Epting)
  •
Invincible Iron Man #1–6
X-23 #1–6
Will you be downloading the comics onto your iPhone or iTouch? Do you think that this format will change the way we read comic books indefinitely?

They should give you the app and the comics in one lump sum. I'd much rather pay $9.99 and get a few hundred digital comics included with the app, then pay for more from there.

Wouldn't people be able to steal more comics if they went completly digital?

I'd do this... if I had an iPhone.  Guess I'll have to settle for taking photographs & setting that as the wallpaper instead :p

Don't people still steal music online who's to say that won't be the case for comics?

I don't know that is it inevitable that all comics are going digital. If they do I will no longer be a fan. It's just as simple as me liking to actually flip through a book.

Okay let me interject for a second if i may. I have an iphone and trying to look at comics on it is a huge pain in the ass cause comics DO NOT WORK on such a small device plain and simple. Even with the ability to zoom and scroll it just ruins the comics cause so much gets lost cause of the size. All the delicate details are basically gone, splash pages are a nightmare to decipher and it just isnt a good media tool for looking at and reading comics. This is just not good, but maybe when the fabled mac tablet gets released this will be viable but til then dont waste your money.

@Babs:
she wouldn't do that. . . . 1) I'm not sure she even knows what a cell phone is, let alone texting and 2) I think she's lactose intollerant

@rpaolasso:

I can safely say that  I won't ever be buying a digital comic. I like to have the actual physical comic when I read it. It's not the same on a screen. Plus, there's no joy in collecting them digitally.  And I like my trips to the comic store.
